To/ ReaderSome soldiers did fire while lying down and hiding. These were generally skirmishers, though or ones defending fortifications (Walled Cities, Castles), who would be hiding but not lying down. However, these troops would only lie down to steady their aim and be back up to at least a kneeling position and reloading immediately afterwards. Most soldiers stood in squares or lines for the following reasons.WeaponryThe weapons available to common soldiers were flintlock muskets.These are muzzle loading guns that can only hold one round at a time₁. This meant that after each shot, the soldier would have to take a paper cartridge out of his pouch/cartridge box, empty the gunpowder into the pan then push the ball down the muzzle using the ramrod. This would be nearly impossible to do while prone so if they laid flat and shot like modern soldiers do, they would have just one shot, then the musket would only be useful as a short spear or club, neither of which are weapons you can use while lying down.CavalryCavalry were probably the 2nd biggest threat to Infantry, only being surpassed by the Artillery. I think they were joint second to facing volley fire in a column formation. Against these, if your shot missed you would be screwed, as the cavalryman would probably ride his horse over you, Squish, trampling you even further into the ground in the process and probably breaking a few bones. It may even be enough to kill you. He wouldn’t need to use his sword unless you tried to get up and run.Other (Edit in response to comments)A couple of the commenters₂ have pointed out that I missed the command and control and accuracy issues. The accuracy issues I can accept, but the command and control was largely accomplished by drums, bugles and orders from superior officers.
