PDF Editor FAQ

Can you look up a license plate in California?

The websites listed here are called third party information providers. These websites pull records from DMV, court, corrections, and vital statisticsdatabases. This saves you from doing multiple Internet searches on your own and from driving around town to collect the information.Since all of this information is public record and because of the Freedom of Information Act, you have every right to request this information on anyone you choose. Best of all, records are provided from across the nation. Can someone report another party with just a license plate number?Yes.And they can find out who you are with your plate number as their only information. With a license plate as that only means of identification, there are two venues in which to “report” an accident.Police Report:A report to the policy would generally be received by the local authorities if the accident was a hit-and-run with significant damageBased on the details of the question, I doubt that the other operator would waste their time or police resources with a report.Insurance Company Claim/Report:The other party could “report” the accident to their insurance company, but would do so under their Collision coverage which is always subject to a deductible.Because of the deductible, unless the damage is significant, there is little incentive for the other party to report this to their insurance company.Since the other party is only identified by a license plate, it is likely that the insurance company would also require that a report be made to the local authorities.Based on the question details, it decreases the chance of a claim report. In a genuine hit-and-run situation a license plate is valuable information and given the help of law enforcement, will lead to the identification of the vehicle’s registrant and owner. A police report obviously assists an insurance company in pursuit of claim settlement.Additional Info… Do-it-yourself License Plate Information Search:Docu-search claims to provide their customers with information on a vehicle registrant and owner from a license plate number for a one time fee. For more information you can check out Docu-search here. Can someone report you for hitting their car if they only have your license plate number? Yes. Is it likely given the details of this question? No.However, if the accident involved significant damage and/or a hit-and-run, the holder of a license plate number would have all the information they need to make either a police or insurance claim report. If you live in a state where no part of the registration fee is deductible, so you threw away all your renewal forms, you don’t have the car and can’t check the glove box for your registration, don’t have the title because you have a loan and the bank has it, and your state issues license plates after you buy a car so it’s not on the paperwork, you can check with your state’s motor vehicle department. Automobiles were the future, many knew, and despite their annoying noise, terrifying speed, and frequent breakdowns there was a push to document them for legal purposes. Several European countries had required plates since around 1893.In 1901 New York began to require that vehicle owners display their initials on the back of their automobiles but switched to numbered plates when too many people had the same initials. Massachusetts was the first state to issue license plates in 1903. Plates weren't made in standard sizes or shapes until 1957. One of the benefits of states standardizing vehicle registration was to remove the layers of often confusing and contradictory regulations applied by each local jurisdiction that roads crossed. Once vehicle registrations were handled by states, road regulations in general also became standard including speed limits, signage, and rules for drivers. All states now require license plates, but regulations vary about whether plates must be on the front and rear bumpers as well as registration sticker requirements. All autos in the United States have an additional identifying serial number known as the VIN or Vehicle Identification Number which is inscribed in the frame and often visible in a corner of the windshield.Vehicle DocumentationVIN numbers stay with a car forever, regardless of ownership or registration status. VIN numbers allow some services to track the sales of vehicles across state lines, and may include documentation if the auto has been wrecked or ruined in a flood. License plates are temporary identifiers that change when ownership of a vehicle is transferred. A registration sticker, sometimes applied to a corner of the license plate and sometimes attached to the car's windshield, depending on the state where it is registered, shows if the car meets current standards for licensing and insurance in that state. When police check a vehicle's status, they are able to tap into a database of information that shows whether the license plate belongs to the particular vehicle, whether the driver's insurance is up to date, and whether the registration is valid. Police may also be able to discern if a vehicle has been stolen because VIN numbers are usually circulated to identify stolen cars. Of course police are also able to check on the driver's record, to see whether he has any outstanding warrants for other offenses or might be a habitual offender behind the wheel, all clues to his current behavior.License Plate ResearchIt is easier to research a driver's history than it is to look up a vehicle's owner using a license plate number. While driving history records are quasi-public and may be requested if one can supply the driver's name, birthdate and a legitimate reason for the request, license plates can only be traced by police or other law enforcement officials in most states. The Driver's Privacy Protection Act of 1994 is a Federal law that was passed to prevent people from tracking down and harassing those who disagreed with them politically. This law prevents most people from researching the owner of a vehicle using a license plate number in most instances but there are many exceptions. Insurance companies, private investigators, and tow companies may have access to reverse license plate research tools, according to the law. Private toll collectors, government agencies, courts, and vehicle manufacturers that need to communicate recall notices are all excepted from the law as well.If you're concerned about a driving incident and have a license plate number of a drunk driver, a hit-and-run driver, or other dangerous situation it's often possible to pass license plate information along to police for their investigation. It’s very interesting to me that the scammers have downvoted this and other similar answers, in an effort to suppress the real state and make their scams easier to sell to the public.CoolGet your first report now!Good Question! Does wage theft happen a lot?

