PDF Editor FAQ

What are the biggest problems facing the US economy?

Too much capital chasing other capital rather than being invested in physical improvements. It’s much easier to raise tens of millions of dollars to start some half-baked internet business than to build a factory.Low end wages are too low. In an economy driven by consumer spending, too many people on the minimum wage scale can’t afford to be involved in the economy. This leads to problem #3.Too much consumer debt. That’s because people don’t make much and necessities like houses and cars can be borrowed on cash. This isn’t the consumer’s fault mind you. It’s largely a combination of easy credit and high expectations. During the housing crisis leading up to 2007, lenders actually encouraged borrowers to over borrow because that’s how they made their money.Too much business debt, not enough capital. Most U.S. enterprises are run on cheap credit. There are lots of reasons for this, but it started in the leveraged buyout era of the 1980s when businesses became convinced that it was more profitable to take on debt than to raise “expensive” capital. That worked fine until 2007 and 2020 when money to finance debt dried up overnight.Student debt. Going to university is now pretty much your only option if you want a job but it’s going to cost you about eight times what it cost me, if you’re lucky. Young graduates used to look forward to buying a house and car, but due to loan debt they can’t afford it.

As a European, why don’t you want to live in America?

I’m a Belgium citizen and I don’t want to live in the USA (although there are also parts of American culture I do like, like the vast National Parks, American movies mostly from the 70s and 80s era and some contemporary American authors like Chomsky, Bukowski, Hunter S Thompson, Anthony Bourdain …).I think most people who want to migrate to the USA have either never been there (I traveled around the USA twice) or are severely influenced by misleading American propaganda. What I don’t like about America compared to my own country Belgium. This article is based on my own personal experience having traveled twice in the USA and Asia and on general facts and stats everyone is free to double-check:Criminality:In Belgium, it’s quite difficult to obtain a gun.Gun control is very strict and I’m all for it. The crime rate and amount of violent incidents involving the use of guns are statistically far lower in Belgium than in the USA (not opinion, but a fact). More people are imprisoned in the USA than any other developed nation in the world (not opinion, but a fact). The USA has a far too loose policy on gun ownership, resulting in a far higher violent crime rate in the USA.To me it seems ridiculous a USA-citizen is even allowed to buy a semi-automatic rifle and you can even buy bullets in a regular supermarket like Walmart. It’s a recipe for disaster and the proof is in the statistics on how many people get killed each year in the USA in violent crimes involving the use of guns. Nevertheless, and despite the result, the profit of the weapon manufacturing industry in the US needs to be protected. ‘Guns don’t kill people’, they say, ‘a finger on the trigger does’ to justify the sale of weapons, or profits need to be protected rather than the safety of the general public. If so many people in the US want to own weapons to protect themselves, for me that’s a sign a far majority of the USA citizens do not perceive their own country to be safe. Here are the most recent statistics of 2017 to back it up:4 cities in the USA are now in the top 50 list of the most dangerous cities IN THE WORLD to live in, according to murder rate per capita:St-Louis, Baltimore, Detroit, and New Orleans.Europe, nor Asia don’t even have one city in the top 50 list.(Source: Worlds' most dangerous cities 2017, by murder rate | Statistic )I’ve traveled a lot including Asia (China, Thailand, and Cambodia) and the USA twice ( I visited NY, LA, San Francisco, Las Vegas, Ohio, Utah, Arizona, Cleveland… ) so I can also compare from my own personal experience.Even in poor areas or suburbs in Asia (both Thailand and China) I never felt unsafe, while in Los Angeles the first night I arrived someone already stole my rental car from the Holiday Inn parking lot. Before I never had anything stolen from me on any of my travels except for in the USA, despite I’ve traveled to some pretty poor areas in Asia as well. The hotel manager on my request called the police, but the line was busy, so I had to grab a cab to the police station. Just imagine you needed urgent help and you are not even able to reach the police because the line is constantly busy. The police officer who wasn’t at all surprised my car was stolen even told me ‘Oh, it’s probably in Mexico by now’ in a casual way as if this is something normal to get your rental car stolen. In some areas of L.A., N.Y. and S.F. it is really unsafe.I wanted to visit some film locations in L.A. of the movie ‘Heat’.When I asked for directions Americans even advised me to not go into certain suburbs: that’s how ‘safe’ American citizens feel about their own country and how safe it is to travel in the USA (unless you only stick to the main tourist areas). In comparison: in Beijing China, I forgot my expensive DSLR-camera on the back seat of a cab. It was probably worth a month of wage to the cabby. The cab