What were the mistakes you made in the UPSC 2017?

Hi friends!Today, I want to explain in detail the mistakes committed by UPSC CSE 2018 AIR 64 GSS Praveenchand. This was his third attempt but I have taken his story as he failed to become an IAS officer in 2017 and came back in 2018 with AIR 64.Lets enjoy his story! It would be fun.About GSS PraveenchandHe belongs to East Godavari district of Andhra Pradesh. He did his B.Tech in Electrical Engineering from IIT Patna. Later , he worked as a ream leader for 3 years in software firm.Brief about why he wanted to become IASHe wanted to become IAS mainly because of his mother. She had planted this idea in his mind. She used to tell him that family doesn’t mean only parents and siblings, but also our society. She believed that happiness of one lies in happiness of the society. This played an important role in shaping his personality.Later as a student leader in college, he realised that public service is what gives him real satisfaction. So he decided to leave his high paying job and attempt civil services. Unfortunately, both his parents are no more, as he lost his mother at an early age and his father before his IIT exam. It was because of them he reached where he is, so he wanted to dedicate his success to them.Journey with UPSCHe gave total 3 attempts in UPSC civil services. During his first attempt, he reached up to the Interview but couldn’t make it to the final list. After the result, he was extremely disappointed as he had lost closely. He thought of leaving his preparation as he had exhausted his financial savings.During that phase, his sister ( Mounica) and friends ( Bharadwaj and Ekant Sharma ) stood by his side. He rejoined his previous company after giving prelims. In his second attempt he secured 512 rank and was allocated Indian Information Service(IIS). He resigned from his private sector job and joined IIS training. Simultaneously, he gave his third attempt and secured 64th rank. His book list and sourcesHistoryBrief history of modern India by Rajiv Ahir.Tamil Nadu history book – 11th class for medieval India [ pdf available on internet also ]RS Sharma old NCERT for Ancient IndiaIndian cultural heritage – Fine Arts NCERT, CCRT websiteNCERT – Post independence 11th classWorld history – VisionIAS bookletGeographyNCERT 11,12 – total 4 booksYouTube channel – Mrunal Geography playlist for better conceptual understanding , if needed.SocietyIndian society , 11th classPolityIndian constitution at work NCERTDD Basu – Introduction to constitution of India ( you may follow Lakshmikant as suggested by many others )EconomicsIntroduction to macroeconomics – NCERTIndian economy development – NCERTGovernment budgetEconomic surveySriram IAS economy bookletYouTube channel – Mrunal for better understanding of concepts ( very good source )Science and Technology6,7,8,9 class NCERTEnvironment12th class biology last four chapter on ecology and environmentDiaster ManagementLast chapter of Indian physical geographyNDMA websiteInternational frameworks like Sendai etcSecuritySriramias classroom notesEthicsEthics Integrity and Aptitude by Arihant PublicationsPrevious year question papers of UPSCCurrent affairsThe Hindu news paper – last page, first page , editorial pages , national pages , business page, international pages, , science and technology page.com website – daily current affairs and secureVisionIAS monthly compilationGovernment schemesFocus on schemes that comes in newspaper , economic survey and current affairs bookletsPrevious year question papersPrelims examination- very very importantMains previous year question papers since 2013StrategyPrelimsIn this stage, he was fortunate to score good marks in all the three attempts. His prelims paper 1 scores in all the attempts are as following :In 2016 : 138In 2017 : 150In 2018 : 120What he did for prelims ?He read basic books listed above , especially those important for prelims multiple times. For some he made his own notes, for others he highlighted within the text books. He used to do test series of Insights and VisionIAS. After giving every test, he used to go through the explanations very carefully. In every question, he used to read about other options as well. For examples, if a question is about National park, with four options : Corbett, Kanha, Kaziranga and Gir. He used to read basic information from first few paragraphs of WikiPedia or from relevant websites. This process he used for all the questions. This has helped in better retention, clarity, apart from expanding his knowledge base.He went through previous year question papers of UPSC prelims and revised important questions couple of times. For current affairs, he referred to the sources mentioned above.MainsHis booklist for mains remained same.He used to dedicate 50% of my time to General Studies and other 50% to prepare my optional i.e. MathematicsHere his focus was on improving answer writing. For that, he used to