Click on an image to unblur it.Junaid Hafeez is a Pakistani lecturer who is recently awarded death sentence on account of blasphemy charges.Born into Saraiki speaking family in Rajanpur, Junaid studied in King Edward Medical University in Lahore. He was the gold medalist in pre-medical studies in the Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education in the Dera Ghazi Division.Junaid was keen on English literature, therefore, he left pre-medical studies in 2006 and took admission in Bahauddin Zakariya University, Multan. He went to the USA and completed his masters in American Literature, Photography, and theatre. He joined BZU as a visiting lecturer. Hafeez's views towards Pakistani society and social values were bit different therefore he came under attack + criticism by Islamist political parties Jamat e Islam and Tehrik-tahafaz-e-Namoos-e-risalat in the university campus.Accusations:Hafeez was arrested on March 13, 2013, in Multan. He was held at Sahiwal Jail on the charge of violating section 295-C of the Pakistan Penal Code, the blasphemy law that provides for a death sentence for anyone who in any way "defiles" the name of Muhammad. Blasphemy laws in Pakistan are frequently used to target individuals to settle personal vendettas and to target religious minorities (such as Christians, Ahmadis, and atheists) and scholars. Hafeez's father, Hafeez-ul Naseer, has attributed his arrest to the Islamists' opposition to his son's liberal views, and their desire to get one of their own members an open lecturer position. Hafeez has been held in solitary confinement since June 2014, after being repeatedly attacked by other prisoners.Since 2018 his conditions have been reported to have become more extreme, and Hafeez's physical and mental health has declined. Hafeez was accused of making derogatory comments about Muhammad on Facebook, and of hosting the British-Pakistani novelist Qaisra Shahraz. He was accused of using the account Mulla Munnafiq to comment about Muhammad's wives in the closed group "So-Called Liberals of Pakistan." The police claimed to have gathered 1200 pages of material that incriminates him from his computer as well as a book called "Progressive Muslims" that he had received.I’m not sure if Junaid did blasphemy as I have not gone through that blasphemous content he is being accused of. But its more important to know whether he was given a fair chance of his trial?Junaid in the first instance struggled to find a lawyer in his defense. In 2013 his first lawyer Mudassar left the case due to life threats and harassments. Attorney Rashid Rahman took the case and faced the same situation. At one of the hearing on 3 April 2014 at Multan Central Jail, Rashid confessed in the courtroom that he may not stay alive till the next hearing. On 7 May 2014 (hardly after a month), he was gunned down by unknown armed people in his office. Junaid is representing by Shahbaz Gurmani since Dec 2014 and he is also facing death threats.On the other hand, 7 out of 8 judges who were hearing the case were being transferred to other courts.If you look at these developments, you can easily assume that Junaid as well as his lawyers, the family are going through tremendous pressure, life threats, and harassment. He is awarded the death sentence in a civil court of Multan.Blasphemy is one of the most sensitive issue in Pakistan where a person may lose his life in case of saying anything against popular religious sentiments. Those who say that blasphemy law is used primarily against non-Muslims, I want to let those people know that From 1967 to 2014, most of these cases were reported in Punjab. I was stationed at Edwards Air Force Base when Chuck Yeager was there on the anniversary of his breaking the sound barrier. He took a jet up and re-enacted breaking it again in 1996 or 1997. He was in the Medical Group where I worked and I don’t know if he was racist, so much as it was very apparent that he had a problem with women in the Air Force by his demeaning comments to us even suggesting that we should not be serving our country, but preferably cutting his hair instead. All of these gender biased comments were preceded with “Honey”, “Darling” or “Sweetheart”. An old man with old way of thinking. I did hear the sound barrier being broken and that in itself was pretty cool.

My name is written on the merit board of the high school that I attended. The person I beat to claim the top spot went on to attend Pakistan’s most prestigious medical school here in Lahore; you may have heard of it: Kind Edward Medical College.I secured the top spot in our school in an exam that used to be held exclusively for the top ten students of the whole school; only children belonging in the top group used to appear in that exam. The questions used to be extra tough with no room for error.
