Does Finland really give new mothers a cardboard box full of baby items, including a mattress for the baby?

Yes it does and you can choose if you prefer to take instead cash. The Act on Maternity Allowance was enacted in 1937 and the distribution of grants began in the following year. The subsidy was first intended for needy workers. In the background there was concern about declining birth rates and high child mortality rates. Mothers were given maternity benefit through health care. In Finland, childhood and maternal mortality have long been among the lowest in the world. In the first years, the maternity allowance was awarded and paid by the maternity care center. In 1938, about two-thirds of the women were given maternity benefit. Then the maternity allowance was FIM 450 for each child born. The sum corresponded to the high average monthly wage of an industrial worker. The grant was granted in cash or in kind or partly in both forms. The maternity allowance became available to all mothers in 1949.Kela has been responsible for the maternity allowance since 1994. Prior to the delivery of the maternity package, the Social Welfare Board (the current Department of Health and Welfare) and the State Procurement Center are responsible.Today, almost all first-born mothers choose a maternity package, and only one-third of all mothers choose a maternity allowance in cash.Maternity packaging has been unique worldwide for decades.Governement distributes approximately 60,000 maternity benefits each year, of which about 40,000 are maternity packages. For many years now, the color scheme of the maternity package textiles has been neutral to make the clothes suitable for girls and boys. Neutral colors are also easier to combine with other colors. Before the mid-1970s, the maternity package textiles were mostly white.Maternity packaging is very traditional, but at the same time annual renewal. It has become increasingly ecological. Since 2000, the packaging includes have been wearing casings.

I am 19 and currently 7 months pregnant. The father is 16 and still in school and has told me he is unable to pay child support and wants no part in his child's life. What do I do?

Firstly I'm assuming you are in the UK where it is legal to have sex at 16, because if you are in the states or somewhere it is only legal from 18 he's classed as a child and that makes you a sex offender. As said before I assume you are in the UK because it would be really stupid of you to ask for child support or declare he's the father if he was underage. Anyhow, as I'm in the UK myself then I can try help.Unfortunately if he's still in school you can't get him to pay child support, he's not making an income and he probably won't for a while, if you get wind of him finding work you can apply for CMS and they will take it out of his wages. He can deny he's the father but then CMS can get a court order for a DNA test, which will prove he's the father and he will have to pay child maintenance. Otherwise make sure you apply for your child benefit and child tax credits and if you have been working make sure you look into get your Maternity allowance if you no longer work there or Maternity pay if you are still working there and have for 25 weeks. As for him actually being involved in child's life, I'm afraid you can't force him to do that but give him every opportunity to be involved, not for him but so you can hold your head up high and look your child in the eye and tell him or her you tried. As for the comments telling you to put baby for adoption, ignore them they need to get off their high horses. I've known teenage single mothers be better parents that 30 year old “intact” families. You'll do just fine. Baby has a better chance with you than in a broken Foster care system. Being a single parent doesn't mean you will do badly, baby will be looked after and loved, that's all baby needs.
