I am not a tool developer so some of this is probably naive, but here is what I am thinking stream of consciousness…In the short term, you can look at the bug list for Eclipse, Atom, etc. and search for refactoring feature enhancement requests.In the medium term, improvements to existing tools, faster renaming, more robust pull-up/push-down, base type extraction, etc. Template extraction. Find code-duplicated-with-modifications and replace with functions. Addition of new languages to existing refactoring tools, for example a renaming feature for bash and PowerShell. XSLT refactoring tools, etc.In the long term, pretty much anything you can imagine. Type inference for converting JavaScript to TypeScript. Automated conversion of sequential algorithms to parallel algorithms. Robust syntax conversion between languages. Better tools for localization. Documentation inference / update. Automated production of REST or RPC services from library code. Algorithm extraction. Algorithm improvement, e.g., find and replace sequential searches with binary search or hash lookups, find data copying and replace with streaming, etc. Reduce cyclomatic complexity. AI code inspectors that refactor entire object hierarchies into cleaner shearing layers by reducing cross object dependencies. Framework conversion tools, e.g. Angular to React. Code inspection of changes to propose diffs to unit and integration tests.
