Yes, several times.None of these events were linked in any way apart from the fact that they occurred during my life.Back in college in Birmingham, several of my friends and I found a woman lying on the ground, drunk, almost naked, and bleeding. We called the police, and also suggested that they bring an ambulance. They arrived after 20–30 minutes, and the ambulance as well. None of us knew anything other than that we had tried to give this apparently drunk woman some first aid, so that was the whole event as far as we were concerned. The police took our names, our statements, and our contact information. Never heard anything more about it.About 30 years later, my youngest adult son and I drove into a parking garage at the local mall. There was a large Black guy beating the holy crap out of a small Black woman. We pulled up and jumped out of the car — “Hey, stop that!” He cursed us, and started running away. We saw about the injured woman, who then cursed us as well. “White Devils!” And as we were calling the police, she ran away.A Black lady officer arrived about 10 minutes later (the police have a substation in one of our malls here in Savannah), and we told her what happened, as well as giving her a description of both the man and the woman. The lady officer radioed the information in, and the police mounted a search of the mall [no luck]. As we were getting ready to leave 30 minutes or so later, the lady officer commented that this was par for the course. The “victims” never speak up, and so the police can’t do much to help them — happens all the time.A year or so after that, we had an incident at our house. We are trapped in the house; there’s no place to run because there’s 5 of them out there; we are about to be attacked by 5 adults, and at least some of them have guns (we had seen a couple of pistols, under shirts, etc.) and we have shotguns. So start rolling some ambulances and send SWAT! Remember, the good guys are the ones defending the house!Somehow, that message got through and two squad cars (total of 3 officers) showed up within 5 minutes. They busted Johnny and all his pals, because all of them had outstanding warrants on other charges and were due to be arrested anyway. Best of all, our family was never hurt and no one had to shoot any of these low lives.
