Did people in the Great Depression sell their kids?

From 1924 to 1950 Georgia Tann - Wikipedia a nationally known child care expert ran the Tennessee Children’s Home Society. This unlicensed adoption agency sold an estimated 5000 white infants on an illegal adoption circuit. During her tenure at the TCHS, the region had the highest infant mortality rate in the nation, some suggesting she might actually have been a serial killer. Tann sometimes paid a nominal sum but usually employed coercion, threats of legal action and sometimes simply stole children from their biological parents, almost exclusively poor single mothers of which there were sadly many during the Depression. Through her extensive political connections including Memphis Family Court Judge Camille Kelley - Wikipedia, local millionaire and former mayor of Memphis E. H. Crump - Wikipedia, and a number of police, doctors and nurses on the payroll she would also take babies from residents of prisons, mental and care institutions. The mother was often told that their child was stillborn. These infants were then sold to unassuming families with Tann even placing adverts in local newspapers. Sadly some were also sold into what was effectively slavery as child labourers and domestics. Worse, some were sold to paedophiles. However, where the bulk of the money came from was interstate adoptions with potential parents willing to pay $5000 ($70K in 2018).While Georgia Tann was seriously rich with assets in the millions, children under her care were also dying through neglect and abuse. In 26 years it is estimated that at least 500 children died at the hands of Tann, sexual abuse also being rife within the Home. One surviving victim stated that Tann and others would hit the children “…on the scalp so no one could see the bruises”, and would routinely tie a rope around a child’s wrists and hang it up on a coat rack if the child misbehaved. During the winter of 1945 50 children are known to have died.Rumours had followed Tann for years but then in 1950 Gordon Browning, a political rival of Crump was elected mayor of Memphis and launched an investigation. Without Crump in power, she knew the game was up. Tann however died of uterine cancer two days later thus escaping her richly deserved justice. Two months later, the Tennessee Children’s Home Society closed.Notable personalities who used the Tennessee Children's Home Society (though unaware the adoptions legality) included Joan Crawford, New York Governor Herbert Lehman, Dick Powell, and the Adoptive parents of wrestler Ric Flair.19 of the children who died at the Tennessee Children's Home Society were buried in unmarked graves in the Elmwood cemetery, Tann simply recording the children by their first names. In 2015 the cemetery raised enough money to erect a monument to their memory. "In memory of the 19 children who finally rest here unmarked if not unknown, and of all the hundreds who died under the cold, hard hand of the Tennessee Children's Home Society. Their final resting place unknown. Their final peace a blessing. The hard lesson of their fate changed adoption procedure and law nationwide."

Why would you not consider moving back to your hometown to retire?

I will not be returning to my hometown of Dayton, Ohio to retire. In the thirty-six years I have been away my city has changed. Imagine that. Of course, I have changed as well. My old city and I have lived apart for too long to make it work again.Sometimes when I return for a visit I feel like Chrissy Hines who sang, "I went back to Ohio, but my city was gone."I won't show you photos of my old neighborhood because it's now in ruins. I prefer to remember it as it used to be.And I cannot show you the places I used to go when I was growing up, such as the skating rink, the mall, the concert hall where I saw Grand Funk Railroad at the tender age of 12, which was my first rock concert. I could only show you vacant lots because all those places of my youth, where my childhood friends and I passed countless happy hours, exist only in my memories.I am visiting my hometown this week and spending time with my elderly mother and we went for a drive past many of the aforementioned places. I will show you this photo from where my high school used to be. It's now just an empty field.Ohio still has fond memories and will always hold a special place in my heart. But every time I cross the state line, my mind begins to wander and I reminisce. Some of the memories are pleasant, but others bring tears to my eyes.Crossing the mighty Ohio River on State Route 23 into Portsmouth, taken March 28, 2021.I think about my old friends that didn't make it. I remember my friend Ray, who died at 26 from a defective heart valve. I think of Randy who died at the age of 25 in a hail of gunfire during a drug deal gone bad. Then there was Tommy, who died of cancer a few years ago at age 57. I also fondly remember Terry, the first girl I ever loved, who passed away at 48, cause of death unknown. And the most recent, my childhood friend Greg, who died last December from COVID-19.I recall the crazy times we had in our youth and I smile. It seems like yesterday. My wife and I have put down deep roots in the commonwealth of Virginia. That's where we now call home. We have raised our three sons there, all now grown. They have become strong, determined men, all making their own way in the world. When we retire, we will remain in Virginia.Thomas Wolfe was right; you can't go home again.