Yes. A lot. In many forms. There are the employers who tell their employees they are going to be “taken off the clock” for some time. There are there are the employers who insist their employees show up early to “get ready to work” or clock out and do paperwork. There are the employers who say they don’t pay drive time. And the ones who sell their employees equipment or uniforms and deduct it out of their pay. And the ones who lose money on a job and ask the employers to take less than agreed on another job to make up for their bad bid. There are employers who insist on not paying overtime, the employers who deduct money because the employee broke something or made some other mistake, and the employer who gets mad because the employee only worked a day or two or a week and then quit and they do not want to pay them at all so they just hold their wages. Then there are the employers who just shave the hours on the time cards and think the employees are too stupid to notice, which often they are. There was my “working interview” lawsuit against Blondies Bistro in Grants Pass, Oregon I wrote about in another Quora answer. My case against the dentist who paid a babysitter $3/hour to watch her kid at her dentist office I wrote about in my Quora answer about a lawyer who thought he was “too good but really wasn’t.” (One of my more popular Quoranswers) The dentist’s bookkeeper in that case testified at the hearing against my client and then months later hired me to sue the dentist. The same happened when I sued TNS Intersearch for not paying final paychecks on time. My third suit was for the office manager who testified against my first couple clients.I once sued a restaurant who would go through the waitresses’ tickets and take wages off if they didn’t charge the right amount for a particular item. There was my carnival company case at the Lane County Fair where the company comes every year and hires locals for the carnival games and leaves without paying them. There was the Fund For Public Interest Research Group cases - I think I sued them three times in the 1990s or early 2000s for their failure to pay minimum wage to the people went go door to door getting donations for Sierra Club, Oregon Natural Resources Council, and the Human Rights Campaign. I sued a manufactured home company several times for its sales people. They worked 10 and 12 hour shifts and got draw checks that were deducted from the commission on any home they sold, if they ever sold one. Most worked a week or two and then quit. The draw checks were for 40 hour weeks at 8 hours a day. The company would post weekly schedules but did not have time cards, and they’d get rid of the schedule at the end of the week, so I had my first client talk to someone who still worked there to photocopy the schedules (pre cell phone days) and I got a collection of the schedules, so as people quit or got fired they’d come hire me and I’d already have exhibits for their suit. I sued Habitat for Humanity once, and a local Baptist Church. And, like most wage claim lawyers, I’ve sued Walmart before. I sued Morgan Stanley DW three times, twice for not paying stock brokers their commissions, the third I don’t remember the issue. I once sued a contractor in Corvallis, Oregon who sent a crew to California every week and didn’t pay the driver of the rig for the drive time. He also docked the whole crew an hour’s pay one pay period when he heard they went to the bowling alley by the motel one night after work and drank beer. He did that because he was a fine Christian business man who considered it part of his service to God to provide jobs to men and that drinking beer was bad for them and lowered their productivity. He paid such low wages that he only attracted people who no cars or licenses to get to a job site for another builder, and some of them had suspensions for drinking and driving, so they should not be drinking when off the clock. Illegal deductions are my bread and butter. Taking money out for broken items or lost items, charging fees when the employee’s wages are garnished. Or taking money out of the garnished wages but not paying it to the garnishor. A lot of my wage theft cases are Prevailing Wage cases. A contractor will get a prevailing wage job with a government agency and want to pay their employees the wage they always get, so they lie on their certified payroll statements and say they paid them the right wage. Or they lie about the job the employee did. I had a big case for a woman who did cement mason work and her boss paid her laborer wages. It added up to $50,000 or so. I just wrapped up a prevailing wage case against a contractor from Glide, Oregon who failed to pay the right wages for work on the tunnel by Multnomah Falls that was damaged by the fire in 2017.When I was a tree planter, I was working on a Forest Service contract in Idaho and the government inspector told me about a tree planting contractor who had a crew of “Mexicans” (as people in the West call anyone who speaks Spanish on forest work crews regardless of what country they are from) in a remote area of Idaho and the INS (Immigration and Naturalization service) raided his camp at the end of the job. I asked him who would have called INS, and he said it was probably the contractor. If the workers got deported he probably would not have to pay them. And I once consulted with a couple men who claimed they lived in a back room at a restaurant in South Eugene for about 6 months and worked for the restaurant but only got food, no money. So they were slaves. They could not speak English and could barely speak Spanish. I assume they were Mayan or something like that. They had been referred by Eugene’s Centro Latinamericano. I offered to work for them, I gave them a letter in english to take back to the Centro to have translated, but they never called. They asked for help using the elevator when they left, so I walked them out and showed them how to push the down button, then, when it arrived, to push the button for the first floor. I do not know how I would gotten them to sign an agreement if they had hired me, or whether they would have been deported while I represented them. There’s employers who try to claim their employees are independent contractors. They do it to get around paying worker’s compensation and matching FICA and doing paperwork on taxes and such, but they often also violate minimum wage and overtime.