practice 2 questions everyday after prelims. Apart from this, he used to practice VisionIAS test series at home. He used to go through the answers of main test series provided by the institute very carefully. He revised every test at least 3 times. This helped in preparing various probable questions, as well as in bringing clarity to his answers. Further, due to this exercise, he was able frame answers in the exam hall in short duration, which has helped him to complete paper in time in all the papers.Coming to approach towards each paperGeneral Studies – 1One should thoroughly prepare NCERTs and standard text books. While writing answers in mains, quoting specific facts, examples and dates will help to score good marks. In social issues part, give examples from current affairs. In Geography, prepare the diagrams from NCERTs and use them appropriately in your answers.General Studies – 2In GS-2, first one should be thorough with constitution and governance aspects in our country. Using constitutional terminology, quoting relevant articles of the constitution and supreme court judgements in the answers plays key role to write good answers. One may use diagrams in international affairs part. E.g. Map of Belt and Road Initiative(BRI) if a question on BRI is askedGeneral Studies – 3There is lot of scope for flow charts and diagrams in economy. So, one should practice such things during preparation.Science & Technology can be largely prepared from current affairs. Do watch out for latest happenings about the keywords mentioned in the syllabusDisaster Management can be studied from NCERT and NDMA website. Through study of disaster life cycle and various international conventions like Sendai framework, etc will help to write well structured answers in mains. For environment, he studied 4 chapters of 12th class biology NCERT book. Apart from that, environment current affairs notes from The Hindu has helped him.Coming to security, he referred to sriram Ias class room notes. He augmented this with his notes from The Hindu newspaper.General Studies – 4One should prepare each term mentioned in the syllabus and make notes in their own language. He used to pick examples from his daily life and current events. He has referred to Ethics & Integrity book of Arihant Publications, one may use this book for selective reading. After prelims, he has practiced previous year UPSC questions. He revised those questions as well.EssayFor essay, he made framework for previous year essay topics. Framework included aspects likeDimensions to be coveredExamples from regional to international levelQuotesRecommendations of the committeesHe used to practice, 1 essay every week after prelims from InsightsPersonality testsHis scores during 3 personality tests are following2016 : 179 ( Vinay Mittal Sir Board )2017 : 179 ( Sujatha Mehta Ma’am Board )2018 : 157 ( Manoj Soni Sir Board )What I did for Interview ?He had thoroughly prepared my Detailed Application Form (DAF). He made around 30 keywords and from the DAF and prepared notes on each word in “question and answer” format. He also used to practice speaking out his opinions on current affairs in front of his laptop camera. He also recorded such videos and introspected his way of answer delivery. Apart from these, he used to practice with his friends (especially with Utsav, Rena, Deepak and Rickey ; he is thankful to them ) , where they used to take mock interview of one another. This was extremely helpful. He also used to watch Shahrukh khan speech from “Chak De India” and listen to “Enthavaraku” song ( from Telugu movie Gamyam) to boost his confidence on the interview day.Since interview tests one’s personality, it helps if one can groom it during the preparation. Honesty and integrity, problem solving skills, leadership qualities, etc are key aspects that are being tested here. So developing them during the preparation can certainly help. Don’t fake your personality, go to the interview with open mindset. Be yourself and give your best on the day. He always enjoyed interacting with experienced members during the interview, so will you.MathematicsI have scored 342 in mathematics optional. His mark sheetPrelimsMainsClosing words…If he can clear the exam, then each one of you can also do the same. I strong believe that anyone can learn anything, provided they have passion for it. If you think becoming an IAS and serving this great nation is your passion , then no one can stop you from becoming that. I wish each one of yours All the Best. Always remember, civil services is just one avenue to reach your goal, there are many other avenues waiting for you ,so don’t get disheartened if you can’t clear this exam. Find your passion in other fields and move on. Our country will move forward only if each one of us contributes in our respective fields, so let us do best in what ever work we do.Jai Hind!

What did you know before starting preparation for the UPSC exam?

