My daughter's 1st grade teacher refused to let her use the restroom, and she ended up wetting herself. There have been additional incidents and conversations with other school officials. Should we talk to the teacher?

I do not usually get involved with these kind of problems, but as I am a psychologist and paediatrician I feel I must say something to you about this type of treatment your daughter received. This behaviour by a teacher or anyone come the that, is exceptionally unacceptable.I would report this to the school governors or board of education as this person has some how slipped through the system posing as a teacher in my opinion. The psychological problems that could come from this action is something you do not want or need.I do not want to give you the impression I am trying to scare you, but it is in the early stages of learning, what is right and wrong, how to behave etc. etc. that the teachers are responsible for whilst they have the care of the child. That starts at the beginning bell until the end of day bell. The school is responsible for all children, regardless of age, when they are in the school or on school approved trips. This person needs a lesson about what “duty of care” means. This applies to all countries as far as I know and I certainly know that both the USA and the UK have these rules in place.A young child needing the toilet and being punched is something that should have been addressed by the teacher and as she is not bothering nor caring enough to treat young children at this stage of learning, has a lot to answer for.She should lose her license to teach and be re-trained if she is going to stay in this kind of work.I do hope you will take this to the limit and teach this person a lesson she will not forget and I mean legally not with any shouting or violence as this will only tell the teacher she comes from a line of abusive people.Judging by the way you have worded this question you sound like a very caring and loving parent.I do hope you will have your daughter moved to another teacher as soon as.I wish you both well.

What is it like going to a British boarding school? Is it anything like Hogwarts?

I went to two different boarding schools in the UK for a total of five years, one in the south east and another in the West Midlands. And while there are some parts like Hogwarts, there are a lot of differences. Let's talk similarities first:Uniforms are worn, and indeed, much like Hogwarts, the basic form consists of a buttoned shirt and either a skirt or trousers. Tights or socks are worn, and layers such as a cardigan or jumper may be added along with a school-approved scarf. We don't wear those robes though, blazers are used instead. I would imagine that the hems would get wet very easily when it rains. For example, here’s me and my best friend mucking around on the school’s astro. I’m the one in without the jumper. (Note: our faces and the school logo are blurred for privacy)Houses, they exist. And depending on the school, there may be a fierce rivalry between them, mine didn’t have it. My schools separated houses and boarding houses, some schools combine them. My schools placed you in a boarding house based on your age/year, while the house was either random or the same as an older sibling/parent alumnus. No almighty sorting hat that determines your fate.Prefects, although I think many state comprehensives also have this alongside public schools and grammar schools. Unlike Hogwarts, where fifth-years are allowed to be a prefect, both schools I went to only allowed sixth formers to be prefects. They have a lot of responsiblities and were always busy, they had jobs such as planning events like the annual Christmas ball. There were different prefects, such as boarding prefect, sports prefect, music prefect etc. alongside the head girls and deputy head girls (I went to an all girls’ school). There are accents from all over the British isles and even abroad. Most British public schools are not fully boarding, there are some day students that live within commuting distance. I had classmates and teachers from China, Malaysia, Nigeria, Russia, South Africa just to name a few outside England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland. There is mandatory homework (prep) time. I remember that scene in the movies where Snape presses down Harry and Ron’s heads (see below). Well, while our prep teachers didn’t really do that as it may be seen as corporal punishment, they did shush us when we were meant to be doing silent study in the library.Trips to the nearby town, and requiring parental consent to do so. In the third book, Harry goes out of his way to go to Hogsmeade as his aunt and uncle are unwilling to sign the form. Everything was digital by the time I was at school, and my parents had to sign a digital form to give me permission to take the bus to the nearby town so I could buy daily necessities (toiletries, snacks and the whatnot).Old buildings. While my school wasn’t a castle that had talking paintings (how creepy is that), there were several old, grand buildings as part of the campus. The first school I went to had an old church and a graveyard as the school chapel. There were also new buldings housing more modern facilities such as science labs, I spent most of my time there as a science student.Sports teams, there was no quidditch, and brooms, although there were actual sports teams like any other school. Mainly lacrosse, hockey, and netball for girls and many more. I think boys played football and rugby, but can’t be too sure. I wasn’t at all sporty and broke my glasses when a basketball flew in my face. Now, the parts that aren’t realistic, well, no magic that’s for sure. No wands, and definitely no ghosts and ferocious beaasts. Just the housemistress’ cats and dogs.No pets allowed for students. While Harry Potter had his trusty snowy owl Hedwig alongside him for his duration at Hogwarts, in real life we definitely were not allowed animals unless they were of the stuffed cuddly type belonging on a bed. We were also allowed to decorate our living space to a certain degree, just regular things like don’t stick anything on the painted walls. The subjects at Hogwarts. Regular British boarding schools do regular GCSE’s and A-Levels. Or equivalent programs such as IB MYP’s and diplomas, or Pre-U’s. The subjects though are different in every school, although the same cores remain, English, Maths and Science.Much stricter security is the norm in real life. In actual British law, children in boarding schools cannot sleep on the ground floor, so our bedrooms were either on the first floor or higher up, it made for horrible nights during the heatwave though. Also, modern security such as alarms are used very often these days. No sneaking out in the middle of the night to release a dragon. There’s no such thing as a Hogwarts Express, the only thing the school might do is arrange a shuttle service to and from a central point (e.g. nearest train station) or you drive in yourself. Both things are rather common.Oh, and children are not allowed an offensive weapon that can kill others with them at all times. For younger years, you can’t even have your phone with you. Giving children wands all permanently is like giving them knives outside of mealtimes.Being in boarding school is a weird yet fulfiling opportunity, at least to me. I gained myself a set of friends akin to Harry, Ron and Hermione. Being surrounded by the same people twenty four seven for weeks on end, if they’ve seen you in your underwear, or just wrapped in a towel ready to shower, you end up really good friends for life. Or worst enemies, depending on the person.

Is it legal for a teacher to mark a student absent while they know that the student is in school (in Canadian secondary school)?

In America a student is absent if they are not in class or in a school approved field trip. Students must get permission from teachers to be absent from individual classes — they are allowed to be tardy with a pass. Administrators and counselors can keep a student out of class without teacher permission. If you were marked absent for one of those reasons, go back to that person and have them contact the attendance clerk to change the absent mark.
