In court, what was the most devastating cross-examination of a witness that you ever saw?

In my former life I was a legal secretary and junior exec that worked for a huge firm with some of the best but most ruthless lawyers and QC’s in the country. Our criminal department was huge and the senior criminal lawyer also the deputy coroner. We dealt with huge cases and prosecutions brought against NHS for medical negligence and whatnot and one particular barrister we used was a small chap from London named Percy who was this small, wiry haired eccentric and frightfully posh gent who by sheer luck I was fortunate to meet and learn more or less everything I know.Percy always referred to me as “girl” in both a friendly way and when angry as in “For fuck's sake girl don't come and tell me there's nothing in those files!!!” and “Oh thank you dear girl you are a darling”Back then all cases were paper based and he would have me sift through a stack of bundles looking for what he referred to as the slightest room to nitpick. He insisted everything we needed to win or lose a case was within the bundles of notes, case files and paperwork and the key was to go through every single sheet and make sure that everything written and recorded was backed up somewhere else.If someone wrote in a statement they had gone out for an early morning walk in the spring sunshine, backtrack and check the weather for that day to make sure it was in fact bright sunshine. Then cross reference it with other information such as what clothes they were wearing and every last bit of detail because in his words “Nobody is so far ahead of the game that they cover all tracks and leave nothing for the likes of us to find”He used to say that when you find one tiny little discrepancy, it's like finding a small loose thread on clothing. Where there is just the one thing, there's another and if you just gently pull it will lead to the whole thing unravelling and give us a successful case without doing much.Anyway after being taught the ways of the force pretty well, I was in crown court for a case brought after the death of a patient in a private hospital. Long and short the nurse called to give evidence was already being investigated for nursing notes that hadn't been completed properly and might have been fraudulently altered.A gent had died suddenly and in questionable circumstances during the night and the nurse hadn't signed off medication charts to show that she had given him his meds. She was desperately trying to convince the court that even though she'd forgotten to sign off the sheets, she had definitely been in and seen him alive and well at that time but that one tiny box she didn't sign cost her everything.Poor woman sobbed her heart out and I knew from the way she spoke, how desperately she spoke and the frustration in her voice she was telling the truth.Granted she had ballsed up by not signing the medication charts but I believed every word she said about going in to see the chap, give him meds and it not being something she'd overseen or failed to do and therefore allowed him to lay dead all night.Percy was such a bastard in that he said little, spoke very calmly and quietly but kept repeating “Well that's all well and good yet much as I want and hope to help you, there is absolutely nothing to suggest any proof in what you say. Furthermore your failure to complete medication records is a gross oversight and negligence for someone of your qualification and responsibility is that a fair statement?”He even shrugged his shoulders and raised his hands the way Judge Judy does when she's being really annoying in TV shows but his quiet, calm voice and saying so few words other than to ask for clarification of someone screwing up made him even more terrifying.During a break I said how I really believed what she was saying and felt like she genuinely forgot to fill out the charts and believed she had gone in and given his meds and did as she said”“Listen girl. Our job is not to determine who is telling the truth and award prizes for honesty. Our job is to win this case and that's exactly what we'll do for the lack of two fucking letters in a box”We won our case and she was struck off the nursing register all because of that one mistake.I learned from Percy and seeing first-hand how devastating it is when you don't keep good and proper records. It's still with me to this day and when I managed / trained care staff in nursing and residential / dementia homes I was so up on paperwork the girls warned new starters and students on placement never to get sloppy and skip out in this area -“When Charlotte comes in and starts randomly pulling files off the shelves and checking shit it's like Gordon Ramsay doing a kitchen strip out. It's brutal.I took that as a compliment and it still tickles me to have girls I used to manage turn white when I appear at the their workplace “Oh shit.. you're not here to do an inspection are you?”Seriously though the things that can make or destroy a person from paperwork is incredible. Such a small thing that has massive consequences and it amazes me how few people really understand that and think it’s just a pointless exercise they have to do for the sake of it.Whatever you have written, signed for and checked off happened.Whatever you haven’t written, signed for and checked off didn’t happen. It’s that simple and black / white in terms of the law.Don’t fall foul of the same thing or get too complacent, cocksure and confident.“Look at all this fuc… How much paper are you shoving in there? How much shit is in this file??LOOK. AT. THIS.LOOK!! LOOK!! LOOK!!!!”

What is the toughest school you went to while in the military?

