PDF Editor FAQ

What was the saddest thing a teacher has said?

“I made a mistake. I’m going to have to go back to school for something else, but I can’t afford to. But I’m not cut out for this.”I’ve had dozens of my coworkers over the years tell me that they were leaving the profession. Some were retiring and the announcement wasn’t a shock. Some were retiring early, so the announcement was a little shocking, but not much. Some were younger, but also visibly pregnant, so again… not really shocking that they were going to step away from teaching, at least for a while. But it’s the young teachers who worked so hard to become teachers, only to be met with the realities of teaching and realize that it’s not for them. But, inevitably, they went into debt to become a teacher, so they’re in a bad financial position with few options. The problem is that many young teachers were good students from good school districts full of respectful students. They may have heard of how disrespectful some students can be, but they didn’t witness it firsthand as a student. Their first encounter with it is on the receiving end, as a teacher, and it knocks them off of their game and, if bad enough or done frequently enough, out of the profession altogether. The young woman who told me the quote above was one of my coworkers about eight years ago. She was about 24 years old and had been raised in a wealthy suburb with very nice schools. Either she never had classmates with behavior disorders, or she didn’t remember them. Either way, when forced to teach students with absolutely no impulse control, no filter, and too much exposure to the darker sides of the internet, she couldn’t handle it.She was so happy and eager to teach when I met her that summer before the students arrived for the year. By Thanksgiving, her demeanor changed completely. She never smiled anymore. Never seemed happy. And, by March, when our principal gave us our “intent to return” letters for the next year, she’d made up her mind. She wasn’t cut out to be a teacher. At least not in a school with students with behavior disorders, which is pretty much any school nowadays. It’s a shame, because she was a good teacher too. She really knew her stuff and could explain it well, but only to students who were willing to listen.

How do I get US clinical experience as an IMG?

