PDF Editor FAQ

Are Cub Cadets good mowers?

When I was a kid 45 years ago, Cub Cadet was a great mower. With that memory, I bought one about 5 years ago. As soon as it was out of warranty it started having issues. I decided it was fouling in the carburetor and went to the local lawnmower shop to buy a rebuild kit.“No can do” replied the repair shop owner. “Cub Cadet has changed to an MDH engine. They don’t sell rebuild kits. You have to replace the whole carburetor.”I sold the mower at a garage sale and replaced it with a Husquevarna. No regrets.

How long should a Cub Cadet mower last?

My 2010 vintage Cub Cadet is a pretty little thing. I bought it after favorable experience with a 1990 Craftsman mower with a Kohler engine. I began hating it with a passion within a few weeks. It is a glaring example of the same faults that devastated the U.S. vehicle business starting in the 70’s and 80’s. Too many MBA’s and lawyers, and too few engineers.MTD juggles boxes of disparate parts to create a product with little regard of how they might function together (or not)! My first issues were with the cutter deck. There were interferences by vertical and horizontal adjustment parts that disallowed required adjustment. Then removing and installing the cutter deck with its drive belt. Instructions offered two methods. Neither worked.Funny sound one day just mowing. Chattering and grinding. Examined engine. An engine bolt somewhere in there started unscrewing itself into the flywheel teeth used for starter engagement. Fortunately the flywheel teeth were harder than the offending bolt.Repeated electrical failures, but I forget details (human body protection to allow sleep). The muffler had repeated gasket failures, and finally snapped off completely. I bought a new muffler and installed it today. I discovered that there was no far-end suspension bracket on the original muffler. The engine, however had an attachment hole for the bracket welded onto the new muffler. I visualize the production line “we are out of the modified correct mufflers, but we still have these bins of old ones. Bolt ’em on. The dumb customers won’t find out about the defect until the warranty expires. “I already have the monetary compensation from the class action lawsuit where the adveritized claimed horsepower was much higher than Kohler achieved.By the way, my 1990 Kohler/Craftsman still runs faithfully as a yard trailer tow vehicle, and I love my current Husqvarna riding mower. The Cub Cadet hopefully makes it for a few more weeks before it sees the metal scrap yard.