I went to 3 schools. The first one wasn’t really a school, but rather a series of classes on Communicable diseases hosted by the CDC. It was mandatory for those working isolation wards. The Solders coming back from Vietnam were exposed to diseases that were uncommon in the US. Though not uncommon, a lot of them were coming back with Hepatitis A, B, and C. We had to be instructed on how to protect ourselves, other patients and the Community. The school wasn’t particularly difficult, but it wasn’t a walk in the park, either. We could either attend 3 hours a day twice a week or 6 hours a day once a week. It depended on our work schedules. The second one was highly recommended by my Commanding Officer for me to attend. Military Leadership School for Servicewomen That was 8 weeks. We were graded on a point system. Each student started out with 100 points. For every infraction, one point was taken away. Some of the infractions were:~~Being late or missing classes. The only exception was if the student was on sick call (felt sick and went to see a Doctor). You had to get a note from the Doctor stating you were late because you were being seen by a Doctor or missed classes because of illness and was confined to quarters. This note had to be hand carried to the CO of the school.~~Flunking any tests including unscheduled random tests. Any tests missed because of illness had to be made up. It was a different test from the one the class was given.~~Flunking any part of a personal inspection, room inspection and barracks inspection (gigs). One point for every infraction. This this went from the ridiculous to the sublime. We had personal inspection in the hallway every morning. The inspection team brought a measuring tape to make sure all uniform accouterments were exactly according to uniform regulations. One morning, they even brought a small bubble level to make sure the name tag and the ribbons were exactly level with each other. Fortunately, it was just a one time thing. They discovered that some of the women were so voluminous (shall we say “chesty’) that the level was nearly impossible to get an accurate reading. Each room housed two students. The rooms had an imaginary line down the middle marked with a small black dot on the wall near the ceiling. That’s so one student couldn’t be accidently blamed for an infraction of her room mate. Again, the tape measure. We had to make an open bed, which meant the blanket and top sheet had be folded down with a double fold. The white “cuff” had to be exactly 8″ wide and the top of the cuff had to be 16″ from the top to the upper edge of the mattress. Each student had an area in the barracks they were responsible for keeping clean. Example: Dayroom, kitchen, utility room, TV room (which was just a small room with an extra TV). These areas were rotated among the students weekly. This one was tricky for barracks inspection. Even though there were students assigned to keep these areas clean, it was the responsibility of all students to make sure the barracks was ready for inspection. If there were any infractions, everyone in the barracks got a gig, whether they used the rooms or not. This was to prevent a student from carelessly leaving a mess after the room was prepared for inspection.White Glove inspections were absolutely the ridiculous and the sublime. This was personal inspection, room inspection and barracks inspection rolled into one. There were two of them held Saturday afternoon after noon chow. This time, they had white gloves, measuring tape and ladder. The ladder was to inspect the tops of the of the pipes, exposed in the closet, for dust. Each room had one overstuffed chair. They even went as far as white gloving down inside the chair between the seat and the arm (you know, the place you check for any loose change, a missing earing, that kind of stuff. The catch all for missing items).Well, that’s the jest of the school. I graduated with 94 points, which was an equivalent of an A. Three of those gigs were stupid and I think that dust bunny was planted under my bunk. No one graduated with 100 points. We were told right from the beginning that if there was a gig, they would find it.Oh I forgot to mention the latrine. There was one bathroom to every two rooms. If any gigs was found in there, all four women got a gig. Yes, that was one of my gigs. One of the women in the other room decided to run a brush through her hair just before the inspection. The team found a strand of hair in the sink. The hardest school was an elective. Military Medical Law 101. Since it was related to the medical field, the military paid for it. I read a synopsis of the course and thought it would be interesting. Since it was just the basics, I could do most of my studying in the barracks during my free time. Those of us on active duty could attend as many classes as we wanted to, but there were mandatory classes. It was mostly reading material. In class the Instructor went into more depth about what we read. The mandatory classes were training films, tests, and those the Instructor deemed most important for the foundation of the entire course. A few of us were only going to take the basic course to familiarize ourselves with legal aspects of medicine. The rest were Military Lawyers, a few civilian Lawyers and a couple MPs. They were taking the entire course.A lot of that information was a little over my head because of the legal terminology. I toyed with the idea of buying a legal dictionary, but that was too much of an investment and the military wouldn’t buy it because it wasn’t a text book. I spent a lot of time in the library. I barely made a B. (Somewhere between a B minus and a C plus).
