Not exactly a bribe, but something illegal. I was a certified nurse midwife in the US Air Force stationed at Nellis AFB (1997–2002). I saw a young airman for a routine OB visit. At the end of the visit, she said, “I need you to change my due date.” It’s not unusual for a pregnant woman to not have confidence in her due date for various reasons. There can also be ulterior motives for a patient to want a different due date. For example, I have had patients ask me to change their due date when there was more then one candidate for the paternity of the baby; and, due to timing of intercourse, they want the due date changed to strengthen the case that a particular candidate was the father.I looked through her chart and verified that she had a reliable menstrual history; a first-trimester dating ultrasound and 20-week anatomical survey ultrasound both confirmed her due date; and, her uterine measurements through a series of prenatal visits were all consistent with this due date. I walked her through this, said that her due date was correct, and there was no medical justification to change it. She said, “But, I just need you to change my due date on paper.”I told her, “That doesn’t make sense. You’ll have to explain this to me.” She batted her eyelashes at me and told me that she wanted to use her pregnancy to get out of the Air Force, but that she had missed the deadline to submit the pregnancy discharge paperwork. She pleaded, “If you change my due date to a later date, then I can still file the pregnancy discharge paperwork.”I looked at her and said, “Let me see if I understand this. You want me to knowingly falsify an official record for the purpose of committing fraud against the United States Government.” She paused, her eyes became dewy, and she said, “Does this mean that you won’t do it.” I told her, “Since I have no intention of spending my retirement years living at Leavenworth Federal Penitentiary, no, I’m not going to do it.”

I presume you mean menstrual period.If you want to make an app that keeps track of cycle length and estimates ovulation, I’d say forget it. There are lots of them out there, and they might be better than nothing for trying to get pregnant, maybe easier than using a paper chart, maybe not. But none of them are of any use for postponing pregnancy or finding the fertile time. They are Calendar Rhythm, which has an unacceptable effectiveness. Georgetown University has a modified Rhythm rule which is somewhat better.There are some online charting tools that have enough data entry that they can be used to manually apply NFP rules. Fertility Friend is one that we see occasionally.There are a few apps which actually track fertility symptoms and determine fertile and infertile times based on rules which have been tested and refined over many years and have effectiveness of 98–99.6% (Pearl rates of 0.4 to 2 per 100 woman-years). Have a look at CyclePro by the Couple to Couple League, which does the Sympto-Thermal Method. It takes several symptoms and applies several rules to find both the start and end of the fertile time. It is conservative and gives a strict interpretation of the rules based on the data given. Online Fertility Charting HelpThere are a couple other true NFP apps that interpret the rules; Billings has an Ovulation Method app for instance, and there’s some in Europe.Any app that doesn’t use observable fertility signs is of minimal use. If you write one and tout it as effective, you will soon have the government knocking at your door.So, find a method you want your app to use, and study the rules and apply them. It’s not complicated, but a lot of grunt work to make the app work. Actually, I did a term paper on that for a management class years ago (I got an A). I only did the system engineering part, not writing the app.
