Take a look at all the glossy corporate documents and websites. Read all the mission statements, vision statements and lists of ‘non-negotiable’ values.One word is missing. Can you see it?Honesty.No company truly wants its employees to be honest. That’s because in the real world, i.e. the one outside corporate brochures, life is messy:Too many mistakes are madeToo many rules are stretched.Too many rules, laws, standards, guidelines, blueprints, charters, action plans, checklists, interruptions and meetings fight with available time for employees’ attention (ever noticed how most companies expect employees to do their reading of rules and policies outside working hours?)Too many trade offs are implemented.Too much confidence is mistaken for competence.Too many short-term priorities stifle long-term benefits. The right thing to do always costs more than short-term budgets make provisions for.Too many mistakes must be corrected after they’ve happened (“why is it that we always have time around here to correct mistakes rather than avoid them?”)Too many positive environmental footprints are asked to wait a little longer.Above all, too many things remind employees that under caring appearances, companies are about making as much money as possible.The open secret is this: employees are expected to learn mission statements and lists of values off by heart but are expected to fudge or work around them or even to lie, especially to customers and to themselves, at the first hint of a gap between lofty preaching and reality-bound practice.Note that employees are rarely told explicitly to be dishonest. They’re told to be er, pragmatic.Ironically, most employees have no problem with fudging or lying. They’re intelligent, realistic and experienced enough to know that shit happens and that there’s always a fan nearby for it to hit. They get that and have splattered clothes to show for it.What employees do have trouble with, however, is the hypocrisy and cynicism surrounding all the missions, visions and values. These end up being perceived as arse-covering strategies.It’s no coincidence, by the way, that companies publish or update their values just as business screws are being tightened and employees are being cornered into taking ethical risks in order to meet their short-term targets. Published missions, visions and values can then always be pointed to as alibis for top management when things go wrong.One last thing: transparency is not the same as honesty. Transparency is honesty without guidance on what details to focus on. It’s an array of roads without a map or signage. Transparency hides mistakes and fudging in plain sight. It’s open dissimulation.
