In the extreme, there are people who are too scared to leave their home. To live your life well, you need to put things into proper perspective. Some people get run over by buses, slip and fall, and even may get hit by meteorites falling from outer space. In my humble opinion, it’s best to focus on the positive side of what you wish to accomplish. Then assess the risk. My favorite acceptable risk standard is whether I can sleep well after a decision, without significant worry or remorse. As an upstanding young person in the States, your opportunities are virtually limitless. If you prefer a highly disciplined, regimented and structured environment, where you will be in the best physical condition of your life, then by all means, contact recruiters for the military. If you have some strong skills that can benefit a developing country, perhaps consider the Peace Corps. Not everyone knows that Peace Corps participants receive the same consideration as military vets when it comes to preferential hiring for government jobs. Americorps, VISTA, has programs that help at risk kids in major US cities. At the other extreme, there’s always the French Foreign Legion. If your criminal background is too sketchy for our domestic service organizations, the FFL is open to ALL people who meet basic requirements. They offer a five year stint with traditional anonymity along with an opportunity to adopt an assumed name. i don’t know why this is tagged with tatoo and haircuts, but as someone who spent a lifetime volunteering, and running organizations (and disorganizations) and community building projects that required volunteers, it all depends on what exactly your trying to accomplishexamples;1 i had run a project with no organization at all that cleaned up a crack hood, turning it into the only open community garden, and a safe zone.. our volunteers, some were just freinds from the neighborhood (not the crack hood a neighboring area that was more university students, although the volunteers were not students themselves) but way more then that the voluneers came from the hood itself, at 1st, the children who had suffered from living there, then both the crack dealers and addicts (they voluntarily moved all drug activities several blocks aware, declaring the area a safe zone a ‘hands off” area where the criminals themselves declared it a crime free zone) then came the police lieutenant and a few other officers, and random people like cab and truck drivers etc.. we didn’t need to ever seek volunteers, at 1st it was 2 or 3 people picking up trash and planting seeds, the hood was suspicious but asked what we were up to, and decided to lend a hand2 i had worked in a non profit website hosting company, managing 200+ volunteer web designers. this was as a americorps vista volunteer. these are compensated volunteers who earn a stipend, about equal to a social security check, not much but enough to cover basic living expenses if you live cheap. vista volunteers can be requested by any non profit organization thats been in existence over 3 years3 a freind had volunteered to assist with preparations for a group called phily youth at risk, a group that takes at risk rival gang members and forces them to work together and overcome their differences in an intense 10 day transformative program, i was asked to help and we were just going to help prepare the kids for the trip (mostly searching bags for weapons and contraband) but then was asked to join for the 10 day program. the volunteers included a famous tracker, the b team of the ringling bros circus, trained councelors and intervention specialists. this program had alot more financial backing and had established volunterer agreements with groups like the circus, but also relied on simply asking people at the last minute just before boarding the bus.4 this is a great examplewhen there is a great need there will always be many with a passion to fill that need, ofcourse it helps to have an already established network of people who volunteering and selfless service is their chosen lifestylewith a couple calls dozens of people mobalized, then with a facebook post it became hundreds, and out of nothing but the need for it a disaster relief network wass formed that now has projects in haiti, nepal, and 5 or 6 ongoing ones around the united states (we also have over 100 kitchens traveling the country serving 3 meals a day to 1500–3000 people each kitchen) so, groups that are already very much volunteer based may be an invaluable resource for volunteers for other projects5 i flew gliders with Soaring for People with Disabilities after becoming disabled, the volunteers came from 2 places, 1 people interested in the sport of soaring, pilots, instructors etc from a small local airport, and people touched by disabilities, someones brother might be injured, they bring them to the airport for a flight to inspire them and get inspired themselves to help out.there are also many websites dedicated to matching volunteers to projects, but some are fee based.. i would actually love to create 1 thats more open to any projects without requiring official 501c3 status or incorporation.there are also facebook grooups for volunteering, as well as groups for every possible subject (example your project involves green construction, theres thousands of groups for self sustainable living, off the grid living, promoting solar and wind etc posting a project in groups like that often gets tons of volunteers (last year we had a couple dozen volunteers to build earthships for impoverished lakota grandmothers on the reservation)the videos i posted above run entirely on a volunteer basis, with nobody in charge and no organization, they work by simply asking “we need this done, who wants to do it” 4 out of every 6 will already be burned out and exhausted from saying yes the last 5 times that question was asked, but the other 2 will get up and get to workso that right there is the absolute best answer to the question.. just ask as many people as you can, in any way you can ‘we need people to do this, who wants to help”ofcourse there are volunteer opportunities that require skills like doctors across borders .. in this case posting a request for volunteers on a construction site won’t help you get qualified doctors, so you will have to actively recruit, from medical students and doctors.. or any organizations that have the required skill setsleave me a comment with more details on what you want volunteers for and i will have more ideasfyiyou it dependsmost volunteer opportunities have no restrictions but stuff like americorps and the vista program are compensated volunteering programs that do not alow you to work other jobs or other volunteering opportunities.the job can’t prevent you from volunteering, but the volunteering can stop you from working, if its through a subsidized program like those listed