Thanks for the A2A.I have been trying not to write this answer since I feel that my strategy is not the best way or probably not even a good one for new aspirants. I actually learnt a lot of things along the way and rejigged my ways as and how as I saw fit. That’s why I preferred to write Sectional answers so that I could help with specific queries of people.Given the demand for this answer, I will try to do as much justice as I can. :)Let’s get started!I will divide the strategy into two main parts (Static and Current) and further sub-parts (Prelims and Mains) with a word on Test Series and the biggest of all “THE MOTIVATION FACTOR” at the end.Static Prelims: Easiest Part of the ExamFinished Core booklist recommended for the exam which is as below:Laxmikanth for Polity coupled with Bare Act of Constitution for referenceSpectrum for Modern History as well as old NCERT (Bipin Chandra’s). Also included 11–12th new NCERTs as passing reference.Medieval History (Coaching Notes of KSG, glanced through Satish Chandra’s book)Ancient History (R.S. Sharma, few parts of Tamil Nadu Board’s book)Geography (Coaching Notes of KSG, 4 NCERTs of 11th-12th, GC Leong, Internet Digging to understand some static topics like Jet Stream, El Nino, etc., Map Study)Economics (Coaching Notes of KSG, Mrunal’s notes, Sriram’s notes, didn’t care about NCERTs much, Economic Survey and Budget)Art and Culture (Made my own notes from NCERTs, CCRT, NIOS and random searching of ASI website, looked at Singhania’s book as I came to know about his notes/book after finishing my own notes, so no point of repeating the same stuff)Environment (Shankar IAS notes/Book, Website surfing - Ministry for authentic data on National Parks, Tiger Reserves, etc - for some reason I wanted to attain perfection here :P)Science (Coaching Notes, NCERT Biology of 11/12th class - very few chapters)Sectional Tests of various coaching institutes to reinforce my learning and a huge emphasis on ACCURACY which eventually paid off (64/65 in CSE 2015)4–5 times RevisionsDynamic Prelims: ChallengingAs obvious, the first part is Newspaper. How did I make notes? While Reading the newspaper, I would highlight the main portionsFor notes, I went the Evernote-way. Never had a notebook or sheets for these notes. A bit of environmentalist here.In Evernote, I had Notebooks pertaining to different subjects like Polity, Economics, Geography, History, Society, International Relations, Art and Culture and few others. Each of these Notebook would have notes ranging from 20–80.I would incorporate The Hindu notes in these notes only. Thus, my notes were topic-wise and not date-wise.How is this done? Let’s see below.Let me take examples from today’s The Hindu (02.11.2019)There is an Article on The perils of post-370 diplomacy by Ms. Suhasini Haidar. I would already have a note on this topic of Article 370 in my International Relations Notebook and Polity too since it’s a topic has been raging since August 05, 2019.I would add only new points of this Article in my note. I could dictate that on my Android Phone or even tablet too. There is another Article on Page 11 Unearthing an ancient civilisation. It’s learning will go straight to my Art and Culture notes. This is how the entire newspaper has been given a place in the syllabus. That’s how I never lost sight of the syllabus. This might sound a lot of work to some. then why did i choose it?Allows editing, avoids repetition, maintain consistency throughout the preparation period.Golden way to revise things quickly. As notes became smaller and sharper, for my last revision, I would Merge notes, create a PDF, highlight and revise from there.Since I can’t just write it on Paper, I am forced to write as concisely as possible that would make the notes as crispy as humanly possibleYou don’t have to waste time in flipping pages. Organised way.How much time did it take every day? 1.5 hours at max. Also, I had one notebook for Prelims exclusively. That would have only those points which are Prelims worthy only. Most of the Environment News went in that.At times, I may to copy-paste content in both Prelims exclusive notes as well as other Notebooks. But it would less than half a minute. For me, this method passed all the tests: Innovation, Efficiency and Usefulness.RSTV (Rajya Sabha TV on YouTube) - quality discussions that open up one's mind to different dimensionsMonthly Magazines (Vision IAS)- as a distant secondary source for the sake of completion.Mains Static: MediumGeography (Coaching Notes of KSG, 4 NCERTs of 11th-12th, GC Leong, Internet Digging to understand some static topics like Jet Stream, El Nino, etc., Map Study, Mrunal’s notes on location of resources, PMFias notes on various Mains oriented topics)Economics (Coaching Notes of KSG, Mrunal’s notes, Sriram’s notes,Economic Survey and Budget, Livemint sometimes)Art and Culture (same as Prelims. Not much focus in Mains)Primarily India’s Struggle for independence by B.Chandra