PDF Editor FAQ

What are the best investments you’ve made?

Compound interest is the greatest force in the universe, so I’m going to focus on longer-term investments both in yourself and in your bank account.Get to a healthy weight and body composition (muscle vs fat) for your height and then eat to maintain. You don’t have to look like Scooby, but your body is the only one you have in this life and investing in your physical health has well-researched and proven positive effects on your happiness, personal and business relationships, life span, and more.As long as you are physically able to do so, lift weights or run 3-or-more times per week for at least 30 minutes. Again, check out Scooby above if you’ve never been “into that stuff”. If I were 20 again I’d lift 7 days a week as an over-investment in this area - the benefits are that powerful. As long as you are physically able to do so, sit up straight, shoulders back. See any older folks at work or in your family who are permanently hunched over? You’ll thank me later. Search for “how to sit up straight” or “proper posture” online for images, videos, etc.Provided you can do so without foregoing the basic needs of food, water, clothing, and shelter:Chop 10% of all income right off the top and put it into a 401k with low fees. Plan to leave it alone until retirement (whether that’s 30, 40, 50, 65, whatever, just leave it alone). Remember to use the 10% rule - so as your income grows your investment grows.Chop another 10% of all income right off the top and throw it into a diversified investment portfolio. Simple approaches available right now are available through companies like Wealthfront or Betterment - just set up auto-deposits and take advantage of their expertise and algorithms. And remember the 10% rule again. As this fund grows consider shifting some of the gains off to commercial “investment-grade” real estate: rental properties, a RV park, a parking lot, a strip mall, etc. and really putting the money to work in other ways.Keep an “emergency fund” that will cover the basic needs for 6 months. Don’t touch it unless absolutely necessary (unemployment, illness, etc), and then replenish it as soon as you’re able. If and when the costs for basic needs grow, the emergency fund should grow to always be able to cover 6 months worth of time.As a core principle, avoid debt. Get a great “rewards” credit card like Chase Amazon (if you use Amazon a lot) or one of the airline cards (if you fly a lot), but pay off the full balance each month. If you can’t, then unless you’re bootstrapping a startup you are overspending (and even then, you’re probably overspending).Enjoy life and be social, but don’t drink your income. A case of wine for home is significantly cheaper than the same wine at a night out. In addition you can slowly build a wonderful collection of wines that are inexpensive today and will taste that much better in your 30s or 40s (and some will age longer), when drank with your future family and/or the good friends you make over the years ahead.Read for 30 minutes a day or more - if you prefer to listen then consider Audible instead. Read books written by titans of industry and by prisoners of war. Learn from great philosophers across time. Specifically read either Seneca or Epictetus, or both: you don’t have to buy into Stoicism but their writings have been considered highly-applicable to the real world across centuries by some of the most accomplished humans through history and they are timeless works for good reason.Simplify your food and clothing options. Figure out some standard healthful meals, ones that are inexpensive while still nutritious and that you can eat repeatedly throughout the week, and do so. Make a wardrobe and stick with it. Slacks with basic button-downs, jeans with t-shirts, the options largely depend on your personal and professional needs but whatever you do keep it basic. You’re doing this for three reasons:Consistency in the cost of basic needs.Frees up decision-making power, which you can now use on more important things. Greater decision-making capacity is an investment in your personal and professional future.Reducing or eliminating these simple choices from your life means less stress. Less stress is an investment in both your mental and physical health.Learn the art of goal setting and execution and apply it everywhere. See “How Google sets goals: OKRs – GV Library”.In summary:Take care of your body through nutrition and exercise.Sit up straight!Dedicate a portion of your income to each of a 401k, a diversified investment portfolio that can grow into larger investments in the future, and an emergency fund.Avoid debt but don’t make the mistake of thinking it’s universally bad.Don’t drink your income.Read great non-fiction written across history.Eliminate needless choice in the simple things.Learn how to make goals and execute on your plans.

Why do some homeless people prefer cash over food when offered?

