Anon beat me to this answer, but Super Tic-Tac-Toe is a game my friends and I loved to play in high school. Hope you enjoy, and feedback always welcome!Here is a link: Super Tic-Tac-ToeEDIT: I initially refrained from explaining the rules of the game because there was previously another post that wrote out everything I would have said, but that answer has since been removed for whatever reason, so I will go through the rules to one of my favorite games.Super Tic-Tac-Toe is played with a 3x3 grid of tic tac toe boards, like soFor the first move, the player can choose any of the 81 squaresNow for the second move, player 2 only has a small set of legal moves as denoted by the boxes highlighted in white. Since player 1 has played in the top right square of some grid, player 2 must play in the top right grid of the entire board, it's a kind of meta tic-tac-toe. This is the one key rule to the game that takes people the longest time to grasp.A player can win a local game by getting 3 in a row in that grid.Once a player wins a grid, he/she has ownership of that grid for the rest of the game. The objective is to win 3 grids in a row, and the player to do so wins. If neither player fails to do so, the game ends in a draw, even if a given player has won more grids.There is one last rule to mention. We have discussed the notion of "forcing" players to other grids, but because players can win entire grids, what happens if one is forced to a grid that is full or has been won? There is some disagreement between people I've played with about what to do in this situation, but the way I play, this allows the other player to play anywhere in the entire board, which is a bad thing, so you should generally avoid forcing someone to a filled grid.Anyway, if any of this seemed interesting to you, I would recommend downloading my app. It's entirely free, no paid features or anything, just trying to share with others a game that I love.

One might think that there are nine possible first moves, with eight possible second moves. That would generate 72 possible board positions after the second player makes their first move.If you think about the game for a while, you’ll see how there are even fewer possible games of Tic Tac Toe than you might initially believe. There are exactly 3 possible first moves: let’s call them center, side, or corner. On an empty board, all four sides are the same, as are all four corners. So right there, we went from nine to three.If the first player played center, the second player has exactly two options: side, or corner. Looking at a board with just the center taken, all four sides are equal, as are the four corners.If the first player played a side, then the second player has exactly five options: center, near corner (there are two, no difference between them), far corner (same), near side (again, two) or the far side.If the first player played a corner, again, five options: center, near side (two and the same), far side (there are two, it doesn’t matter which), near corner (the two found horizontally and vertically from the played corner) or far corner (the one found diagonally).That got us down from 72 to 12. I won’t go further, and after this point there isn’t almost any redundancy, but you get the idea.Tic Tac Toe is a game that can be perfected, quite easily, to a point where one simply never loses. Not only that, it’s so simple, one can memorize how to play it perfectly without ever having played it.Edit: It has been pointed out in the comments and I just checked, there are 8 “strategy” mistakes on this map.If X plays a corner;O plays middle;X plays one of the far sides;O plays the corner opposite from the one X started on;X plays the side opposite the one they played on their previous move; andO blocks X’s line, the board would now look like this:O_OXOX_ _ XAnd it’s X’s move. But O has set up two winning moves and X can’t block both, so it’s the Tic Tac Toe equivalent of a Check Mate. If X decides to block the diagonal by playing bottom left, O would win by playing top middle, but the map says O should play bottom middle and the game ends on a tie.

As a deterministic, turn-based game with complete information, tic-tac-toe is not alone. Checkers and chess etc. all have definitive winning strategies, the difference is that there are so many possible moves that humans have difficulty finding out the winning strategy (in the case of Chess, we still have yet to figure one out... statement to be edited in 2018 by my prediction).So to eliminate definitive winning strategies, here are a few general ideas:1) Make it non-deterministic. This is kind of silly since the game usually degenerates into "luck". Something like giving you a chance to "miss" a square and have your X or O appear in a neighboring square. Interestingly enough, about every casual tabletop game requires some form of non-deterministic-ness to make it exciting.2) Make it non-turn-based. So strategy isn't the only factor. It's now a "skill based" game.3) Make it with incomplete information. Have players play blind, with absolutely no idea about where their opponents are moving.4) Enlarge the state space. Make a 9x9 board instead of a 3x3 board. There is a very creative modification of Tic-Tac-Toe that has you play 9 games of Tic-Tac-Toe (anyone with a link can help), with 9 3x3 boards, and where you move determines the next board that you can move in. Certainly has a definitive winning strategy, but with too many moves and consequences for people to come up with easily.
