Is shutting the border possible for Nepal in order to change it’s relationship with India?

Indian Army in Nepal 2015 providing earthquake relief.Shutting borders down is a lot easier said than done. The implicit economic results for Nepal by shutting it’s border down with India would be catastrophic for trade and the movement of people. Indians and Nepalese citizens do not need Visas to come to each other’s countries. Both peoples can work in each other’s countries and this situation is very unique in South Asia. Nepal and India have more in common than what sets them apart. Both Nations are Hindu majority nations, and both Nations have similar religious minorities. Yet, there is so much talk of hate against India in Nepal’s parliament and by many of it’s politicians. They talk as if millions of Nepalese workers do not live in India. As if these workers do not send back billions of dollars in remittances every year. In fact these politicians began an Anti-India campaign right after the Nepal Earthquake in 2015. Indian Army Troops assisted in saving thousands of lives. In many cases Indian troops arrived before Nepalese relief came. The footage showed Indian rescue operations taking place all over Nepal. Indian Helicopters were flying and Indian medical assistance poured across the border as if this had occurred in India. India was assisting in a way which showed we were just like one family. Soon after this some Nepalese politicians began agitating against India. They claimed India had shut the border down with Nepal. It became very clear that the situation was very suspicious and trucks were stuck in mile long lines on both sides of the border. This was a way for those who felt their image had been tarnished to reassert their own power, as they felt they had been shown as being incapable of doing what was required to help the Nepalese people. There are certain politicians in Nepal who want to create these sentiments as they know there are too many similarities between India and Nepal. They feel that they are insuring their own power and survival this way. This pattern has been seen for decades, but it seems that it’s has become ingrained in Nepal for many people. Over the years I have met many people from Nepal. When I was in college, I met one of the descendants of Sherpa Norgay, He became a good friend and harbored no ill will towards India. He actually could speak Hindi and he would constantly stress the similarity of our background. One thing which I still remember is that he stated, “It does not matter which side of the border Buddha was born, for he walked on both sides.” This simple but very true observation is really what forms the relationship is between India and Nepal. Buddha may have born on the Nepalese side of the border but he gained enlightenment in India. When he was born it is certain that he was nourished by food which came from both sides of this border as well. Buddhism became the state religion of India under Emperor Ashoka and most of Nepal was under his rule. China is using this issue to promote their own narrow vision of harming the Unity of South Asia, and lessening Emperor Ashoka’s role and hence India’s in the spread and development of Buddhism. But in all reality they should look at all the Buddhist temples they destroyed in Tibet and thier inhumane treatment of Tibetans and Muslim Chinese citizens. The idea of a nation is imagined, it exists in our mind. Yes there are real borders and massive implementation of technology in recent years to make this reality become more physical. But visionary leaders in the past saw through all of this, and in the case of Nepal and India they saw an infinite commonality, there was even talk of becoming one country in the 1950’s. Our imagined link is not one of shutting down the border. For Indians view Nepal as a special place, one which is linked to India and very close to India but not exactly like India. It is a mountainous nation on the Horizon of India, linked by history, culture and language. When tragedy befell Nepal, India did not think twice of sending what ever was necessary to help. It did for Nepal would it would have done for any State in the Indian Union. This truly was a sign of the deep brotherly love that India feels for Nepal.Nepal earthquake: Kathmandu welcomes and thanks India for rescue operations, says UN - Firstpost

How was it like to attend the Quora world meetup 2017 in Kathmandu?

I knew what I could expect at a Quora Meetup because of my experience in July on the first ever Quora Meetup in Nepal. The Quora World Meetup, Kathmandu exceeded my expectations.I was a little late in reaching King's College, Bijulibazaar, where the programme was organised. So I missed the major part of Introduction Session. After most of the participants introduced themselves, Q/A session began. We discussed on personal experiences, psychology, dreams, depression/anxiety/panic attacks and friendship. After a short break, commenced another interesting session--the debate session. We debated on two topics:Should the capital of Nepal be shifted from Kathmandu?Should Diversity Visa (DV) be banned for Nepal? Two groups were formed. Each group discussed the points. And presented points for or against the topic that was decided earlier by toss. The programme ended with a photo session of the participants. It was a great experience.Cheers ☺

How did you get into IIM?

I sat for CAT for the first time in final year of BA ( Hons ) in SRCC; Did not make it to any IIM. In those days no percentiles were given. In MA final year, was selected as PO in SBI. Joined and was posted all over the country. Worked in 5 branches; 4 of them as Branch Manager. Several years spent posted at Ahmedabad. Had many friends in IIMA, including 3 SBI batchmates who resigned and joined IIMA. Used to visit them on campus. I would drive my bike up the Stanford ramp and park next to D 10. Never imagined I could one day study there. Life and career proceeded almost on autopilot and was very happy. Married and we had a daughter.Posted for 'Rural Assignment' as Branch Manager of small branch in Bahraich Dist, on Nepal border. Branch was in the middle of a wildlife sanctuary ( Katarniyaghat Sanctuary ). Wonderful staff, and great people. Honest, open and friendly. This was the happiest posting of mine in SBI. 12 years in SBI.During this time, felt the need to do something more. Applied for MBA in US; Accepted in several universities ( USC and some more ); Was refused a student visa by US Embassy in Delhi, even though I was going alone, and leaving a wife and daughter behind. Visa refused in August. While thinking about MBA had also filled the form for CAT. Test center was Lucknow ( Carmel Convent ) on Sunday. In December, on a Saturday afternoon, closed SBI Branch at 2 pm ( I held the strong room keys and could not leave earlier ). Drove 5 hours to Lucknow arriving at night. Working full time at SBI. No course of study or coaching at the village where I was posted.Appeared for CAT on Sunday morning.Got calls for IIMA and IIMCIIMA interview at IIT Kanpur ( Also on a Sunday ). Drove from branch to Lucknow on Saturday evening. Had dinner at home. Drove to Kanpur after night. Arrived at 2 am at relatives place, and stayed chatting with him for an hour. Present at interview at 9 am. For some reason, interview committee must have given me good marks; I was probably a novelty wanting to join IIMA at this advanced age and experience.Selected and joined IIMA; Oldest student in the batch and shifted the class age and experience average a couple of notches higher. Only student who had his daughter visiting him on campus. My neice was also accepted in the same year to IIMA, and we were an uncle / neice in the same class.I often wonder how life may have been different if the US visa officer had in those 3 minutes decided to give me a visa. Where and what would I have been?
