There are different types of ‘New Entrant'in a cantonment. There are newly commissioned officers, new Sepoy's who join after recruit training and officers and other ranks who join a new cantonment on posting. Which ‘New Entrants' are you referring to?I assume you are referring to the newly commissioned officers, and answer accordingly.Newly commissioned officers join various units in different cantonment on completion of their training. Almost always they are youngsters between the age of 20–23. Every unit has young officers (Up-to 5 years of service), middle rung officers (5–15 years), senior officers (16 years of service and more).Responsibility to groom the new entrant lies with young officers, his Company Commander and Second in Command of the unit.In many units, particularly in the fighting arms, the young officers play pranks with the new entrant. Usually some of them play roles of orderly, waiter etc to rag the new officer. It is all in fun without causing any harm or humiliation to the new officer. For example when I was young officer and when my immediate junior joined the unit we got his entire luggage stolen at Railway Station. One of the officers acted as orderly and served him tea laced with chilly paste, one of the officers acted as Second in Command and blasted the new officer for loosing his luggage. Later at end of the day we disclosed the truth to him, returned all his stuff and treated him to a lavish dinner.Of course, next day onwards he was put through the grind to make him a good officer and a gentleman.

As a young German I didn’t want to answer this question but some of the comments make it necessary. I think that this is an answer which is best given by those under the age of 35 and not by those above, especially the baby boomers. Why? There are several reasons:German law is family friendly in the sense that the German government benefits families who live together and strongly disadvantages those who live alone or who rent alone. How are you supposed to meet someone without shame when more and more young people live with their parents? It is a first practical issue already and similar to Italy. Even those who do live alone are either under extreme financial stress or they have so many roommates to make up for high rent prices that having children is out of the question.As mentioned by others on here Germany is a country of people who rent. In the comparison with other European countries Germany does very badly because half of the country doesn’t even own property. In a situation like this having children is out of the question for most of those in the younger generation too because there are existential issues which naturally come first.Salaries for young people are horrible. In comparison to the baby boomers millenials are being offered far worse wages (more so if you account for price increases in terms of rent, food costs, transport etc.). Many people pretend that Germany would have a shortage of skilled workers when in fact many young people apply for jobs after their studies and companies stubbornly refuse them out of a “lack of work experience” which is a strange mantra which for some reason is only applied in order to disadvantage Germans but not foreigners. Depending on the case you could even title it German against German racism.The baby boomers are not handling their money well. Many people who have commented here are exactely out of this group and don’t appear to have asked the new generation for their reasons for not having children. I don’t know a single person in my generation who is not aware of how many baby boomers waste their money and lavishly live above their means without even realizing that they aren’t doing much better or okay in terms of property possession and captial in contrast to other European countries. They are only partly to blame too because they are being told by the media how rich they would supposedly be. In their mind they may feel wealthy and are still trying to compare their wealth symbols to those of other baby boomers but in the majority millennials are scared as hell by the behavior of baby boomers as they endanger the entire German society (many baby boomers have bought houses on a credit without those being paid off yet, traveling too much, spending too much on cars etc.)Germany has many old people. Even if the millennials began having children like rabbits it would barely make up for the difference in generation sizes.Illegal immigration. As an educator and someone who has seen the immigration sector inside out I know that there has been more illegal immigration than legal immigration by refugees. It will take many, many years in order to integrate them into society and in many cases it will be impossible as well. Germany has paid a lot of money to other countries, to legal immigrants and to illegal immigrants as well in order to deal with the issue. Some people became very offended by the “government commercial” below to pay the rent of immigrants in the country of their origin for twelve months if they leave. The fact is: This commerical is not directed at refugees. It is solely directed at illegal immigrants who applied for asylum and refused to leave the country after being denied asylum for the obvious reason of not having grounds to get it in the first place. How would other countries handle this? If we were talking about any other country than Germany than no country would be this nice and this generous. Not a single one. But, we are talking about Germany with its image problems from the past so of course this is being done. That alone is insane. While many baby boomers are far left wingers for historical reasons alone most millennials are moderates with some being left wing and some being right wing. As mentioned above, the behavior of the baby boomers is scaring many millennials since they are acting irresponsibly. How are you supposed to have children in a country that can’t even handle the most basic political situations? Which refuses to offer a roof over the head of every German? Which shruggs its shoulders when the numbers of homeless people increase and even shrinks the number of social homes for this case? Some baby boomers obviously came to this plattform in order to discriminate millennials instead of being neutral on the matter. Millennials aren’t hedonistic, nor lazy, nor unwilling to have children. Most of them want to have children. But logically they feel like they can’t because…they can’t. That is well researched and millennials know it.German sexism. There have been plenty of studies which looked at German sexism in contrast to other European countries. If a German woman stays at home she is being looked down upon, if she goes to work she is being looked down upon as well. Germany is doing worse than France in terms of how mothers are being treated and even France isn’t doing best in comparison to other countries. Companies rarely benefit or acknowledge families and women are still often being turned down for jobs once that the boss realizes that she has children. Germany is a society in which a family can prosper best when both parents work but this is very difficult for German women.German men like any western men are being bashed extensively by the media. Even though that does not represent the majority opinion of millennial women it still leads to more sexism because some men feel rightfuly offended by this and think that millennial women would think the way how some extremist left wingers on television. This is not the case since as I mentioned, most millennials are sick of left and right wing games and tend to be moderates. There are plenty of studies on both the withdrawal of millennial men over being presented badly in the media as well as general political opinions of millennials.Lack of schools, kindergardens, kitas. Germany doesn’t invest too much into improving the number of kindergardens which is important because if both parents need to work the child has to be somewhere for at least half of the day. Since the German government pushed many unqualified workers into German kindergardens it would take you more money in order to afford a decent, private kindergarden which is too expensive for millennials.Old politicans, young Future. German is a country with mostly old, senior politicans who are more interested in voting for their own rights than for voting for a future of the following generations. Millennials are well aware that the senior politicans will vote in a way that guarantees them a basic amount of retirement money while leaving more and more baby boomers and certainly millennials with nothing.In connection with this: Taxes. Germany is a country which over-taxes the population heavily which does make sense if there is a return in terms of better public schools, kindergardens, retirement money and investments into infrastructure. None of this is happening in Germany on the scale on which it should and millennials are well aware that they will be overtaxed without any benefits. For this reason alone smart middle and upper class millennials prefer to work outside the country for a couple of years until they have saved up enough to do something meaningful within Germany.Structural changes of society at the same time as social security problems. Millennials know that it is expensive to let many unskilled workers immigrate into the country while not even allowing them to work and paying them at the same time as well as the cost of the social security system breaking down. In Germany the laws in regard to foreign workers are quite strange and many people who immigrated both illegally and legally aren’t even allowed to work while at the same time being paid if they have children, being paid a very high “pocketchange” without having to pay rent because most of them are in government housing and taking care of increases in crime as letting the lower class of any country immigrate brings more extremists and crime with them. At the same time baby boomers and senior make up large parts of society with many seniors voting for themselves and many baby boomers being far left wingers with no ability to see the issues which millennials are and will be facing. For this reason alone millennials try to study at university in far greater numbers than some generations before. Some baby boomers may mistake this for a well functioning system but it is actually a way for female Germans to protect themselves from sexism through qualification and a general attempt of millennials to protect themselves from the future which they prior generations set up for them.In conclusion it is the most offensive comment possible for many millennials to pretend as if they wouldn’t want children. They do.
