Let me illustrate this with an analogy.Case-A) If you are planning to buy a scooter, which brand do you prefer? Honda or Suzuki?Case-B) If you are upgrading to a Car, which brand do you prefer? Maruti Suzuki or Honda?In case-A, 55%(scooters) of the customers buy Honda brand whereas only 9%(scooters) and 3.2%(overall 2W) buy Suzuki as can be seen from their Market share charts for FY18-19In case-B, despite Honda’s absolute leadership in scooters, 51% of the population buy Suzuki whereas only 5.2% buy Honda when it comes to Car.In marketing terminology, Brand perception and product positioning play a pivotal role in succeeding in the long term. Maruti has been long perceived to be a successful car OEM and has been positioned to be a gateway to customers upgrading from 2 wheelers whereas Honda is perceived to be a synonym for scooters. Thus the customers are aware of the utility, perceived-value and limitations of both the brands.You could have already connected the underlying dots; the above brands have closer resemblance to TRS and BJP parties. To draw parallels, BJP is the Maruti of cars (MP) with 50+ MS and TRS the Honda of scooters (MLA). Thus voters know the utility, perceived-benefit and limitations of TRS party when it comes to national level elections.Adding to this, the other significant factors that weighed against TRS.1) Telangana voters have matured enough to differentiate State Assembly and lok sabha elections viz-a-viz political parties. Gone are the days when a lay man gets overwhelmed by MLA elections and ignores to vote in lok sabha elections.2) Also the strategy of 4 months gap between state and National elections has had its toll on TRS. As can be seen in AP with MLA and MP candidates being voted on the same day, the sentiment was unified towards one single party i.e YSRCP won 151/175 MLA and 22/25 MP whereas the phase 2 elections in Telangana had Modi wave in full swing.3) Despite BJP winning only 1 seat out of 119 in Dec’18 state assembly, voters had the clarity that MLA/TRS has their sphere of influence limited to TS whereas MP/BJP has a national level reach.4) Leading up to the election, Nizamabad witnessed hundreds of farmers getting onto the roads and protesting for a correction in minimum support price (MSP) and the setting up of a Turmeric board as promised which eventually didn’t turn into reality.The distressed 179 turmeric and red jowar farmers have contested in the loksabha elections against CM’s daughter, Kalvakuntla Kavitha, who was seeking re-election from Nizamabad constituency. It turns out that the farmers had the last laugh.5) By snubbing Harish Rao who is spearheading gigantic projects such as Kalleshwaram and dethroning him from the ministry of Irrigation, Marketing & Legislative Affairs and captivating them within himself, KCR invited wrath from all quarters significantly from within the party. This gave wide spread speculations of internal rift between KTR (KCR’s Son) and Harish Rao’s supporters. This had its say on Karimnagar and to some extent in other constituencies. .6) KCR’s communal remarks against Hindus, Revanth Reddy’s (INC) survival test and Kishan Reddy’s (BJP-Secunderabad) show of mettle and ministry worthiness also played a part in the drop of TRS vote share from 46.9 in Dec’18 to 41.3% April’197) In constituencies such as Adilabad, other answers cite Hindu-Muslim conflict to be the driving force; however voters aren’t blind to the fact that MLA has higher sphere of influence in local governance than their MP counterpart.