company even brought the camera back to me, free of charge, they simply considered this the right thing to do. No Chinese ever told me: do not go into certain suburbs because it’s unsafe. In fact, many Chinese people in shabby suburbs were even welcoming to a foreign guest. And although due to American propaganda I had the idea of China to be very controlling, I could take photos no matter where I went: on Tian An Men, in shabby suburbs, I even was welcome to visit Chinese parliament and take all the photos I wanted. Many Chinese living in the suburbs had even never seen a foreigner in real life so they were really curious someone came into their neighborhood and not all threatening. A huge difference between China and the USA.I feel far safer in my own country Belgium, in China and in Thailand than in the USA. You’ll find criminality everywhere, no matter where you go, but the USA tops it big time and besides, there is a serious drug epidemic of both prescribed and illegal drugs. The American Dream is so nice, Americans need huge quantities of painkillers, antidepressants, and opioids in order to cope with it.Most USA-tourists only see the heavily guarded tourist areas, they get on and off the tourist bus at designated areas, but as I traveled by myself I was able to go beyond the pretty ‘facade’ and the usual postcard scenery. I saw many homeless people, far higher in numbers than in Belgium, mostly drug addicts and mental patients who don’t have the money for proper treatment and therapy, living on the street: it’s an absolute disgrace for a country like the USA who likes to portray itself as a highly developed and civilized country. When you are in L.A., instead of only visiting Beverly Hills and Hollywood Boulevard, well go to an area which is called ‘Skid Row’ and there you’ll see the other side of the USA, of course, this isn’t advertised in the tourist brochure.Social securityIn Belgium, each employee and employer pays a fixed percentage for social security based on the salary. As such when people are unemployed, sick or retire, they still have a reasonable income. One can also choose to have extra health insurance, but the basic package is already provided by the state for every Belgian citizen. We also have what is called a ‘maximum bill’. Once you need to pay more, the state pays so anyone who has a chronic disease will never run out of money to pay for treatment. I think it’s plain ridiculous for a developed country like the USA, some people still have to start fundraisers in order to pay for surgery they need (or even worse if they have a sick kid) or end up with huge debt in order to pay for some necessary medical treatments.FACT: people can still die in the USA because they don’t have the money for surgery or proper medication. This is simply incredible for a country which considers itself to be highly developed (at least for the richest in the USA that is).EducationThe cost of education is far lower in Belgium than in the US, because education is highly subsidized by the state to ensure that everyone who has the intellectual capacity will get the opportunity for a good education. In the US, it seems that getting a good education has far more to do with already being wealthy enough to pay for that education and many students are highly in debt by the time they graduate. In Belgium, the price for good quality education is far lower than in the US and students do not typically end up with a huge amount of debt in order to pay for it.PoliticsIt seems in the US, you basically only have the choice between being a Democrat or a Republican. Only if you have huge loads of money you can run as an independent candidate, so anyone who aspires to be a politician can either choose the Democrat or Republican power structure of which history has already proven they are in fact both corrupt (falsifying of history, covert operations mingling in foreign affairs, waging war under false pretence, breach of privacy on international level, bailing out Wall Street banks and CEO’s although the USA is an advocate of free-market -unless of course like in 2008 American financial institutions cause a worldwide financial crisis and need to be saved with tax money from ordinary Joe … the list goes on and on).Not only that, but USA-citizens who actually provided FACTUAL PROOF of misconduct by the USA government and grave intrusions against their own constitution, had to escape the USA (like Snowden who beyond any doubt has proven that the USA were basically spying on everyone on an international level) in fear of being imprisoned for life or someone who provided evidence of grave misconduct of the American military, killing innocent civilians on foreign soil was imprisoned for 35 years by a military, not even a civilian court. Former military Chelsea Manning was convicted not because the evidence he provided was falsified, he was convicted for basically telling the truth to the general public and this was considered anti-American.The USA has imprisoned people without trial or even allowing them to be represented by a lawyer (which is again a grave intrusion against their own constitution), including the use of torture in USA-prisons on foreign soil. THIS IS NOT OPINION BUT FACT.I consider a choice between electing a Democrat or a Republican as preferring Mastercard or Visa. In Belgium, we have over 5 political parties to choose