What are the best student organizations to join at UC Irvine? Why should students join them?

If you are interested in marketing, I would recommend joining the Marketing Association at UC Irvine. They host a wide variety of events such as:Guest Speakers who are professionals in the field and come from a variety of industries. Previous guest speakers came from Amazon, Allergan, Cintas, Google, and Riot Games to name a few.Workshops to learn about new marketing skills. Past workshops were on Canva, HTML, and SEO. They also offer career development workshops where they invite the Career Center to review resumes and give best practices on interviewing and navigating the job fair.Company Tours at local advertising agencies such as Rhythm Advertising and Young Company.Networking Sessions with marketing professors from The Paul Merage School of Business and members of the American Marketing Association in Orange County.Socials that are held once or twice per quarter, which allow you to create deeper connections to other members and board members. As the previous VP of Internal Affairs, I have heard from past members that they enjoyed our events and our enthusiasm for welcoming new members to the organization. In addition, they liked how we were open to all majors and that students could join throughout the year. Personally, I have made some really great friends and networks through this organization. They will have a booth during the Anteater Involvement Fair if you want more information about the events taking place this upcoming academic year. Also, here is a link to the club website: https://www.maucirvine.com/

Who are the War Elephant Editors?

Hello! My name is Kristine Carlson and I wear a few hats here at War Elephant. I love hats, so it suits me well. You may already know me as a Contributor and a Sheepdog - I’ve been writing with War Elephant since January 2019 - I think since I wrote about the Gillette advertisement. I do a lot more “behind the scenes” work at War Elephant than writing, which is probably good for War Elephant although less creative than I intended.I started out just following the space, and then joining the War Elephant Discord server to chat with people. I quickly started becoming involved with the community, offering to help others with reviewing their writing and looking up references as a researcher, and welcoming new people into the group as a member of the Welcome Crew, and then my responsibilities grew over time. The team is still looking for more people (many more people) so please come join us on Discord if you are interested and be sure to mention that you want to be active! We sat down and discussed seriously the role of Editor seriously before implementing it. This was a pretty natural move when we realized the relationship of writers to content they want to get out to people. Editors in War Elephant coordinate and facilitate content creators as they work on all the various different types of content we produce in our spaces.Much like a publishing Editor, we make final decisions about what appears on War Elephant, and help oversee the team of volunteers who assist writers with research and reviewing. Our Contributors should feel free to reach out to any of us with questions at all times (also please feel free to approach any of our Researchers or Reviewers with technical writing questions — you are making them feel useful). We also help select new Contributors. If you wish to become a Contributor, Jon Davis has written a very useful post: How to Become a War Elephant Contributor.I have a few qualifications for this role. I went to graduate school in physical chemistry at the University of North Dakota. I’ve taught undergraduate chemistry and been responsible as a graduate TA for reviewing graduate papers. I’ve reviewed many papers for publication in peer-reviewed journals. I have served as an editor various small publications over the years. I also took a ridiculous number of English courses, though I’m not really sure that terse listing of qualifications in the passive voice really demonstrates it well.Like fellow editor Ian Miller , I’m Minnesotan (as he says, “best state!” - I even wrote about that!). I identify politically as a Classical Liberal. I love the beauty in the world around me and have a large garden and enjoy hiking and photographing the beautiful things I see, and occasionally writing inane poetry about it. I am also a musician and deeply involved in my local community’s arts scene.I love War Elephant’s mission of explaining conservative viewpoints thoroughly and calmly. Jon’s 3R’s post was what got me onto Discord. It still inspires me. I hope it inspires others, and I look forward to making it possible for more people to get their voices out there!Relaxed. Researched. Respectful. - War Elephant

What were the highlights of PM Modi's speech on New Year's Eve 2017 and what are your views about it ?

