How does one get in contact with recruiters on LinkedIn?

Last week, I made a simple two line post on LinkedIn telling my network that I was hiring PMs for my team at Microsoft. Since then, I have received well over 500 DMs in response. A large majority of them looked something like this:“Hi Rohan,I am XYZ. I work/study at ABC. I want to apply for the role. Here’s my resume. I will be happy to get onto a call to discuss further. When can you let me know the next steps?”Many of you must be wondering what is wrong with such a message right? Do you see it yet? Try reading it again. How about now? No? Okay, let me tell you.I’m going to let you guys in on a little secret. Pull out your notebook and write this down. Whenever you reach out to someone who is hiring on LinkedIn or DM someone for help on Quora or approach a mentor at your school/office or basically any scenario where you are asking something of someone, be sure to let them know what is in it for them. For example, I get dozens of requests a day from folks asking me to go look at their profiles and evaluate them. Why would I do that? What’s in it for me? It is not scalable for a hiring manager, a recruiter, a mentor, a guide, to go through every request he or she gets. Quality over quantity. Here’s an example of what a good DM on LinkedIn looks like:“Hi Rohan,Thank you for taking the time to connect with me. I am Vegeta, a second year MS student at Beerus university. Prior to grad school, I worked as a Sr. Software Engineer at Planet Kai. My projects during this time involved working on highly transactional cloud based services which taught me how to tradeoff scale and performance. I have also worked on project foo-bar that taught me Identity Management and Access control. I feel that this combination will add value to your M365 Core Security Team, which, as I understand from the white paper you published recently, works at the exciting intersection of core infra tech and massive cloud services at scale.I have also done two Product Management internships at Namek as well as worked on Customer Acquisition Strategies at a startup in India along with a couple of friends. These taught me how to understand and interpret customers and really translate their needs and pain points as users into business requirements. I also learned how to drive clarity from ambiguity; an important skill for any PM.I am very interested in the Product Management opportunity on your team at Microsoft. If your schedule permits, can you please help me understand a little more about the roles and responsibilities.”How to get in contact with recruiters on LinkedIn?Whenever you approach someone, always focus on what they stand to gain from the exchange. If you’re applying for a job, let the recruiter or hiring manager know how they will benefit by considering you as a candidate. If you’re requesting someone to be your mentor, tell them what they stand to gain from the time you’re asking them to invest. Applying to grad school, let them know what you’re bringing to the table that is of interest to them. Most people focus very heavily on articulating what they want from the transaction. A job applicant will often talk about why they feel they should get the job but rarely focus on what the job gains by them coming on board. A mentee will usually tell the potential mentor how they stand to benefit from his/her guidance but seldom highlight what’s in it for them.Every conversation, every transaction, every request should be approached like you would a relationship you care about. It can never flourish if it is a one way street. You need to nurture it right from the get go. Be clear on what the person in front of you has to gain in exchange for their time and see the doors start to open for you. Here’s a juicy dumpling I pigged out on in Shanghai… because… why not…Out of the 37K+ views and 500+ DMs, I ended up responding to 5. If I don’t see the value, I will not invest my time. It’s just that simple.p.s. This is also very useful as a PM skill. When you’re thinking about getting customers to use your product, always start with what is in it for them rather than why your product is so awesome. In case we haven’t met before, I’m Rohan Kamath.Thank you for reading. I hope I could help you learn today. :)

What was your TCS interview experience?