from ranging from the liberal, socialist, communist, environmental party, nationalist, Christian, …Belgium is far more democratic than the US. Because we have far more political parties, it also ensures that power is far more distributed amongst different people with different viewpoints. I think the election process in the US is irrational: if one would simply count the number of votes a candidate has, by this definition Hillary Clinton would have won. But now although he had fewer votes, Trump won. A candidate with fewer votes of the total population ends up being their president anyway. Trump can not even state he represents the majority of USA-citizens because based on the numbers he simply doesn’t. A lot of USA-citizens even choose to not vote, which is an expression they don’t even care anymore who gets elected. The non-voters probably came to the conclusion it doesn’t matter anyway who gets elected.CommercializationThe US has commercialized just about anything: media, health care, … I think certain goods are far too important for the general public to be commercialized. If you commercialize media for instance well what will happen in general is, the media will generate news which sells the most copies or attracts the most viewers, because not content but profit is the most important. In commercialized media, the most profit comes from advertisers and advertisers are interested in showing their ad to as many readers or viewers as possible. So there is constant pressure on commercialized media to attract as many readers and viewers. So, in general, they’ll try to make the news spectacular or zoom in on trivial celebrity news. It’s amazing how many Americans know more about the life of Kim Kardashian than international news.Compared to the US, Belgium has a good blend of public broadcasting, funded by government and private-owned media.I was even surprised to find, for a country which wants to portray itself as rich and prosperous so many American civilians do not even have the money to pay for a holiday traveling around in their own country, let alone they could travel abroad. Their viewpoints of other nations are highly constructed by American media and propaganda. For instance: when I told some Americans I had visited China, they perceived this as highly dangerous. They were even more surprised when I had to tell them based on my own travel experiences the USA is actually less safe than China for travel: a far lower crime rate, I never had anything stolen in China, in fact, they returned goods I lost back to me, they did not fingerprint me to enter like in the USA, they did not tell me to not go into certain neighborhoods like in the USA, … What most Americans who do not have the money for travel know from abroad is simply determined by highly subjective commercial media. Fox News for instance: it has nothing to do with journalism, it’s sensationalism. The ‘buy on credit’ culture in the USACompared to my own country Belgium. In the US most citizens have accumulated a large amount of debt on their credit cards. Of course, debt is not free: it only makes the banks and credit providers richer, so people are encouraged to spend more than they earn. In Belgium, typically people only buy property (house, apartment, … ) on credit (simply because it would take far too long for most people to save the entire sum). There is also ‘consumer’ credit in Belgium, like in the US, but Belgium citizens, in general, seem to be far more educated and less focused on ‘instant gratification’ than Americans. In Belgium, the far majority of people will decide to not buy if they can not afford it, although of course banks have tried to encourage people to buy on credit. This seems to be a very notable difference between the USA and Belgium financial culture. In the US if you can not afford it: buy on credit, but in Belgium, in general, this kind of behavior is discouraged and by law credit lenders must provide sufficient and detailed information how much people would spend if they buy on credit versus paying with money you already earned, resulting in far less debt for most people.American propagandaAnd then, in general, I felt that many Americans (especially in the larger cities) are self-indulgent. Many Americans, due to the propaganda of their government truly think they are number one or pretend to think they know what’s best for the rest of the world. They even find it surprising if you constantly wage wars around the world, some disgruntled people may cause 9/11, while the amount of civilian victims of 9/11 is next to nothing compared to all the civilians who have died on foreign soil thanks to American interventions in some cases even invasions. Americans will make a huge fuss about an American citizen or soldier being killed abroad, but not mentioning the huge number of innocent civilian deaths they have caused around the world. Two atomic bombs on Japan literally incinerating civilians and children all at once to state just one historical fact, chemical warfare in Vietnam using napalm (just imagine a civilian getting sprayed with a pesticide). They will call this ‘collateral damage’: it sounds better than simply saying during a USA-intervention or invasion, so many civilians lost their lives. To me, there is no difference in the worth of ‘life’ of an American, Belgium, Chinese, Arab, African, … life. A human life is