An entire course of a semester can be, and is, devoted to it.I assume that you are familiar with fundamental types of reasoning: induction and deduction, and one of the major methods of the latter, syllogisms. (More about signalling this to readers below) One of the fundamental relationships in argumentation is cause and effect. (If you are not familiar with circular reasoning, which is one of the most common fallacies in analyzing cause and effect, I suggest that you look it up.) Cause and effect can become complex. You can have A causing B and then B reinforcing A. If this continues, you speak of a vicious circle, or a continuing cycle, if it is positive or neutral. Other relationships are similarity and contrast. Here, too, you have complex relationships, phenomena which are in some ways similar and in other ways, highly contrasted. Causes themselves can be similar and contrasted. In other words, there can be a various sets of these relationships.It is wise to lay out these basic relationships in your points early on, unless you are very good at thinking in your head. You could use an outline or series of lists to do this. All units in writing or speaking (sentence, paragraph, section, essay as a whole) have a beginning, middle and end. Usually it is wise to treat simpler arguments first and get them out of the way.So the second step is to order your points so as to treat each one individually and the ensemble most effectively. This can even have a dramatic effect in certain cases, leading up to a climactic and very powerful point. Considering the positions of relative importance I have just outlined may require re-arranging some elements in your initial outline or lists.The structural third step occurs as you write, and that is to make the relationships you have defined clear to your reader(s). This you do by means of transitions. The “transition words” listed under number 3 at the bottom of the site that I have referred you to are a partial list of words that show contrast or opposition. Words and phrases that show similarity are, of course, “similar,” “like,” “at the same time” and “comparable.” Some that show cause are “cause,” “origin,” “source;” some that show effect are: “lead to,” “consequently” and “as a result.” You will find many synonyms for these transitions in a good thesaurus. Helpful transitions that show sequence are: “first, second,” etc. “beginning with,” “next,” “in addition to,” “finally.” (I used the first set with the series of 3 steps in structuring; notice how I expressed them.) Some sequential transitions emphasize what they introduce: “furthermore,” “moreover.” These examples should give you the idea. Maybe you can see that here is a varied set of tools at your disposal, and that they are quite powerful ones if you use them well.If you have a long, complex set of arguments, you may even have sentences or entire paragraphs that function as transitions. (My 5th paragraph above is a transitional sentence. It gives a definition (not all transitions have to do this) and connects your question with how I am going to approach it.
