It's a relief to go to an ordinary college after a self-conscious school.Imagine the alternativecartoon characters who join mainstream political societies in hope of a brilliant careerpeople who like Rag Week or "Ents", or dress-up in tights and make up for the drama society (I saw this walking round Trinity Dublin)people who have no idea what the course is, but are there because of the dreaming spires and mis-judged career advantages.It's very nice to ditch all that as soon as you possibly can, and go to an ordinary college with people who have been lucky enough to go to an ordinary school.UK answer.The Complete University Guide has a few reviews it publishes alongside the worst-scored institutions like London Metropolitan, London College of Fashion, and Kingston. The official website for comparing UK higher education course data seems to give slightly different results.One of the first things I found at my badly-ranked college was a request to go to a lecture by some people from the students union, who asked us, please, not to give a bad review like "Keele is easily confused with a service station on the M6". I don't know why they did that. It's mainly the course that matters, and a fair review of a bad course helps everyone. Reviews of the college itself are a different thing - often a college in a cheap area can be better than a famous one in an expensive area with long commutes and fewer students knowing each other. If students gave fairer and less loyal reviews, these colleges in cheap areas might help more people be happy.The tables of scores tend not to list individual results for courses at the worst-ranking universities which is a pity; you have to pick-up an impression for what people have written about the institution generally. The Metropolitan link above is to a journalist's reminiscences, counting the college admin as the worst part of the course rather than the teachers or students. Reviews note the colleges failure to paint a wall. If you cannot paint a wall, can you pick the right staff and students to study together?Joint-honours courses don't get scored for each half which is a pity. A joint honours couse is an interesting thing to do as a student but gets you the core of two subjects rather than a chance to study more in either. On the other hand, students who do different subjects tend not to get a chance to shine at either. They are one of the categories of student who doesn't go to a famous college, alongside ones who don't come from an academic background but have beaten the system, students who went a bit funny at age 18 and did worse than expected in exams, and students who chose this college because it teaches coal mining and archaeology in a way that no other college in the world does. There is probably a long list of these categories of student.One other general point. Badly-reviewed colleges tend to be run by some bunch of people in jobs who don't know what to do. They tend to know the economics of advertising for a teacher and putting that teacher in a class, but might not know or care about the subtlety of whether a discussion or a lecture suits the subject best, or whether tools are needed. Courses like "shipbuilding studies" (no welding or shipbuilding involved) or "catering studies" (no cooker provided) are common. These might be good courses for someone who can build a ship or cater to the hungry, but terrible for someone who wants to learn the trade. When tools are provided, they're likely to be impossibly expensive and unlike anything a student could ever afford at home, and available only for one short supervised course in year 2 during lessons. Photoshop is the usual example, used instead of Gimp which students can afford because it is free. A good course would teach both.Inter-personal answer students:A run-of-the-mill college can feel good after going to a self-concious school; more freedom just to be yourself. Nobody cares. On the other hand, commuting to the centre of a large town, meeting people different to yourself for a short time and then commuting back again is not something to pay for and probably a reason why SOAS gets bad reviews.George Orwell wrote something in his Passage to India book about discovering on the boat that the people who worked on the ship were "as good a man as me", or some phrase like that. You can see that an Eaton education at the time could set you up for such surprises, just as posh colleges can set you up for surprises about the people who have not been to college -surprises about how clever some of them are and how stupid others are. It's good to mix.There is a much smaller down-side to badly reviewed colleges.Some students seem to be there for a job qualification that gets the best salary, for the least work, at the nearest place, and maybe join a sports club while they study. After leaving college, you realise that they were onto a good idea and wish you had studied something like an apprenticeship or a trade qualification.There's a complication.Badly-reviewed courses exist at well-reviewed universities and vica versa.People seek-out the courses, probably more than the institutions.Tuition reviews:Two-subject courses can be good for random experience, I found, but but not for the technical course I was interested in, which was much what I had already studied at school but worse taught. On the other hand the arts course I did for experience was good.A long commute to an expensive city centre can put people off, because it's impersonal when you get there, see some faces for an hour, and commute back in opposite directions to distant bedsits.A college administration that's unable to paint the walls is also unlikely to be able to retain good staff, solve problems as they arise or respond to feedback about what is a good course or what should just cease. So if you read one cross review, it could reflect on the average day-to-day study as well as the thing that prompted the one bad review.Students with really low expectations give good scores out of politeness and low expectation, so "Politics of Syria" might get worse scores than "hairdressing". Students can be horribly conformist and overly-loyal.Inter-personal answer teachers:My old college looks quite respectable now in the league tables. When I went there, there were two tables for uni and poly, with my college second bottom of one of them. I call it "my college" because they had an implied contract to justify 3 years of students' time and lots of money that was paid more from general taxes in those days. I think for some reason they preferred overseas students who paid hard cash rather than a subsidy cheque.The arts and social science courses I took were good, but I read that Keele's flexability for course choice and requirement to do short courses was what limited its long courses - forcing them to stick to the text book core of the subject. I probably enjoyed courses in unfamiliar subjects and hated those in subjects I was interested in. So I don't know how my answer applies to people's experience now in other colleges.Keele's economics course tested the vague legal definition of teaching so badly that students can sue for a cash refund. They taught in one of the UK's most awful government-influenced recessions and appeared unaware of it, preferring US text books. They avoided statistics as wall as current affairs. They were rude. Their new 1980s desktop computers for statistical research were bolted down and locked into a room so that students could not challenge staff about facts. Staff addressed students by standing at one end of a room and addressing large groups of a dozen or more, to avoid their stupid ideas being challenged.I think that some of the staff were bad people, who deserved a better legal system for me and a legal sysetm for them, because I think they should have given the money back plus something for wasted time. If you are the chancellor of Keele University I hope you read this and answer here.On the other hand there were exceptions (for the record: economic history and economics of industrial innovation) which I still remember as good.Teaching experience at worst (I'm sure it's not all like this):Teachers can have similar experiences to students; if teachers are treated unfairly, there's a fair chance that students will get a bad deal too.Kingston Uni.My partner tried about one or two years' part-time teaching in Kingston Uni music department, alongside a self-employed job.The teaching students showed little interest in the course - they gave the impression of just wanting lesson plans, no more or less.Small things that could have helped staff, like a place to sit down and have a coffee, were not provided.Requests to teach extra hours and courses came as though in emergency, without reference to my partner's self-employed job and whether he wanted extra paid hours. There was no interest shown in whether he happened to have background knowledge, or skills, or had a prepared course ready. Preparation time isn't paid. The final request was to cover for a colleague's sabbatical leave, arriving at 9am. On arrival, my partner discovered from students that it was to teach keyboard harmony. He decided to resign.
