PDF Editor FAQ

What do Czechs think of Ukrainians?

I am Czech and I’ve lived in the Czech Republic for my entire life. There are some 10 million of us so you get 10 million opinions. Generally people usually meet a Ukrainian who is a seasonal manual unskilled worker and an illegal immigrant with a tendency towards a violent behaviour. People of Ukraine who are here legally usually stay out of sight because of this negative perception. Some of them ‘stay out of sight’ by getting a job where they don’t have to meet other people or if they are highly educated or skilled they get a job where their nationality and/or lack of command of Czech language doesn’t matter at all like IT. Ukrainians who decide to stay here learn Czech language and do their best to blend in - you usually can’t recognize a 2nd generation of Ukrainian immigrants (i.e. their children who were born here) from Czechs. The seasonal, unskilled workers tend to make mess or be violent. That’s bad. Although it’s not tied to the nationality, it’s the perception. Areas with a lot of young men without families living in overcrowded dorms tend to have a pretty bad crime record no matter the nationality. On the other hand my personal experience is different - I used to meet couple of Ukrainian illegals in a pub near such dormitory. Half drunk, talkative, friendly, nice guys but quite rough.People holding a university degree having a good job were totally indifferent from Czechs, apart of the language. If I had to choose one emotion which I feel towards Ukrainians, I’d say that I feel sorry for Crimea and I hope Ukraine becomes a part of EU and NATO.

Why were the skies orange in Northern California today? When will this stuff go away?

There are thousands of wildfires blazing out of control all over the west coast of the United States. In the state of Oregon, somewhere around 500,000 people—roughly one tenth of the state’s population—have been forced to evacuate their homes. At least fifteen people have been killed.Meanwhile, the skies are utterly choked with smoke and ash. Consequently, for the past few days, the skies over large parts of the west coast have been bright orange and the sun has hardly been visible. People have described the skies as “apocalyptic,” which frankly sounds like an apt description for this whole year.Wildfires have already ravaged more acres of land along the west coast this year than in any previous year on record. These wildfires are being directly fueled by climate change. Because summers all over the world are rapidly becoming hotter and drier, wildfires are becoming even more devastating. This devastation will, of course, only continue. In future years, wildfires will only grow even more devastating and there is probably nothing we can do about it.This is only the beginning. I don’t think there’s any chance that humans will get climate change under control anytime in the near future because, in order to reduce climate change, we would all have to make drastic changes to our way of life and there’s no chance that that will happen. I suspect that, in less than a hundred years, many areas in the west that are currently inhabited may be rendered completely uninhabitable due to drought.Thankfully, I live in Indiana. Summers are terribly hot here, but they’re generally wet and humid, so we don’t get as many wildfires as, say, California. It was extremely foggy here this morning, but at least the skies weren’t orange. Who knows, though—as a result of climate change, wildfires are probably going to start becoming more common here too.ABOVE: Photograph from this article from The New York Times of firefighters struggling to put out a wildfire in Madera County, CaliforniaABOVE: Photograph from this article of the apocalyptic orange sky over San Francisco from September 9, 2020ABOVE: Photograph from this article of the apocalyptic orange sky over San Francisco

Where is Mexico’s coldest place?

Even if we agree on a definition of "coldest place", be it the one with the record for the lowest temperature, the one with lowest average daily low temperatures or, least likely, the one with the lowest average daily temperature, answering this question is anything but straight forward. While Mexico's meteorological service does make their temperature data available on line, the information is presented in separate files per state and per year without an easy way to compare or cross-reference them. However a cursory google search reveals two competing claims:First, Wikipedia in Spanish states that La Rosilla in Durango is the coldest place in Mexico, with an average low of -7.1° C (19.2° F) for January and an absolute low of -26° C (-14.8° F). A number of articles [1][2][3] make the same claim, however the sources they all cite, the national water commission, which oversees the national meteorological service, indicates that the lowest daily temperature reported was -18.5° C (-1.3° F) on November 23, 1979. The data spans the 1975 to 1983 period and their site shows this weather station (10125) as currently inactive [4]. This is supposed to be a picture of said weather station.Secondly, other articles [5] claim that Ciudad Madera in Chihuahua is the coldest place in Mexico with a average low of -7.5° C (18.5° F) for December and an absolute low of -25° C (-13° F). In this case the SMN data agrees [6], showing a minimum of -25° for December 27 and 28, 1997 and January 21, 1988. Although the article mentions that there is no weather station in Madera, the SMN shows one as active (as of September 2014) with readings dating back all the way to 1927.While Ciudad Madera (Google Maps) has more than 15,000 inhabitants, Rosilla (Google Maps) is barely a settlement with a reported population of less than 300 people. What can be gleaned from the the SMN latest available report, which covers 2014, is that the coldest states during that period, the ones with the lowest monthly-average daily-low temperature where, in order from coldest: Chihuahua, Durango, Tlaxcala, Estado de México and Zacatecas.[1] La Rosilla, el lugar más frío del país[2] La Rosilla, a 26 grados bajo cero en Durango[3] El lugar más frío de México[4] Page on cna.gob.mx[5] Madera, el lugar más frío de México...hasta 27 grados bajo cero[6] Page on cna.gob.mx
