Why did 2016 become the year when Apple missed its internal targets for the first time since 2009?

The short and sweet answer is that future demand is difficult to forecast.A tough year.Apple was up against tough, record-breaking numbers in 2016. In 2015, revenue had increased $50.9 billion or 28%, driven primarily by a 52 percent increase in iPhone sales (let that sink in for a moment). Now, if you are a tiny company in their first year or two of business, a 28% increase in overall revenue is not all that impressive or hard to achieve, as your base is small (i.e. sales increased from $100K to $150K). However, when you have a 40 year old company generating nearly one quarter of a trillion dollars in annual revenue, that kind of increase is phenomenal (and almost unheard of).Of course, a year later, everybody has forgotten the 2015 banner year and we simply look only at the current one. Sales are down this year to the tune of 8% or $18.1 billion. Oh no! That’s like the end of the world! So, while one can accurately say there was softening demand for Apple’s products in 2016, in the same breath we must also say this with some context and consider the tough comparison they were up against.A word about targets. Can you say where your life will be a year from now? You could get run over by a car tomorrow, meet the girl/guy of your dreams, discover you have brain cancer, win the lottery or be flat broke. The same goes for companies. Yes, historical data, financial trends, pre-orders, and the like give us clues where companies might be heading in the future, but that is hardly a good substitute for a crystal ball (which we all know does not exist). So companies stick their thumbs up in the air and make the best educated guess they can, based on what they know. Will their guess come true? They hope so, but honestly don’t know for sure. The article you cite talks about ‘targets’ (or financial objectives). Actually Apple, and many other public companies, have three internal targets, which articles like this rarely bother to discuss. Understanding them may change how you think about if Apple missed the boat this year, or not.You might call these three internal targets a low, medium and high plan.In the corporate world, they are called threshold, target and maximum.Threshold is the lowest acceptable (to management) goal. Target is what they aim for. Maximum is what they dream for, but more realistically, don’t have much of a chance of achieving. Here are revenue and operating income levels for the three plans.Revenue: Apple reported $215.6 against a $203.3, $223.6 and $243.3 threshold, target and maximum, respectively. They beat threshold and ‘almost’ achieved target (96.4%). That’s pretty damn close in my book and not the ‘failure’ the article seems to suggest.Operating Income: Apple reported $60.0 against a $50.7, $60.3 and $71.3 threshold, target and maximum, respectively. They beat threshold and ‘almost’ achieved target (99.5%). That’s ultra, pretty damn close in my book and not the ‘failure’ the article seems to suggest. So when you see headlines like “Tim Cook’s compensation not spared as Apple misses performance goals,” while factually correct, I think it is important to put things into perspective. Why did 2016 become the year when Apple missed its internal targets for the first time since 2009?Softening demand, comparative to a record-breaking prior year, combined with management’s inability to predict the future (through no fault of their own).sources:AAPL - Definitive Proxy Statement, 2017AAPL - Definitive Proxy Statement, 2016Annual Incentive BasicAAPL - Form 10-K, 2016

What would it take to convince those who voted “Remain” in the UK’s Brexit referendum to consider becoming “Leavers”?

Fairly simple.Deliver on the prospectus offered when ‘selling’ the benefits of leaving the world’s largest trade bloc. When we consistently have stronger growth than all of the countries in the EU and better trade relationships with both the EU and all of the third countries with whom we currently have relationships via the EU, that’ll be a start. Then I’d like the UK to recover all of the GDP it lost whilst rearranging its relationship with the EU; at the moment, the difference between the pre-referendum forecasts of November 2015 and actual outcomes show that the UK has lost over £31bn. By the end of this year, it will be £72 billion and we haven’t even left yet and, by the end of 2019, it’ll be around £134 billion. So let’s get that back into our economy because we were promised that the economy wouldn’t skip a beat. Just for information, I’m expecting that figure to be nearly £220bn by the end of 2020 so I hope all the Leave voters are prepared to put in a shift because they’re going to be working some 12-hour days, seven days a week for a little while to show us lazy Remainers how to get the country back on track which will be a bit of shock for a lot of them as they’ve long since retired. Then let’s make sure we can carry on flying, having medicines licensed and acquiring isotopes for various forms of nuclear medicine and that trade - particularly goods traffic - can flow unimpeded in both directions between the UK and the EU, particularly