For all those who had been forwarding forwards that showed a nation biting its nails wondering what bomb would be delivered after “Mitron”, the speech was a pleasant surprise or a damp squib, whichever way one looks at it, it didn't quite rattle anyone except possibly the few bank people he has promised to hunt down who had opened the back doors and allowed cash to flow freely in and out.The notes in the PM's speech struck the right places and he said the right things, hence the speech cannot be divided into the good, bad and the ugly - merely good, better and unsaid. What struck me while I heard the speech was that he could have made this speech on any day of his choosing and why choose New Year's Eve? It might very well have been on the evening of the 30th of December, the last day of the demonetisation drive - since it was a normal, run of the mill, man ki baat kind of affair. At least Indians could have gone in with the business of ringing in the new year in peace. Possibly that's just me and I shall be slammed all over again for thinking of me and not the giraffe.(Aside for those unfamiliar with the giraffes analogy: There is a popular meme these days about wondering whether the coffee gets cold by the time it reaches the bottom of the giraffe's neck. Then it proceeds to say, “You never thought of that, did you? No. You only think about yourself.”)Wayward bank officials: I am happy he addressed that elephant in the room and has promised to bring them and their careers to the logical conclusion. Did bring some peace to my disturbed mind.Remote areas to get better banking attention: This is a very welcome move, possibly a precursor to the demon drive, but definitely something far flung areas needed and shall appreciate.Huge amount of money recovered: Well, huge amount recovered with no numbers mentioned and no talk of how much of it is black money. Possibly and hopefully, we shall know with time, but for now the PM's speech assures us that the banking system is now flush with funds and the way forward is with a lot of benefits to the common man.BHIM app: The app looks promising from reviews that I have read. I do hope the common man shall benefit from it because an app that works using the all-present Aadhaar card and doesn't need an internet connection would be the product for these times in places without internet access. However, I hope it can sustain the strain of lakhs of people accessing at the same time and not collapse like the previous Niti Ayog suggestions.Benefits to pregnant women and the elderly: Happy for them although a Congress representative was saying this was an old scheme by their government stopped and revived by BJP? Can neither agree not disagree because I do not know the facts. Am willing to amend my answer given the facts. I do not see the relevance of the announcement wrt demonetisation, though.73rd (?) Announcement: Cash withdrawal rules changed from something to something else. Cap remains unchanged because BJP spokespersons on various channels have declared 'nobody' needs more than 24K a week. Hence, the rule is fine. Was the date and speech by PM required for this announcement which might be repealed in ten hours? Your guess is as good as mine.Assurance to farmers, small business owners that the government has their interests in mind - sops announced, interest rate slash promised, loans made easier. This speech seemed like a message to the people of the country that the PM and his group are aware of the problems the common man has faced over the last 50 days and that the honest shall be rewarded for their patience and the dishonest given a chance to shape up and turn honest. The year has turned and one hopes that the woes stayed behind in the past year. Fortunately for me, I did not lose a precious family member to demonetisation and can say that some day I shall forget the troubled times of demonetisation and this shall merely be a blip in the memory radar but there will always be a part of me that shall sympathize with those who lost their loved ones for no fault of theirs - simply because they were in the wrong place at the wrong time. For those people the government and the PM has no mention - collateral damage they never discuss.Other than that, black money was just a mention without any substantiation. Possibly the accounting shall happen soon. Meanwhile we wait.A new year has begun on a good note especially for the poor. One thing I like about this government has been that they are certainly better than the last one, have had no scams (one has heard of), their nomenclature of schemes is harmless, unlike the Gandhi's (every time the water we get in our taps gets labeled 'Sonia Vihar', I cringe), Modiji and his team inspire confidence because they seem to believe in what they do (hopefully I shall believe as soon as I am convinced all is actually well). So, yes, thankfully the speech went smoothly without any jarring note (no, pun unintended) although why tonight and not a other night shall be a source of eternal mystery to me. All I can think of is that his first date stole the thunder from the US elections and the second one could have from the New Year. Thankfully not. Thanks for the A2A Nagarajan Srinivas (நாகராஜன் ஸ்ரீனிவாஸ்) ji
