Some (not all) crimes are reactions when people can’t control their feelings:You can’t control your anger, so you kill somebodyYou can’t control your greed, so you rob somebody at gunpointYou can’t control your lust, so you rapeObviously, the fact that you can’t control your feelings (unless there’s an underlying mental condition) wouldn’t be an acceptable excuse for any reasonable person, right?Let’s dial down the reactions:You can’t control your anger, so you punch somebody in the faceYou can’t control your greed, so you steal billions from a sovereign wealth fundYou can’t control your lust, so you fondle people on the subwayIf you were the victim here, would you be so forgiving? Probably not (unless you’re some sort of invincible, rich-beyond-measure, secretly-like-being-fondled saint).Let’s put the reactions on mute:You can’t control your anger, so you scream at the walls in the privacy of your homeYou can’t control your greed, so you start making larger and larger bets in the casinoYou can’t control your lust, so you relieve yourself in your own bathroomNow, nobody gets hurt (except for those super-religious types that are “concerned” at how long you’re spending in the bathroom), and no reasonable person would consider any of these things wrong.Let’s try this now:You can’t control your disgust at transgender people, so you assault and kill themYou can’t control your disgust at transgender people, so you publicly humiliate and discriminate against themYou can’t control your disgust at transgender people, so you gossip about us behind our backs, make a face every time you meet “one of us” but at least, treat us like how you would treat any other human beingI’m quite liberal - so I personally think it’s OK if you feel disgusted by transgender people. (I can’t control who I am, and you can’t control your disgust when you see me.)The important thing is your ability to control your reactions - failing which, the next thing transgender people need are laws that protect us from people who can’t control their reactions.
