Despite its remoteness, I found this fertile centre of sculpture so compelling, and the once tense ambiance now so relaxed a new reality. The statue is one of a veritable army of colossuses and totems studding the plateau-like mesetas around San Agustín, a lovely colonial town close to the Ecuadorian border. About one-third are enshrined within Parque Arqueológico de San Agustín, comprising about 50 separate yet more-or-less contiguous ceremonial burial sites centred on the town that lends the entire collection its name. The tombs were looted centuries ago for their gold huacas (revered objects) and precious relics. And many of the original statues were lost or dispersed around the world. In 1899, for example, British anthropologists led by Captain H W Dowding loaded several dozen statues onto a boat bound for England. It promptly sank. Only one effigy was retrieved and transported to London, where it stands in the British Museum. The statues and tombs remained undiscovered until 1757, when Friar Juan de Santa Gertrudis stumbled upon the vast lithic library and called it “the work of the devil” as “The [natives] did not have iron or implements to produce such a thing.”(Credit: Christopher P Baker)The San Agustín Archaeological Park is located in the Colombian Massif of the Colombian southwestern Andes, on terrains of the municipalities of San Agustín and Isnos, in the department of Huila. Three separate properties, totalling 116 ha, comprise the Archaeological Park: San Agustín. San Agustín archaeological zone featuring the largest complex of pre-Columbian megalithic funerary monuments and statuary, burial mounds, terraces, funerary structures, stone statuary and the Fuente de Lavapatas site, a religious monument carved in the stone bed of a stream. The tombs contain an elaborate funerary architecture of stone corridors, columns, sarcophagi and large impressive statues depicting gods or supernatural beings, an expression of the link between deceased ancestors and the supernatural power that marks the institutionalization of power in the region. In the municipality of San Agustin the main archaeological monuments are Las Mesitas, where the ancestors constructed artificial mounds, terraces, funerary structures and stone statuary; the Fuente de Lavapatas, a religious monument carved in the stone bed of a stream; and the Bosque de Las Estatuas, where there are examples of stone statues from the whole region.Vast pre-Columbian hypogea of Tierradentro’s 162 underground tombs carved into solid volcanic bedrock, and the more than 500 monolithic stone statues and tumuli (ancient burial mounds) surrounding the nearby town of San Agustín, sprinkled throughout 2,000 sq km of the serried mountains and highland plateaus of the Upper Magdalena Valley in southern Colombia. The area has been inhabited by the Nasa, an indigenous group who speak páez (a Chibcha language). Yet little is known about the mysterious culture that flourished throughout the first millennium and then disappeared six centuries before the Spanish and the Nasa arrived on the scene.No-one knows the relationship between the carvers of Tierradentro’s complex shaft-and-chamber tombs and, a 180km drive to the south-west, San Agustín’s earthen tumuli (burial mounds) and hulking statues. San Agustín chiefdoms and the outstanding statuary of their tombs represent an exceptional trajectory of political centralization amidst a rugged environment and without the concentration of economic wealth, and as such are of great scientific and aesthetic importance. The San Agustín archaeological sites were abandoned around 1350 AD and rediscovered during the 18th and 19th centuries, which led the looting and disturbance of most of the monumental tombs while looking for grave goods which proved to be very scant. Erosion, earthquakes and human intervention displaced stone slabs and the contents of many tombs, but this did not destroy the original funerary architecture. The main values of the San Agustin monuments, expressed in the megalithic stone elements, funerary layout and stone carvings and painting, have been preserved, as well as the original construction techniques and associated archaeological deposits. Direct intervention is limited to research and conservation. The majority of the statues were found within immense tumuli in which the pre-Columbian people buried their chieftains. They contour the meseta like a basket of eggs. The statues – known locally as chinas – range in size from barely 20cm to 7m. Most were rectangular. Some were oval. A few were as hemispherical as if turned with a lathe. And most were etched with abstract motifs or zoomorphic figures, wrapping two-dimensional designs around three-dimensional objects to walk a path between worlds. Sunlight threw into high relief the exotic designs filled with tense, latent energy. Some resembled snakes, frogs and birds of prey – symbols of creation, wealth and power in pre-Columbian culture. Many were warrior figures with jaguar-type fangs – an allusion to chamánes (shamans), spiritual leaders who were thought capable of absorbing the jaguars’ power.San Augustin Park Huila1-Here's Why Colombia is One of the Most Biodiverse Countries on Earth2-15 Razones por las que NUNCA deberías visitar Colombia3-10 Photos that Show Colombia’s Natural Diversity4-Map of Colombia5-Colombia Map and Satellite Image6-The 5 Best Cities to Visit in Colombia (& Why They're So Awesome)7-The Ultimate 1 Week Colombia Itinerary 20198-Visiting Guatape - A Traveller Guide to Help Plan Your Trip9-https://destinationlesstravel.com/2017/08/13/taganga-colombia/10-https://destinationlesstravel.com/2018/03/18/salento-colombia/11-https://seecolombia.travel/blog/2015/09/10-reasons-why-you-have-to-visit-the-choco/12-https://geology.com/world/colombia-satellite-image.shtml13-Historia - Clínica FOSCAL14-Palomino, la playa perfecta para los amantes de la aventura y la naturaleza15-https://www.luxuryhotelsguides.com/?fullufi=-594206&gclid=CjwKCAjwkenqBRBgEiwA-bZVthQ1mrnIWkGiiciNvu1DZthrxANEdrUDCwRMs99DRPI2FMEqyPD3jhoC6PoQAvD_BwE16-Mompox | ¿Cómo llegar, qué hacer y dónde hospedarte?17-San Agustín Archaeological Park18-South America’s other ‘Easter Island’19-http://blog.redbus.co/naturaleza/parques-naturales-de-colombia-mas-conocidos/