coupled with Spectrum for Modern HistoryWorld History (Normal and Lowe and Old NCERT)Post Independence history (B. Chandra’s India Since Independence - helpful in telling the topics but not thoroughly read)Society - Primarily Current Affairs and collection of Statistics on women, child, youth, old age, tribals, etc. Topics like regionalism and communalism were mostly commensensical and always remained in News. So, didn’t bother studying it from a book. My notes became by Bible.Laxmikanth for Polity coupled with Bare Act of Constitution for referenceGovernance - not very organised study. Just read the laws like RTI, Citizen Charter, schemes etc.International Relations - I had keen interest in this anyway. Read books like Does Elephant Dance, Choices, India’s Foreign Policy by VP Dutt, I read from current materialSecurityCurrent AffairsEditorials by people like MK Narayana, Shyam Saran, C. Uday Bhaskar, etc.Made notes from Model Answers of a sectional test of VisionIAS that covered almost all topics of Security (though I do not suggest this anymore)Science - only Current AffairsEnvironment (focused on Laws and recent events. Not worth much)EthicsBase material from a book published by Arihant's (Yellow Book) for theory part. There was no other option at that point but I don't think it's such a great book. Now you've better options like Lukmaan IAS notes, Orient IAS notes, etc.I prepared a list of definitions based on the syllabus. Tried to take them from Govt sources and reports. How I did that? I googled the term with government report as suffix. Something showed up. Thus, this was a creative exercise with no set pattern. Try this yourself.I gathered examples for the syllabus from Newspapers. Didn't quite write them at one place but use them in Answers practice so that they remain in my memory.I drew diagrams for topics like : Attitude and Aptitude, Emotional Intelligence (Standard diagrams which you'll find by googling.)For case studies, I used Vision IAS tests. Just to see if I'm able to think if all the options and solutions.I wrote a few tests with Vision (not exclusively but complete GS Test Series). Though not satisfied by their shoddy checking, I focused on completion of paper with using examples and case studies. I made sure that time wouldn't surprise me. I should be able to finish the paper with 2 minutes remaining. (Remember: All world records are broken first in practice, then on field)I also used many Indian Philosophy examples like Kautilya's theory on corruption, Gita's lessons, Vivekananda's quotes, Indian Civilisation, etc. Many of these are available are Values in Administration document by DOPT and UNDP. I used them liberally even in case studies.MAINS DYNAMIC: CHALLENGINGSame as Prelims Dynamic as described above.A word about Test Series: Didn’t find paid test series for Prelims much useful. Even for Mains, it helps in simulating Exam-like conditions as evaluation is sub-par. Thus, I recommend Full Length Mains Tests only.Apart from Studying part of it, a 21-year old has to think about whether she will make it, whether she made the right choice, and what if she didn’t go through? Not even Masters. Didn’t know anyone who has cleared. How do I even know if I’m going in the correct direction. To tide over all the insecurities, I resorted to the following:1. Unplugged all social media: even now, I don't have all of them. Within no time, I learned to live without them more comfortably.2. Switched my Smartphone for an ancient looking phone with basic features to eliminate possibility of backsliding. Smartphone returned to life much later.3. Focus more on laptop for digital prep which doesn't pop notifications all the time to disturb. Tablet was also used for the same reason.4. Remind myself often that the timing of life is important and not the time itself. If I let go off this train of learning now, the goal may never be achieved. But all the “fun” of others can be had later. There is no age bar on going to Goa afterall!5. Replace the need of using social media that shows this “fun” with something else. YouTube was my refuge. I can't tell how many Friends videos I watched there as it's not possible for anyone to just study and do nothing else!6. It may be corny but I did hear a lot of motivational songs in Hindi coz mother tongue has no parallel when it comes to emotional attachments! Blasting them off in my ears was sufficient to bring myself back from any daydreams!7. If you really think about it, fun is pretty ephemeral as grass looks greener on the other side. I trained myself to think on those lines and also what I never had in the first place can never be missed, right? I never felt envious after that! With high motivation and after a lot of hours topped by an Amazing Luck, I found myself on the other side of the story. So that’s all I did! If you reached till here, you have already got one trait required for this exam: PATIENCE! Thus, I wish you all the success in the world! :)