with regards to Ireland. I don’t want to see long queues.I’d also be more positive about Brexit if - and this is quite self-interested - I could carry on taking contracts in my chosen field (IT as you ask) in Europe. And when I’m not working in Europe, I’d like it if my food shopping bill didn’t become, let’s say, 10% more expensive simply by virtue of tariffs on the food we import from the EU because nothing get’s my back up more than becoming £500 a year poorer just because some people have an issue with the standards for tap washers being agreed in Brussels (the actual extent of lost sovereignty) or some people coming in from south-eastern Europe to harvest strawberries. I distinctly remember two commitments that we would have cheaper food and it would be just as safe, so I’m expecting those commitments to be upheld.I’m also expecting a portion of cod and chips (well, I’m more a haddock person really) to become cheaper because we have control of all of fishing grounds.I’m also expecting all of the money that the UK paid into the EU to be recovered and used for national priorities such as the NHS, education and transport; I believe the figure quoted was £350m/week or £18.2 bn so I’ll be expecting all of that to be available from the Autumn statement in 2019. If the Leave politicians such as Gove, Johnson et al can make sure that happens, that’ll make me more positive.I’m also not expecting to see employment or wage figures suffering. We were promised that the economy would, at the very least, stay the same so there shouldn’t be any reason for corporate reorganisations or any unemployment. On that basis, I’m also not expecting the national finances to suffer so there won’t be a shock to tax receipts. And - because I’m a nice chap - I’m expecting that (once we’re out) the UK government will take responsibility for all of the shortcomings in UK society as opposed to continuing to blame them on the EU. Rather optimisitically, I’m also not expecting the EU’s place as the preferred national scapegoat for grumpy Anglo-Saxons - especially newspaper editors working just off Kensington High St. - to be taken by Afro-Caribbeans, Asians, women, single mothers, Jews or the disabled. So - on the basis that nothing is agreed until everything is agreed - when Leave delivers all that it said it would under the conditions promised, I’ll agree to support it.Shouldn’t be a problem.–––––––––– EDIT ––––––––––It has been brought to my attention - by a Leave voter - that I’m being unreasonable to expect all of the GDP to be recovered and, on reflection, I agree. So I’ll make a concession: just ensure that the economy between 2016 and 2022 ultimately grows at 90% of the trend defined during the period 1994 to 2015.What that means, according to my trusty digital abacus, is that the economy has to grow at 0.587% (perfectly reasonable) uninterrupted for the next 19 quarters (not so reasonable, but then I didn’t start this). On that basis, GDP in 2022 would be about £2.186 trillion (compared to the £2.220 trillion that was implicit in George Osborne’s last Autumn statement, effectively the loss of one year of GDP growth)My interlocutor - whose bio states that he “dislikes strangers deigning to tell me how I feel from misinterpreting my posts using their biases” - opines (with no hint of irony) that I am “…a greedy economist”.It seemingly doesn’t occur to him that the reason that I might have a desire to see any economic damage mitigated is that GDP generates tax revenue, therefore lost GDP results in less tax revenue. And less tax revenue means smaller budgets for things like the NHS (at the heart of its second f••k-up of the week today with an issue over contracts for junior doctors), social care, education or housing. Or maybe it does occur to him, but it’s easier to sling an ad hominem attack and play the man, rather than the ball.Given that the state takes 35% of GDP in revenue, a cumulative loss of £440 bn of GDP by 2022 means a loss of £154 bn of tax income; that might not mean much to some people who believe that lost GDP is a small price to pay for regaining the nebulous concept of ‘sovereignty’, but - to me, living as I do in the country affected and in the present as opposed to some mythical version of a country living in splendid isolation and at the top of its game - it’s a big deal as I’d like to live in a kinder, fairer country which isn’t on an inexorable decline into socio-economic Darwinism. So 0.587% growth plus resolving…the replacement of 759 EU agreements and treaties worldwidethe issue of the Irish bordernew customs arrangements with the EUthe supply of radioactive materials to diagnose and treat cancer patientsthe resolution of a new ‘Open Skies’ agreementthe establishment of a new medicines agencythe establishment of a new banking agencyand, last but not least, a new “deep and special” relationship with the EU which protects people’s rights, the ability of companies to trade across the EEA (+ Switzerland) and maintains national security against terrorism and organised crimeGenuinely, I don’t see why Leavers are finding it so hard to deliver what they promised.

What is the most interesting fact that you know and I don't, but I should?

