How did Dave Consiglio like Habib Fanny as a student?

I'm so excited to tell this story!Habib Fanny passed through my doors twice. It was around October 2001 when the teacher next door and good friend came into my room and asked me for a favor. I said, “Sure, what do you need?”“Do you have any room in your physics class?”“No,” I said, “it’s full. Why?”“You need to take one more kid.”I was intrigued. This was a very unusual request, one that would require some strings to be pulled. She proceeded to tell me about a student who had been placed in her physical science course, the most remedial science course in the building. He was “from Africa” and was so bored he had taken to grading her papers.I thought it over and said, “Sure. If he's that good, I'll take him as an independent study student.” We went to see the counselor, and the following Monday, Habib Fanny walked through my door. There are some first impressions you never forget. At the age of 15 (I think - correct me on this if I'm wrong Habib) he spoke with an eloquence I had never before heard. I never have since. I'm not ashamed to say that there were a few occasions when he would say something and I smiled and then, when he left, I had to look up a word!Habib was bored to tears in my physics course, and so just weeks later, I pulled the same set of strings to get him transferred to AP Physics. I was reluctant to let him go, but grading my physics papers was not an appropriate use of his time.Habib passed the AP Physics test. You can imagine my elation when Habib signed up for my AP Chemistry course the following year. I got to really see this young man in the fullness of his capabilities.Polymath? Polyglot? Polypoly. Yes to all. Fluent in multiple languages, possessed of an intuitive mind that grasped mathematics and abstract chemical concepts instantly. And a work ethic second to none. Habib was as proficient in AP English as he was in AP Chem. We had deep, interesting conversations on a nearly daily basis. He spoke about US history in ways many of our teachers would have struggled to do. Politics, art, biology - this kid could do it all.He graduated at 16, chock full of AP credits (including English and chemistry) and already well beyond high school. In the subsequent years, I've watched him complete nursing school and medical school, all the while growing ever more amazing. He's 30 now and I'm 39. I am truly baffled at the idea that I'm just 9 years his senior. It makes me feel delinquent in my studies!I can't wait to see where he goes and what he does. It's been one of the highlights of my career to know that I've had some tiny influence on this amazing person. He's a US citizen now, a doctor at the medical school of my alma mater, and a good friend. He has informed my opinion on numerous topics, particularly political ones. His unique perspective on the American experience has opened my eyes to worlds unseen to my white male suburban experience.I could gush for pages and pages, but just follow his feed and read his answers. You'll see what I mean.

Are IITs and IIMs better than foreign universities? Why?

I only talk of IIT and not IIM because i dont know much about IIMHowever i can say quite categorically that IITs are not better or even as good as Foreign Universities in say USA or China or Japan or Singapore.I am basing this on three factors:-(a) Standard or Quality of Professors and Teaching(b) Overall Campus and Facilities(c) Focus on Learning compared to Focus on Finding a JobI am basing all this on IIT upto 2010. Unless IITs have changed drastically from 2010 - 2020 - I believe my answer would be appropriate.Standard or Quality of TeachingMy Son studied in IIT Chennai. His Professors were ADEQUATE. They taught well but they did not encourage post lecture visits nor did they answer lateral questions about the subject or topic. They never stopped to examine the fundamentals - just told students to assume certain things and go on. Not one student knew - WHY THESE ASSUMPTIONS HAD TO BE MADE.He then studied in Texas A&MHis Professors were GOOD. They encouraged post lecture visits. They answered Lateral Questions. They taught fundamentals. IN fact they demanded to know if the students understood fundamentals - otherwise they would teach them again.Concepts could be understood far better and clearer. This was the same for Undergrads as well.Campus FacilitiesIIT is simply not even 50% of the Quality of Foreign University Campuses. The Hostel Rooms are fifth rate, The Food was fifth rateForeign University Campuses have Olympic Sized Pools, Sports Complexes, Gymnasiums etc. This is a University in Singapore. Any Student can swim in this pool. Any Student can live in these Hostels. They have 10 Canteens to eat from - all serving high quality food at subsidized cost. These are the Hostels (Called Halls). This is Typical IIT Fare. Food which once had a mouse served with it. In US - even Jail prisoners would get better fare.An Ordinary College has a Meal Plan that would be better than some Corporates in India.Vegetables, Salads, Pasta, Meat - all included in the Meal Plan. If you are Non Vegetarian you can put on 10 Pounds. In IITs you would lose 10 pounds minimum.Focus on Learning rather than Focus on JobsWant to make a Project in IIT that is different?3 Idiots was absolutely right. Most Students who want to work on a different project will not be entertained much.Procuring the items is impossible, Releasing Funds from IITS is tougher than getting money from Nirav Modi. Requesting for a Foreign Component from Germany - Requires to be put up all the way to the top and may take a long long time. This is unless a Corporate agrees to assist the project which happens to about 10% of the projects.Professors will allott random projects done by previous year students to most of the students except to a select handful. Anyone of these students - say they want a more interesting project - the Professors usually rant “Focus on your GPA and Placement!!!”In Foreign Universities- Such Sanctions are far easier as most Universities have much more money than IIT could have in 50 years. Even ordinary colleges in US.You could get components for a project in a few weeks as mostly you will order it yourself (The University pays you to order it yourself).Anyone can do any project. Completely Independent. No Last year project to copy off and get bare minimum marks. The Student actually learns…..So IITs are NO WAY BETTER than Foreign Universities in Any way - except for Indians it is closer to home. The Teaching, the Environment and the Facilities are all much much worse than even 2nd Tier Colleges in USA or 1st Tier Colleges in Singapore or China.

What is one thing that you hate about Bihari?

Before you conclude my answer and judge me , I would request for your 2 mins to read my journey.I am 27 , girl from a village in Bihar. I did my schooling in Patna and Varanasi , staying at some relatives house to complete my 12th because my parents were not able to move to city just to educate me.(My father is farmer, moving out was out of imagination even). So I started giving tutions in 9th and that was my pocket money. I used to earn 100rs per student. So, roughly INR 300–400 in a month. Then cleared my AIEEE and got enrolled in engineering college in Bhopal. I wanted to get in college asap so that can live my own life.Being consistent topper in college , I started hoping of Good company placement for myself but unfortunately due to loan issue my father started facing issues in sending money to me although he never ever told me but I sensed and in that circumstances I choose to job in 7th sem only with salary of 15k and moved to Ahmedabad with permission of my college dean. In day time I used to work and at night I did completed my study for 7&8 sem. Life was good for me as I was independent .Then moved to Delhi ,worked in night shift for 2 years and paid all the debts (night shift pays pretty good than day). I completed my masters with my own savings.Left that Job and moved to New company pretty big brand in India , working now as Assistant Manager and I like it.Now people are talking about my marriage and the dowry amount varies from 24 lakhs to 35lakhs. Yes that's is the cost of my study, struggle, education and determination.I don't hate this but I feel disgusted about this!Nobody gives a shit about girl being ambitious and independent what all matter is the Dowry amount, my salary, my savings,my looks ,my cooking skills.Thankyou if you read this 🙏 , bahut bahut Shukriya 🙏*NO Offense at all** not everyone is same but my answer is about Mass.P.S. I am proud of my parents, the place I born, I loved my struggle,I am grateful for everything (Good and bad) and I am not for SALE!