Yes, I had appeared in TCS interview for digital profile.TCS Digital NQT was held on 7th July,2019. After one week, the written test results were given and I was one of them who cleared it. They told that the selected candidates should attend the interview at TCS Synergy Park, gachibowli, Hyderabad. All the students from premium colleges of Andhra Pradesh attended the interview on 19 th July. Firstly, they alloted panels to us. I was the first person to be interviewed in my panel. So,I was feeling a bit nervous but I was very stubborn and controlled my tension and went to my panel room. It was quite a long interview. In my panel ,two interviewers were present. The first panelist asked me where are you from? I answered ,Iam from Vijayawada. Then ,he asked which college ,I told VR Siddhartha sir.Very soon,he asked me the eamcet rank. I told my rank (4000). Meanwhile, second panelist took my resume and was scanning it. He asked me to introduce myself. I told. The first panelist asked me about my projects and internships. Since I am a MICROSOFT WISE mentee,he asked me what is that and what I had done at Microsoft as WISE mentee. I told that we ( 3 members) had developed an application. Then ,he asked me what is that and scope of the project ? I had given a brief description about that project. Then,he asked which language and what kind of algorithm did you use to make future predictions (our project includes future predictions?I told we had used python and fbprophet algorithm . He asked me did you know python? I told, yes sir I Knew python . Then, there was a rapid fire round type of questions in python. It includes A-Z i.e from scratch to end. I answered almost all the answers correctly except 2–3 questions. He gave me some simple coding questions and asked me to write the code in python. I wrote,it seemed that he was satisfied with my answers. Next, second panelist asked me why only python?? I answered. He replied,ok and tell the advantages of python over java ? Which is more preferable? I answered. Then he asked me you have mentioned C,java and python in your resume,In which language do you more comfortable with?? I told that I am comfortable with all the three languages. He then replied with a big smile on his face ,Ohh and went on asking questions in C,java and some programming questions . I answered them in a very confident way. He tried to confuse me by asking questions like Is it?? Are you sure with your answer?? He asked me many times whenever I had given my answer and I was confident with my answers. Meantime, first panelist was looking at the application in the computer. He asked me to write the JDBC program ,I tried my level best but I am unable to write the complete program ,I told sorry sir,I am not getting it right now. He smiled. The first panelist asking him to end the interview but second one was asking questions continuously. He again asked me about Hashset in java and gave me a question, asked to write the code. I had written the code. He again asked me some questions about programming concepts and told me to answer yes or no but don't give any explanation. While I am answering ,he again asked me are you sure with your answer. I prepared my mind whatever I answer just stand to my answer no matter the answer is correct or wrong. Mostly, they ask these kind of questions to check confident in the person. Since I had mentioned SQL in my resume,he asked to write the queries to the given questions. The first panelist interrupted and asked how did I manage the database in my project. I answered. It looks like he was satisfied with my answer. Then, second panelist asked me about procedures, functions, cursors . I answered almost all of them except some questions related to cursors. The first panelist again asked another one to end the interview. But he wasn't convinced, started asking questions about cloud computing,my favorite subjects , digital technologies etc. Finally,he asked me what do you mean by word digital ?? I said various digital technologies currently evolving and explain them, given a small definition but not a dictionary definition. He replied ,no I want a one word answer. At that particular point of time, I didn't get any correct answer. After thinking for a minute,I told smart sir. He then asked what do you mean by smart?? I answered if anything happened without any human intervention. He asked me tell me an example. I answered by taking the example of home automation applications and told we can operate them even we are at office. They both laughed and told thank you Pooja, the information about HR round will give you soon. After 2 minutes,I am called for the HR interview . The HR asked to introduce myself which I had not mentioned in my resume, final year project,my role in the project, hobbies, certifications and some basic HR questions like why TCS?? Background check up, Service agreement, reallocation, shift allowance etc. She told me that the results will be given to the college. Finally the interview was cleared by me and got placed.

What do I write in a mentor application?

I would do some searches to see what questions are being asked in other mentor program applications. When I have responded to mentor application forms I typically answer the questions that are being asked. You need to be truthful and you need to demonstrate a commitment to the program.Remember that the person you are submitting the application to is taking the data that you have provided and using it to match you with a mentee. The matching is critical especially if being done manually versus using a mentoring software program. In any event you would want to answer all the questions as truthfully as possible.