There's enough to be learnt here!!What can I learn right now in just 10 minutes that could be useful for the rest of my life?Ex:Answer by Akash Randheer to What can I learn right now in just 10 minutes that could be useful for the rest of my lifeIf you are a motorbike rider in India and a car is running in front of you then never ride in the center-line of the car.If there is any pot-hole (Indian roads are full of those) in front of the car, the car driver naturally try to avoid it by keeping car in the center-line.Once the car crosses the pot-hole, the rider on bike will get very little time to react and save the bike.Instead try to follow the left wheels or just away on a bit left side.Answer by Anjali Maniar to What can I learn right now in just 10 minutes that could be useful for the rest of my lifeTo Stop Hiccups Instantly :Drinking water, from the wrong side of the glass. The side of the glass , that is away from your mouth, is the wrong side. And this happens to be the only way one can drink water from the wrong side. Or which mountain inspired the Paramount logo? Or who was the Columbia Torch Lady? Let's find out:1. DreamWorks SKG: Boy on the MoonIn 1994, director Steven Spielberg, Disney studio chairman Jeffrey Katzenberg, and record producer David Geffen (yes, they make the initial SKG on the bottom of the logo) got together to found a new studio called DreamWorks.Spielberg wanted the logo for DreamWorks to be reminiscent of Hollywood's golden age. The logo was to be a computer generated image of a man on the moon, fishing, but Visual Effects Supervisor Dennis Muren of Industrial Light and Magic, who has worked on many of Spielberg's films, suggested that a hand-painted logo might look better. Muren asked his friend, artist Robert Hunt to paint it.Hunt also sent along an alternative version of the logo, which included a young boy on a crescent moon, fishing. Spielberg liked this version better, and the rest is history. Oh, and that boy? It was Hunt's son, William. The DreamWorks logo that you see in the movies was made at ILM from paintings by Robert Hunt, in collaboration with Kaleidoscope Films (designers of the original storyboards), Dave Carson (director), and Clint Goldman (producer) at ILM.Photo courtesy of Robert Hunt - Thanks for the neat story, Robert!2. Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM): Leo The LionIn 1924, studio publicist Howard Dietz designed the "Leo The Lion" logo for Samuel Goldwyn's Goldwyn Picture Corporation. He based it on the athletic team of his alma mater Columbia University, the Lions. When Goldwyn Pictures merged with Metro Pictures Corporation and Louis B. Mayer Pictures, the newly formed MGM retained the logo.Since then, there have been five lions playing the role of "Leo The Lion". The first was Slats, who graced the openings of MGM's silent films from 1924 to 1928. The next lion, Jackie, was the first MGM lion whose roar was heard by the audience. Though the movies were silent, Jackie's famous growl-roar-growl sequence was played over the phonograph as the logo appeared on screen. He was also the first lion to appear in Technicolor in 1932.The third lion and probably most famous was Tanner (though at the time Jackie was still used concurrently for MGM's black and white films). After a brief use of an unnamed (and very mane-y) fourth lion, MGM settled on Leo, which the studio has used since 1957.The company motto "Ars Gratia Artis" means "Art for Art's Sake."Sources: MGM Media Center | Wikipedia entry on "Leo The Lion"3. 20th Century Fox: The Searchlight LogoIn 1935, Twentieth Century Pictures and Fox Film Company (back then mainly a theater-chain company) merged to create Twentieth Century-Fox Film Corporation (they later dropped the hyphen). The original Twentieth Century Pictures logo was created in 1933 by famed landscape artist Emil Kosa, Jr. After the merger, Kosa simply replaced "Pictures, Inc." with "Fox" to make the current logo. Besides this logo, Kosa was also famous for his matte painting of the Statue of Liberty ruin at the end of the Planet of the Apes (1968) movie, and others.Perhaps just as famous as the logo is the "20th Century Fanfare", composed by Alfred Newman, then musical director for United Artists.4. Paramount: The Majestic MountainParamount Pictures Corporation was founded in 1912 as Famous Players Film Company by Adolph Zukor, and the theater moguls the Frohman brothers, Daniel and Charles. The Paramount "Majestic Mountain" logo was first drawn as a doodle by W.W. Hodkinson during a meeting with Zukor, based on the Ben Lomond Mountain from his childhood in Utah (the live action logo made later is probably Peru's Artesonraju). It is the oldest surviving Hollywood film logo. The original logo has 24 stars, which symbolized Paramount's then 24 contracted movie stars (it's now 22 stars, though no one could tell me why they reduced the number of stars). The original matte painting has also been replaced with a computer generated mountain and stars.Paramount logo