PDF Editor FAQ

Why do people learn Spanish? Is it for work, music, telenovelas, or other?

So my first exposure to Spanish was in a World Language class in middle school. I lied the class, loved the teacher, but hated the language (looking back I think it's because I had a bunch of idiots in my class and we just did basic easy things like memorizing numbers and days of the week). Then my World Language teacher (who was ultimately a Spanish teacher and speaks Spanish fluently) did something very kind for me.The next year in high school I meet this kid in French class who is now my best friend (Hi Hunter I know you're reading this). I was a freshman and he was a junior and with the help of two Spanish classes, native speakers, and a general interest in languages in general (and a love and passion for Spanish) he was already fluent. Our friendship basically grew out of our mutual interest of linguistics and learning languages). I told him that I spoke German one day and he was like “okay, I want to test this out. Teach me a little bit of German because I'm curious about it” So I did. And he wasn't interested. And then e started to try to persuade me to learn Spanish. I resisted until May of my freshman year. Then he said that he wasn't sure whether he wanted to go into language teaching or a different career and that he needed me to be his guinea pig. So, being his best friend, I did become his guinea pig. We flew through the basics due to my knowledge of French and other foreign languages. Then, he actually started teaching me challenging grammar and vocabulary and I disdained it. I tried to goof off and not learn as much as I could. But, by then I can form simple sentences and communicate basic ideas and understand A LOT from him talking to me in Spanish all the time. So as much as I wanted to fool around and not learn, I couldn't help myself. I was hooked. I genuinely liked the language. So then I made friends. I have made three really good Spanish speaking friends so far (Hunter a non-native; Gabriel, a native from Mexico; and Liliana, a native from Colombia). I love these people, I'm friends with them, and I'd love to be able to help them with their English and communicate with them in Spanish.Towards the end of my freshman year and then the beginning of my sophomore year, Hunter introduced me to one of our high school’s Spanish teachers. We simply call her Señora. Everyone does. She is a character. She's funny and relatable, and practically best friends with Hunter (he graduated and they sometimes communicate and hang out outside of school). She hit it off with me and helped us out by providing us with the textbook that she uses to teach her Spanish 1 and 2 kids, some short stories and worksheets, and even gave Hunter a textbook that she uses in Spanish 4. She gave me PDF versions of 3 textbooks (hehe shush that's illegal) and she did everything she could to help me. I spent almost every day in her classroom during homeroom and study hall, and toward the end the year she gave me passes every day to her Spanish 2 class when they were reading a story and asked me to help her help them with it. So I did. And now her Spanish 3 class is on my schedule for next year. She wanted me to take Spanish, so of course I was like “"Hell yeah this'lol be fun!” so she laughed and told me to schedule a Spanish class for next year and that she'd let me skip a year or two to put me in a class that's my level. So, I scheduled for Spanish 2. She seen this and then changed it to Spanish 4. I told her about my insecurities and that this would mean that I wouldn't have h e my senior year, and so we agreed that I'd be put in Spanish 3 next year :DNow I still study on my own because I love the language. It has grown on me. Ultimately I'd like to learn Spanish to give myself a sense of completion, another rush like when I realized that I can actually speak and understand German without a problem. I aslo want to communicate with my Spanish-speaking friends in only a way that could be achieved by speaking the person’/ native language. I really also want to make both Señora and Miss Y and Hunter proud, and eventually be able to show them what they all helped to teach me, and to thank them all personally in Spanish. And that's why I learn Spanish.Because I love the language and I love the people.

What are some cookbooks that are old-fashioned?

How old fashioned do you want to get? Shall we go backwards in time by gentle steps?I like to look through garage sales and flea markets for old school women's club and church cookbooks. They had a heyday ftom the early part of the 20th century to about 1950 or 1960. You can also find any number of them online, all public domain. The ones featuring award winning pies are especially interesting to me, but you can find casseroles, breakfast cookbooks, and the dreaded Jell-O salads in all their dubious, but ubiquitous glory.Any of the James Beard cookbooks will give you a solid underpinning in the style of food popular from the forties to the early 70s. His American Cookery was published in 1972. Maybe that's not old enough, but Beard's style was largely formed by his mother's hotel cookery, and she seems to have been anchored pretty solidly in the Golden Age.Step a bit further back, and you run into Fanny Farmer. The first American cookbook that set the form for listing ingredients by volume, and then describing how to cook the food. The original cookbook was published in 1896, when Farmer was running the Boston Cooking School, and it has been continually in print, which gives you some idea of its popularity and relevance. In ot you will find recipes for such delights as Terrapin a la Baltimore, Terrapin a la Maryland, and of course, Calf’s Head a la Terrapin. Not old enough, you say? Too American?Check out Juan Altamira's New Art of Cookery, A Spanish friar’s kitchen notebook. Written in 1775, and translated by Vicky Hayward, it provides a marvelous glimpse into 18th century Spanish cooking. If you want a sense of what English and American cooking was like during the same period, you can find Martha Washington's cookbook online as a pdf. It's largely recipes copied from other sources, most of them English, since that was what upper class Ameticans ate at the time, or aspired to eat.You can go further back if you like. There are numerous translations of medieval cookbooks, including The Form of Cury and the Menagier de Paris. You can go even further back, and read Apicius to discover how the ancient Romans dined. There are hundreds of historic cookbooks available, many of them available for free on sites like Project GutenbergBe warned. The originals are not easy to cook from, even in translation. They assume a base knowledge of cooking and ingredients not often accessible to us moderns, they can be maddeningly vague concerning how much of any ingredient goes into a dish, and the further back in time you go, the more likely you are to come across terms that mean nothing to modern eyes. But if you persevere, and are willing to accept a certain failure rate, you can have a lot of fun.

Wow! Customer service is A1! I needed to fill out some forms for an outfit, a one-time thing, and signed up for the trial month. Later in the month I tried to cancel the trial period before my credit card was charged the $20, but I forgot which email account I'd used to sign up, so I was unable to log in to my CocoDoc account. Today, when I received the email saying my credit card was charged the $20, I was able to contact CocoDoc since I now knew which account I'd used. I contacted them via "Contact Support" in their website and explained my situation. OMG! When it said I should receive an email in 20 minutes or less, I was thinking, "Yeah, right!" but it was literally only minutes before I received an email saying they would be glad to cancel the subscription and refund my money. If I ever need this type of service on a more regular basis, I will definitely be signing up with this company!
