Why don't homeless veterans just re-enlist instead of living on the street?

Are you ready to hear some harsh stuff? This is by no means a blanket statement, but it probably applies to 75% of them. They sucked. There's a 90% probability that they got booted early. If not, they were probably mediocre service members on their very best day. Marginal performers or worse every other day. They're currently homeless for a reason, and it isn't because “the man is keeping them down.”That other 25% have behavioral health issues or drug addiction. Take away those things, and they'd probably be successful in any field.Keep this in mind as well. There is a very high likelihood that the person you see holding the “Vet- need help" sign, isn't a Veteran. I went out with a VFW group several years ago in Colorado Springs to seek out homeless Veterans and help them find shelter, or at least make sure they're getting everything they're entitled to. I think we logged 150 encounters, and 15 of them were actually Veterans; 20 if you count the guys who never made it out of basic training (they're not technically Veterans). The guys we found, we got them an ID card, applied for a DD214 (which was being sent to the VFW for safe keeping) and got them maxed on benefits. None of them took us up on housing. Housing had rules, and they weren't interested in rules. They were fine with the status quo. None of them claimed to be Veterans when they were begging.EDITLet me make this very clear, I am not unsympathetic to these people. Being homeless is not something I wish on anyone of these people. It sucks. I'm an advocate for Housing First initiatives. They work. But it is very hard for a Veteran to become homeless. Google the numbers. There are 18 million Veterans in the United States. About 40,000 of us are homeless. That's in the neighborhood of .2%. About 200,000 service members exit the military every year. About 800 of them have a bad conduct discharge of one form or another. If the .2% holds true, that means 400 of those recently departed service members are at risk of being on the streets. Now, considering that most service members are stacked with training in a skill or trade, have roughly four years of experience in said skill, have formal leadership training and probably a bit of formal educations (possibly a full degree of some kind before getting out). Then they go through transition training, have access to job fairs, qualify for hiring preferences and have a little life experience that most people can't hold a candle to. Add to that, they have benefits such as the GI Bill, VA home loan program, Small Business Loan programs, VA sponsored Vocational Rehab, possible health care coverage that ranges from only covering service related issues to full coverage health care. Now, add on organizations such as the VFW, American Legion and WWP among others, as well as the organic network that simply being a member of the Veterans Club gives you (tend to give each other the benefit of the doubt.)With all of those advantages, how does a Veteran become homeless. The unfortunate reality is, many of them set themselves up for failure. Not all. But the bulk come from that 800 people a year that couldn't cut it in the military.Again, it isn't 100%. Some guys fall through the cracks. Others didn't fall apart until later in life. But they tend to be a minority of a minority. Those guys tend to fall into the “can and will be helped” group, or the “thank you, but no thank you” group. I don't know if you can really count the latter as homeless. Does it count if accept it? But the rest, there's just not much you can do for them.

Is UAN mandatory for PF withdrawal process of employer before UAN scheme started?

Hi,As per the latest norms by the EPFO, quoting UAN number is mandatory to withdraw EPF balance, whether it is through online or offline mode. There is only one relaxation to this ; Claim forms may be accepted without UAN if the date of leaving/exit of the member is before January 1, 2014. Besides, in exceptional cases, the officer in-charge may at his discretion based on the merit allow acceptance of claim forms without UAN.If you have Aadhaar, you can generate UAN by yourself and can quote this on your PF claim form.Related Articles :UAN : Register, Generate & Activate EPF UAN online | Direct UAN allotment on the basis of AadhaarOnline EPF Claim submission : Process Flow & Eligibility ConditionsNew EPF Composite Claim Form | Single Page Form for different types of PF Withdrawals (Full / Partial)

How can I withdraw my EPF money without UAN?

Hi,I believe that quoting UAN is mandatory for EPF withdrawals through online or offline modes. But, I do remember vaguely that sometime back EPFO had issued a notification that Claim forms may be accepted without UAN if the date of leaving/exit of the member is before 01.01.2014.With effect from January 1, 2016, the EPFO had made it mandatory for all members to furnish the Universal Account Number (UAN) for settlement of claims.
