As a current professor teaching at multiple universities, the plight of the job is the inconsistent nature of appointments that are “awarded” on a semester-by-semester basis. Among the considerations for reappointment are previous enrollment numbers (money) and student evaluations (professor and institutional reputation).Make the class as challenging as it should be, grade accordingly, and your enrollment numbers will suffer. This equates to less revenue generated per class - a topic the administration does not accept easily.To enforce higher standards, regardless of the instructor’s engagement: if a class is too time-consuming, and graded as fairly as it should be, the student evaluations will negatively reflect that. Whether students learned what they needed to understand is secondary. The juxtaposition between a learning institution and a purchased learning-investment is hardly measured in learning outcomes, but in degrees, you can hang on the wall and GPAs the student can proudly talk about.Therein lies the catch:For the disposable adjunct instructor, to receive a renewed contract for another semester, revenue (enrollment) and feedback (reviews) matter. The contract to teach is of importance to the professor. The administration who awards such contracts cares about revenue and justification (reviews) to award or rescind contracts.For the student who shoulders an unreasonable amount of debt, the collegiate experience is measured in immediate outcomes. Grading schemes vs. investment. The glitz and glamour of having a Starbucks, dining options, and a well-developed fitness center on campus overshadows the concept that this is a learning institution, originally designed to teach skills that are of functional value in critical thinking, application, with the intent to future-proof the student. Ultimately, the student has an investment-justified expectation to attain a passing grade. IF the grade is not what the student expects, the review will express that, the instructor’s reputation will degrade, and enrollment numbers of future courses will drop - see #1.The outcome is that an instructor has to tread carefully between conveying valuable teaching experiences, a challenging curriculum, adequate and fair grading standards, but also consider the fact that there are hundreds of others just waiting to get the contract that you currently have. As a “commodity”, the teacher is a variable of lesser importance, the student’s money is the object of desire.

The salary of mailmen isn’t as much as you would think. It hasn’t gone up much in 20 years. I used to be a postal clerk 20 years ago and topped out at $18/hr, even at a higher level pay than when I started at level 4. I was a level 6.Mailmen earn around $17-$18/hr to start (information obtained from Job Search | Indeed , a website that lists jobs currently available). See below for a script of that job offer. The person who commented on $32/hr is not accurate. The post office likes to add in benefits, like sick leave, annual leave, health insurance and retirement to the pay/per/hour, making it seems much higher. There is no other company that does this when calculating the pay/per/hour. I think they do this because otherwise they have trouble obtaining employees and retaining them for a variety of reasons (long story). After that. it’s the measly amount that cost of living provides. It is less than the average teacher makes, which is roughly $27/hr. Because mailmen or woman don’t work on Sunday, the also don’t get Sunday premium, and they also don’t get overtime, except maybe at Xmas holidays. There may be times when they work an ‘off day,’ to fill in for an absent carrier, so that would be overtime. But, as a general rule, it is a day job with no overtime and no Sundays, therefore, no Sunday premium. It is rare that the postal office allows overtime for carriers. For clerks and mail handlers overtime is the normal.I wish these postings by the USPS would make their sentences uniform and justified at the margins of left/right. Yes. Not much; perhaps I planted a few seeds. Not as much as I expected. That being said, I was on three boards. One was an association of public school librarians. One was the directors of an inter-library cooperative, and one was the board of directors of the local public library syatem.The association was fun. We got to visit public school libraries all across the two largest counties in California. We traded ideas and fed each other once a month.The second was annoying. Although I was one of the founding members and my signature was on the grant application to create the inter-library cooperative, the college librarians simply ignored any director who wasn't one of them. They tolerated the public library members, but insisted that as academic as opposed to mere school librarians, they were not interested in an input except their own.The public library board was almost worse. They had no interest in any ideas on how to improve the public library experience for school students. They had lots of ideas about how teachers should tailor their assignments so that students did not show up at the public libraries asking for research help, but had no interest in cooperating with teachers in this. So simple a suggestion as receiving a copy of the public school curriculum and research paper due dates was rejected. Not their job, I was told.They also had zero interest in using their authority to increase their own funding. It almost seemed that complaining about underfunding was better than increasing revenue.Not their fault, but when it came reappointment time, I was told that they needed my slot for a Black woman, and my interview was a waste of everyone's time.However, if you have been offered a seat, take it. The experience will be worth your time and you might be able to make a difference.