a human life. And there is NO such thing as a clean war in which innocent civilians do not get killed. And if some get killed by American interventions and invasions, well don’t be surprised they will hit back on American soil.Americans seem to want to turn everyone into an American. They will invade foreign countries under the pretense of spreading democracy or human rights, while basically, they are interested in having more American multinationals everywhere to build up a country they first helped to demolish. The far majority of American civilians seem to be unaware of how American propaganda of their own government determines the way they perceive the world. That is why it’s good propaganda of course: the best propaganda people are simply not aware of, they think it’s a reality. If one sees the same message on tv every day, one might just believe it’s true.Belgian citizens, in general, are far more modest and in general, don’t think it’s right to mingle in someone else their foreign affairs. Of course, the USA is only interested in mingling in foreign affairs if there is a profit to be made but they like to come across as ‘saviors’. American wars are fought with the tax money of every American, but the profits are reeked by the private industry and companies who go in after a foreign country has been thoroughly destroyed. The result is the USA Nation’s debt climbed to a record of $ 21.21 trillion at the end of June, a 6.9% increase from a year earlier. (official and latest figure from the US Treasury). Although Trump would like to make Americans believe he’s a great politician and businessman, the debt of the US has increased with 6,9 % during his presidency and this is only in the last year. Who will pay for all this debt: well, of course, ordinary Joe mostly, because social, welfare or cultural programs will be the first cut to reduce the deficit.Although the US is considered by Belgium to be an ally because of WW II, these days many Belgian citizens are very critical about American culture and most think Trump is an idiot and a complete fraud. The USA has fallen ‘out of grace’ with the majority of Belgian citizens, who before Trump were rather neutral and even positive about Obama and now have become anti USA, thanks to the ridiculous, arrogant and self-indulgent behavior of Trump.Anyway, even if half of the Americans voted on Trump (which they didn’t), one should also conclude that half of the Americans actually like bad and rude manners, racism, arrogant and self-indulgent behavior or inform themselves only using tv and so-called ‘reality’ shows.I consider it near impossible a figure like Trump could ever be elected in Belgium, because he would have been exposed by decent journalists for what he is: a man who was born into riches and who doesn’t have the slightest idea how working-class people live, a protegee of his rich father, Trump even went financially bankrupt in his career, banks had either the choice to save Trump or risk losing their loans because he had become ‘too big to fail’. A man who would rather spend money on another ludicrous golf course or another lick of gold paint for his penthouse then to help the poor although he considers himself to be a Christian. A man if he hadn’t been born in a rich family we would have probably never ever heard of because he is basically plain dumb and ignorant and anything he accomplished is based on having the money to hire REAL experts who unlike Trump actually do know what they are talking about. If you ask a Trump-voter why they voted on Trump they’ll tell you because ‘he isn’t part of the establishment’ while he actually represents the establishment and big corporate interest and surely not ordinary Joe living in a trailer park or on the street in the US. His main goal is simply to drive up the stock market.Trump even produced his apparel in China and sold it in Trump towers with a big profit, while now he’s accusing China of having stolen jobs from the USA. How hypocritical can one be?Here is the proof: this is where Trump did business: CHINA.But hey, in the good old USA, if you’re rich enough you can even buy the media and anyone saying something about reality can be labeled ‘fake news’ by their own president. A man who is proud to ‘fire’ people, but who wouldn’t have accomplished much if he wasn’t born in a rich family to start out with.Of course, this article of which I do solemnly swear it is based on my own personal travel experiences in the USA and Asia but also on decent factual research would be labeled ‘fake news’ because it doesn’t conform with what American propaganda wants you to believe. But surely go to the USA, and search for ‘The American Dream’,you might find like I did when you wander outside the designated tourist areas, it’s actually a nightmare (unless you are rich, then it’s truly the land of milk and honey and you can live in an enclosed and high-security area, to keep the ‘bad guys’ out).Yes, a lot of rich people in the USA live in highly protected areas, so they wouldn’t have to see reality or even be afraid of it.

Why does China have Tao Te Ching but still lagging behind the USA? Isn't Tao Te Ching very powerful?

I don't know much about Chinese history, but I have heard that they had a stable civilization for thousands of years. Now the game has changed and China is a top exporter and lender. What do you mean by lag?
