PDF Editor FAQ

How do you feel like studying when you're in a very busy household?

I have been in that exact situation…to make matters worse, I was dependent on my brother for transportation (we went to the same engineering school) , so we also had a long commute home every day.By the time I got home, in that small house in Beaconsfield, Quebec, the Tv was on and the vibe was all wrong for studying. My grades started to deteriorate and I nearly got expelled. It was the Wake-Up Call I needed. Either change my Circumstances or Fail. But how? One year (out of the 4year program) had gone by and I got a well-paid summer job up North in James Bay. I had enough Mula now to change course.I took the hard decision to move. I was 18 at the time. I rented a room facing the campus with an old lady that rented the room. At last, I could truly enjoy Campus Life and have my own schedule. I put myself on the waitlist for a room at the Campus Residence.Sometimes, it takes some effort to get out of a bad situation. We can spend all our energy being angry or we can meditate, introspect, channel the Universe and figure some way out of this. We always have options. Sometimes, we are stubborn and want to convince ourselves that we don't have a choice. We always have a choice. Get rid of your limiting beliefs…beliefs like ‘’I’m too stupid, I'm too old..I'm too fat..i’M to this...I can't, I won't ….etc..I read somewhere..We need to act free of corruption, deception, envy, bitterness or greed...that is wisdom....a Purity of Intent. Stand in your Integrity without Masks, without Hypocrisy.Long story short. After this, I made lots of friends. My Social life improved. I got out of the Social Isolation of being stuck in the Burbs…without a car and dependent on trains or a ride from my brother on his schedule. I resolved to never subject my kids to that.I teamed up with an ugly but very smart girl that became my constant companion. I was shy but I loved her steadfast disciplined approach in studying. She had a positive influence on me. I was kind of timid then, actually still am.I also teamed up with a bunch of very smart Haitians, Half and Half ..but hard working and I joined their Clan. Engineering was tough. In the first 18 months, it was mostly Trigonometry, Chemistry, Physics…real hard stuff that I never used after..but hey, they failed 40% of the people with that Tronc Commun. One summer, I took a Summer Course to make up for a failed Fluid Mechanics course at McGill. None of that theoretical nonsense. It was more of a Handbook Approach, Schaum’s books, like Fluid Mechanics for Nerds..it was well explained, easy and fun with none of that theoretical bullshit. I realized then that I was more of an Anglophile-American in Approach. I love their tinkering, empirical approach to things. They would design reinforced concrete Rebar using Developed Formula and Tables, instead of long theoretical equations (the French approach to Engineering..ideal for Graduate studies). So with our gang of Haitians, at the end of the day, we would proceed down the Hill (the School -Ecole Polytechnique dits on a mountaintop overlooking Outremont) to the Cafeteria, a pleasant ten-minute walk down-hill, then go eat together at the Cafeteria for supper, then climb back up that hill , go into the School, find an empty classroom and each of us, use the Blackboard to solve last year’s Exam Questions. Somehow, these guys had gotten access to 5 years of Exam Questions and similar questions always came up, with barely the numbers changing…so that approach really worked and I went from having Ds and Cs to As and Bs…quite the turnaround.Still by the time I graduated, my average was around B..still not enough to get into a Masters Program. I got a job at Hydro Quebec designing transmission lines and at night, I took 2 courses at McGill (I love their Campus in Downtown Montreal)..I met lots of interesting people taking courses for a Diploma in Management (the equivalent of the first year of MBA). After a year of courses, (so 2 years at Night School) I kind of understood the Mindset of Management, having taken 10 courses (Basic Management statistics, Marketing I, Finance I, Behavioral Science I..etc), I took the GMAT Exam..and I was exempted from the TOEFL (proficiency in English ) given my track record of 10 courses in the English language successfully completed. I had learned English in my Youth while playing Baseball with an American kid from Baltimore, a real tough kid with abusive parents…and a Hungarian whose Dad was a Diplomat at the Trade commission (my dad always said; he must be a Communist spy).Still, I learned English well reading Cartoons all afternoon (the Hulk, Spiderman, Batman, Wonderwoman, ..Marvel Comics) with one of my Stanislas classmates from adjacent Westmount (I lived at the top of Ridgewood, a dead-end street, bordering Westmount next to the famous St Joseph’s Oratory Church.I spent my summers also playing construction and we proudly donned the construction helmets that my Dad had brought home from Expo67 which he helped build as an Architect. We built tree houses, underground shelters..which all got infested with Ants or demolished at some point and we started again anew in a new tree, in a new, hidden location in the Woods of Westmount. When I came to Canada from Luxembourg at age 10, I spoke mostly German and a bit of French that my Cousin and GrandMa had taught me.After Expo had been opened and my Dad had built la Ronde, le Jardin des Etoiles (a theatre made of Concrete) and an assemblage -reconstitution of Norman Houses…he became manager of Habitat67, still partially unfinished and he had rendered a favour to the Coca Cola Company…I remember him showing me the Business Card of the Chairman of the Board of the Coca Cola Company. There were constant parties and events during Expo67 ..some real great parties..but my dad as GM of Habitat 67, had managed to unblock or help unblock a toilet at the eve of a Big Party in the Coca Cola Suite there. To show his Gratitude, the chairman had ordered a delivery of a crate of Coca Cola and Sprite every week by the Coke truck that supplied the grocery stores. My teammates on the Baseball team were quite happy. Still, since that time, I have shed my addiction to Coke because all that sugar gets to your teeth and your insides too …lolSo, I digressed again. IT’s the story of my life..lol. But, all in all, stay optimistic and you’ll meet lots of Angels on your Path that will help your journey. My View of the World is that Life Is Beautiful although there may be hardships at times. They help us forge our Character. The Movie is entitled ‘’Character’’…a Dutch Movie with English subtitles from 1997 that I first saw at the Montreal FilmFest……LOVE LIFE LOUD AND CLEAR