history, for more details, see: CLG Wiki5. Warner Bros.: The WB ShieldWarner Bros. (yes, that's legally "Bros." not "Brothers") was founded by four Jewish brothers who emigrated from Poland: Harry, Albert, Sam, and Jack Warner. Actually, those aren't the names that they were born with. Harry was born "Hirsz," Albert was "Aaron," Sam was "Szmul," and Jack was "Itzhak." Their original surname is also unknown - some people said that it is "Wonsal," "Wonskolaser" or even Eichelbaum, before it was changed to "Warner." (Sources: Doug Sinclair | Tody Nudo's Hollywood Legends)In the beginning, Warner Bros. had trouble attracting top talents. In 1925, at the urging of Sam, Warner Bros. made the first feature-length "talking pictures" (When he heard of Sam's idea, Harry famously said "Who the hell wants to hear actors talk?"). That got the ball rolling for the studio and made Warner Bros. famous. The Warner Bros. logo, the WB Shield, has actually gone many revisions. Jason Jones and Matt Williams of CLG Wiki have the details:Warner Bros. Logo History - see the full details at CLG WikiIf you're interested in WB cartoons, you can't go wrong with Dave Mackey's Field guide: Link6. Columbia Pictures: The Torch LadyColumbia Pictures was founded in 1919 by the brothers Harry and Jack Cohn, and Joe Brandt as Cohn-Brandt-Cohn Film Sales. Many of the studio's early productions were low-budget affairs, so it got nicknamed "Corned Beef and Cabbage." In 1924, the brothers Cohn bought out Brandt and renamed their studio Columbia Pictures Corporation in effort to improve its image.Vintage Columbia Pictures Logo (Source: Reel Classics)The studio's logo is Columbia, the female personification of America. It was designed in 1924 and the identity of the "Torch Lady" model was never conclusively determined (though more than a dozen women had claimed to be "it.")In her 1962 autobiography, Bette Davis claimed that Claudia Dell was the model, whereas in 1987 People Magazine named model and Columbia bit-actress Amelia Batchler as the girl. In 2001, the Chicago Sun-Times named a local woman who worked as an extra at Columbia named Jane Bartholomew as the model. Given how the logo has changed over the years, it may just be that all three were right! (Source)The current Torch Lady logo was designed in 1993 by Michael J. Deas, who was commissioned by Sony Pictures Entertainment to return the lady to her "classic" look.Though people thought that actress Annette Bening was the model, it was actually a Louisiana homemaker and muralist named Jenny Joseph that modeled the Torch Lady for Deas. Rather than use her face, however, Deas drew a composite face made from several computer-generated features (Source: Roger Ebert, Photo: Kathy Anderson)Answer by Abhishek K Das to What are the little known things about some famous logos?Golden Mean, Golden Section, Divine Proportion are all common names for what is known as the Golden Ratio which is based off the number phidiscovered by Italian Mathematician Fibonacco. Phi ()is the ratio between the number sequenceetc. where the next number in the sequence is derived by addingnumbers together. So,, and,and so on. When we divide two sequential numbers i.e.andthe ratio between these numbers soon become very close to.Some believe that it is the most efficient outcome, the result of natural forces. Whatever you believe, the pervasive appearance of φ in all we see and experience creates a sense of balance, harmony and beauty in the design of all we find in nature. It should be no surprise then that mankind would use this same proportion found in nature to achieve balance, harmony and beauty in its own creations of art, architecture, colors, design, composition, space and even music. From the partheon to Monalisa , from the Egyptian Pyramids to credit cards, has been there, always. Now the amazing part , famous logos with golden ratios all over the place:1. National Geographic2. Pepsi3. iCloud4. BP5. Toyota6. Grupo BoticarioEdit_1:Traffic lightDo you know why Red is used as the signal to stop, green used as the signal to free to go and yellow used as the signal to be ready to stop?Simple, it is because of 2 reasons1. Rayleigh scattering2. VIBGYOR[1] provides a relation between the scattering range and the wavelength of the radiation. That is, the amount of scattering is inversely proportional to the fourth power of the light's wavelength.[2] provides information on wavelength's on each color of the visible spectrum, that is, Red has the maximum wavelength and Violet has the minimum wavelength. This makes the color red to travel the longest distance through fog, rain, and the alike. As it is more important to know from a distance when to stop a fast moving object, red is used as the stop signal and other colors with opposite purpose in the order of ROYGBIV!So all the following are valid traffic signals:Top being stop signal and bottom being free to go....and there are totally 150 different combinations of the traffic lights which are valid but not practicable!