This question has been asked previously. This is one of my previous answers. There are two types of US clinical experience. Students can enroll in elective clinical rotations (also called clerkships, externships, sub-internships, etc.). If you are a graduate, you will need to find observership opportunities.Medical school students can enroll in elective clinical rotations at US medical schools during their final year of med school. If your school has affiliations or collaborative agreements with US medical schools this can be a relatively uncomplicated process. Check with the head of your school. If your school does not have direct connections with a US medical school, this is a much more complicated and competitive process. It is important to begin planning two to three years in advance.Student elective clinical rotations are usually about four weeks, then you move on to another elective course. Visiting student "away" electives are managed by the US medical school you will be visiting. There are pre-requirements including insurance coverage, immunizations, English proficiency exams, USMLE results and others. Some schools charge fees for the course, some do not. But there may be an application fee. Ask about accommodations. Most US medical schools allow their students to make their own housing/ accommodations choices. Google, "international medical student electives in the US" to find a variety of options.Medical student clinical electives are hands-on clinical experiences in the last year of medical school. In the US, medical students learn by doing. The traditional approach is sometimes described as "see one, do one, teach one." In your first experience with a technique or procedure, you will observe. The second time you experience the same procedure you will do the task under the careful guidance of your faculty instructor. As soon as you are in residency, you may be teaching someone else to do the procedure. As a student in an internal medicine rotation you may learn (for example) to place a chest tube; in a surgical rotation you may scrub in and assist on minor procedures and of course, suturing, so much suturing; in a radiology rotation you may have the ultrasound transducer in your hand to visualize a deep vein thrombosis; many medical students deliver at least one baby during their OB rotation. A faculty instructor is always with you.One of the great benefits of student electives is that you get to "audition" in one or more departments or programs at which you would like to match for a residency. If you do well as a student, you can greatly increase your chance of matching at a program where you are already known. Your faculty instructors for your elective will usually be very willing to write good letters of reference (LOR) for your residency application file. Visiting student electives can greatly simplify and streamline your residency application process. Taking two or three visiting student clinical electives in the US is also great preparation for USMLE Step 2(CS.)If you are already a medical school graduate. Most of your USCE opportunities will be “observerships.” However, another Quoran recently found a Hospital in Florida that offers hands-on clinical experience for IMGs.Post-MBBS observerships are generally *not* hands-on in clinical areas because of various complicated insurance/legal issues. After graduation you will spend 3 months to 3 years working on abstracts and publications for your CV while you observe in clinic, during some procedures and in the hospital while you "shadow" your mentor. A good post-MBBS observership is a true mentorship with a faculty member who guides you through the residency application process, coaches you on developing your personal statement, and helps you connect with other medical faculty who will also write strong and influential letters of reference for your application file. Observerships are intended to help IMGs transition into US medical practice.I retired from a medium-size University department with nearly 100 clinical faculty. A few of the faculty had been IMG residency applicants at one point in their own lives. Some of them had well-organized networks with their former medical schools to host one of the top students each year with the intent to network the student/observer into a suitable US residency program.Observers are not paid, and they need the financial support of their families until they start a residency program. Observership positions are specifically for the observers' benefit. These are not *jobs.*The University charges the mentor (or their academic expense account) about $2,000 USD per year to provide each "observer" with valid identification, email and internet accounts, a listing in the University directory, library access, research and laboratory safety training courses, and a few other institutional benefits. That is why these are hard to find.Because observerships are for a longer time period than student electives, it gives the observer/applicant a greater opportunity to demonstrate academic skills, growth and productivity over a period of time. The IMG observers with whom I was acquainted always matched into residencies. I watched this process for more than twenty years. Some international observers matched after one year of observership, and some matched after the second year, but 100% of the IMG observers in our department matched into one of their top two preferred specialty fields within two match application cycles. Many stayed in the US after residency, and took jobs in "under-served" areas of the US to transition from a US training visa to an immigrant visa. These observerships were never *advertised.* You will not find them listed on the internet. These are truly found through investigation and networking. (Sorry, I will not be posting anyone's contact information on Quora.)Find all of the people who graduated from your school and went to the US for residency. Contact every one of the them and ask for contact info for other MBBS graduates who may be able to help you find an observership. There is a second type of observership that is coordinated either directly by a hospital, or indirectly by a coordinating agency. This is a link to the American Medical Association (.org) listing Observership Programs for International Medical Graduates. To find agencies that help IMGs find observerships is to Google, "observerships for international medical graduates." These are businesses that charge fees to provide a service. There are many thousands of IMGs looking for observerships. This is not easy.

Why didn't Dumbledore appoint Snape to the Defense Against the Dark Arts job before Harry's 6th year? And why not let Snape teach both classes, Defense Against the Dark Arts and Potions?

If Snape had taught DADA any time before the 1996/97 academical year he would have had to leave Hogwarts at the end of the year, since the position was jinxed. Dumbledore could not afford to lose the person who is his most important spy, guards and protects (albeit bullies) Harry Potter and has very good motives to do so - secret motives, which makes him unsuspicious. In 1996 Dumbledore's limited life expectancy due to the Gaunt shack incident as well as Voldemort's intention to have Dumbledore murdered, and Snape's Unbreakable Vow, made it clear that Snape would have to openly turn against Dumbledore at the end of the year and that he would not be teaching any longer anyway. Only then could he finally teach DADA.In 1996 Snape could maybe have taught both DADA and potions. However Dumbledore needed an excuse to bring Slughorn back from his retirement to Hogwarts to get the memory. For this purpose he needed more contact to Slughorn than some occasional letters, and he also wanted Slughorn to get to know Harry, since he figured Harry would be able to help. Also he probably wanted to make sure the school is in good hands after his death. If the school had lost both its DADA teacher and its potions teacher in 1997, they would have had to hire not only one but two new teachers. Dumbledore couldn't be sure who would be in charge of the school at this point. It wasn't long after his death that Voldemort took over the ministry, and therefore it was a reasonable guess the new staff members would be Death Eaters. In the end they did hire two Death Eaters to teach at Hogwarts, but only because they had murdered Charity Burbage previously. Without Slughorn it would have been three Death Eaters. Slughorn turns out to be a very loyal, competent ally during the Battle of Hogwarts and Dumbledore probably knew him well enough to be sure he could count on him.