Why do some homeless people NEED cash over food when offered? As I sit reading these comments I am absolutely overwhelmed and in tears. A lot of this was why I didn’t ask or panhandle. I understood very well that people everywhere are struggling that nearly 50% of the population was at, below or just barely above the poverty line and had children and other family members to take care of. People are often thoughtless and cruel. I was homeless for about 6 years. Most of that I was lucky to get a meal a day if that. If I was given food, which is rare if you're not actively begging, I didn’t turn it down, I gave it to someone else who needed it if I just ate or couldn’t eat it.Homeless people don’t have: fridges, stoves or pantries. They have to carry everything.Money is lighter. Some who have cars do have coolers or small camping stoves: in order to keep a few perishables and to cook soup in a can, heat coffee and get warm periodically only when needed the most and short spurts at a time to conserve fuel.Personal Hygiene: Showers, washing clothes, laundry soap, soap, shampoo, deodorant, toothbrushes, nail clippers, haircutsTransportation: Purchase a Decent Bike, Bus fare or if disabled a taxi from time to time.Storage: purchasing a wheeled luggage bag, storage fees for belongings if they actually have some left and are trying to keep it until they find housing, storage lockers rental.Money Meets those Needs. In winter money allows a homeless person to get out of the cold and legally hang out in a fast food joint to warm up. They usually don’t let you stay long unless you make a considerable purchase though that’s no guarantee. They may have to jump from one restaurant to another trying to keep warm from inclement weather all day every single day…Money Meets that Need Rarely…Even for a coffee and a dollar sandwich $2–3 min. per person, per restaurant. So for a couple that is $4–6 per visit. When you regularly purchase the bare minimum you are automatically stereo-typed MOST of the time and encouraged to leave as soon as possible. They may need help with a motel for all kinds of reasons:A couple doesn’t want to be at separate shelters and alone.maybe one spouse is disabled and needs more care than a shelter can offer, perhaps *GASP* a married couple would like to have sex once in awhile. They are human, or should homeless couples also refrain from sex ever again even when they are married?Maybe they have:allergiesa medical conditionORreligious beliefs that limit their food choices.Health Care:Prescription drugs, Aspirin, Midol, Cough Drops, Other over the counter medicinesVITAMINS to help maintain health despite improper nutrition.GAS for vehicle IF they have one.A vehicle that must be moved all day long most of the time from one parking lot or parking space to another in order to avoid tickets, cop hassles, drama, or worse, getting impounded, leaving no shelter from elements at all and loss of the few items you own. Also to get to an actual campground OR an otherwise expectable area.Fines for simply being homeless.Fees for filling out housing applications.Work clothes/Clothes/Well Insulated Winter Clothes/Winter Boots/Good ShoesNecessary to attempt to obtain a Job. Not run around naked or in rags. Too Keep Warmer since most likely you will be in the enclement weather a lot. Decent Footwear for warmth, transportation, and durability as they walk nearly ever where every day that takes a toll on shoes.Money Helps Meet those Needs.TWO very essential Items:Tampons & Toilet paper/Baby Wipes - keeps you much cleaner and less aromatic if you will -between showers & allows sponge bath of sorts if needed.Use of the FACILITIES:Money to keep local convenience store or other business one may frequent HAPPY so they’ll allow you use of a restroom.Money Helps Meet those Needs.Getting Outta DODGE:Bus fare to leave town and try to find some place less violent or somewhere with more housing and employment options.Funds for other transportation sources to do this like fixing a car. There are a lot of things they need besides food. Food is generally appreciated and needed. However, just like MOST of YOU they aren’t too keen on eating food or candy from strangers. Self-explanatory I think? And did you know: Cigarettes curb hunger (as does CoFFee). Helps cope with stress and calm you down in stressful situations. For many it is pleasurable and one of the FEW they experience. Typically they are VERY FRUGAL in this department. Cigarettes can also help KEEP the PEACE and a way some try to help each other out on occasion. Most homeless buy cheap bags of tobacco and/or roll them. They have been known to smoke snipes and a cigarette is NEVER wasted. Ashtrays are frequently locked to prevent the theft of all those almost not smoked cigarettes with two drags off them. Supposedly a health issue….it’s mainly GREED folks they make money off the homeless smokers too!!~! Can’t LOSE that stream of cash flow. Gotta love how much smokers are targeted for TAX REVENUES in the extreme but everyone wants to complain tell them to quit while at the same time making a profit. Contradictory. Very.WHY do homeless people have to be PERFECT SAINTS?Are ANY of YOU perfect?Cast the first stone if you are. They weren’t perfect before becoming homeless most likely. I’m taking a wild guess they weren’t Mother Teresa.I’ve been there. Didn’t beg. Didn’t drink. Went hungry a lot. Froze nearly all the time or had no refuge from heat. I’ve had to survive pneumonia on the streets after being resuscitated three times and pushed back out on the streets. Hospital apparently didn’t care I had just died three TIMES in less than a half hour and had no problem discharging me into a rainstorm, raging fever with nowhere to go. WOW, really? I even asked the man who resuscitated me…WHY? Just let me die. I meant it. Ironically, when I was homed hospitals often tried to persuade me to be hospitalized over far less to keep an eye on me through the night which I of course declined as it was very unnecessary and minor.I’ve been raped on the streets. Had everything stolen a number of times. Constantly stressed out with my life in near constant jeopardy most of the time. Hungry, disabled, having to move constantly despite being exhausted from walking-ish ump-teen miles a day because someone might be offended to see a homeless person. Who cares if you can barely walk and blisters on your feet - better move - even if you’re at a park doing nothing wrong - we don’t want to offend anyone. And that’s just skimming the surface, sweetheart. I could go on but I digress…To those who shared:Thank you for caring, sharing and trying to make a difference!!~! The world needs more people like you all! There is ANOTHER SIDE to the story. There are REAL people out there just trying to survive the best they can and have as much normalcy as possible. Not everyone is a druggie or alcoholic.Just like any other aspect of society. You have the good apples and the bad. There are other many other acceptable and reasonable things people need besides food. Many of those who are buying these things are trying to survive without being too much of a burden and still having some freedom or are determined to get back up on there feet. The intent here isn’t to compel you to give money either. Just Informative. If you want to help or already do but just don’t assist in the money department that is fine. That is your choice. You have Freewill. I respect that. Perhaps this can offer some ideas on how to help if you choose to.Edit: Altered for easier reading though I did make other alterations I felt were appropriate to make.
