A couple of years ago, I fell and fractured my foot.The fracture was small, and it should have healed in 8–9 weeks.It took 8 months. Indeed, for a couple of months, the fracture was getting worse.Because I am sort of a Type A person and wouldn’t stay off it. Sure, I had an orthopedic boot, a knee scooter, and a wheel chair. I had my bathtub fitted with a bench for showering. But I would cheat and put weight on my foot. And so it took months to heal.As we know, nature is like that.On March 6, there were 108K COVID-19 infections worldwide and 3.2K deaths.Twelve days later, it had nearly doubled to 200K infections worldwide.Now, six days after that, it has doubled again. Infections have quadrupled in 18 days, and deaths have grown fivefold, to 13K deaths.So, two weeks from now…business as usual? Um, probably not.I mean no disrespect to you and am not making fun of your question. I am pointing out the absurd over-optimism of some, particularly those with orange faces, in thinking of this.Now this whole thing is very instructive, because we have examples of excellent responses and absurdly bad responses to all this.South Korea stumbled right out of the gate as members of a fringe religious group insisted on meeting, and the virus spread.But South Korea ramped up their testing and contact tracing very quickly. There was a time when South Korea was testing 10K people a day, while the US had only tested 11K total.South Korea got it contained. They now have just 9K cases to our 52K cases. Drive-through testing is widely available.Singapore, a crowded city-state of just over 5 million, also attacked this aggressively early on, with testing and contact tracing. The result? Singapore has only 558 cases and two deaths. Indeed, I have read that most of their cases were brought in by international travelers, so Singapore has closed its borders, to contain it.By contrast, we have Italy, number 2 in the world, and the USA, now number 3.While the infection was rampant in China, it turns out that Italy was actually hosting some joint Italian-Chinese cultural festival in a major Italian city! Oops.Their business and political leaders downplayed the need for social distancing, at first.When they panicked and tried to close off Northern Italy, many Northerners got on the last trains out of the region and fled to Southern Italy, where they could spread the infection to others.Others, throughout the country, were slow to pick up on the need to stay home and willingly met friends at bars and restaurants. I think they were channeling their inner Devin Nunes.Italy’s excellent healthcare system has now been overwhelmed. When it comes to COVID-19, medical specialties have all but disappeared. Everyone, from urologists to dermatologists, is now a critical care doc treating COVID-19 patients. There are only so many critical care beds and so many ventilators. They are now getting to the part where doctors have to decide which patients to treat and which to give up on, as in wartime.I have read two or three articles that I considered reliable, saying that the US is about 10 days behind Italy in what is about to happen to us.And yes, I have also read two or three articles saying that if the US as a whole would just bite the bullet and just about everyone shelter in place, in a few weeks (not two, certainly, but several weeks), we could probably take the sting out of the hornet.I don’t mean by that, that the infection would just go away, but I understand these articles to mean that transmission would be severely hindered, the rate of spread would be significantly slowed, and our supply of critical care beds much less likely to go through an Italy-like experience.I think these articles are reliable and agree with their authors that such an outcome is likely if the majority of people would discipline themselves and do what they have to do.But this is America, where a large part of the population seems to subscribe to the theory “Ain’t nobody gonna tell me nothin’…’cause, ‘Murica.”And so, in my state, we have a Lieutenant Governor who said, last night, that he believed grandparents would be willing to die to keep our economy alive.
