A few days after Mahatma Gandhi’s death, Harijan, the english weekly he founded, published his last article titled. “His Last Will And Testament”.In this, Mahatma Gandhi stated and I quote:[1]Though split into two, India having attained political independence through means devised by the Indian National Congress, the Congress in its present shape and form, i.e., as a propaganda vehicle and parliamentary machine, has outlived its use.In his last speech to the Constituent Assembly, on 25th November 1949,Dr. B R Ambedkar had a warning for the new India[2] :Bhakti in religion may be a road to the salvation of the soul. But in politics, Bhakti or hero-worship is a sure road to degradation and to eventual dictatorship.Both Gandhi and Ambedkar, although opposed to each other in ideologies, somehow foresaw the future of the Indian National Congress Party - and if things remain the same, the future of BJP as well.Today, Indian National Congress Party - which helped India gain Independence in 1947 - nurturing leaders like Bal Gangadhar Tilak, Subhas Bose, K Kamaraj, Khan Abdul Gaffar Khan and Kamaladevi Chattopadhyay - is reduced to a mid sized family business, run without an ideology.It is a sinking ship - which the rats are abandoning in packs.There are defections in the Congress Party, primarily because most are convinced, this headless chicken is not going to sit on the throne again.Taking the point further, Most of these rats are joining the BJP - not because of their ideology, but because of the lure of power.The BJP of 2019 is no different from the Congress of 1969 - they had an infallible dear leader then, they have an infallible dear leader today. Everything great was attributed to her then, everything great is attributed to him today - it wasn’t okay to criticize her back then, it isn’t okay to criticize him today.India was Indira then, Modi is Indira today.But rats are rats you see. If BJP fails to learn from this sinking ship - those rats it collected from Congress Party, and a few others, it had all along, will spend no time in abandoning BJP as well.Thanks for reading. When the biggest stars were making $175 per week in 1916 Hollywood, Chaplin demanded $10,000 per week, plus six-figure bonuses and got it. He quickly became one of the wealthiest people in the world, earning a base salary of a million dollars per year in 1918.Public records show a net worth of 50 million dollars. However, much of it was private. He even buried a million dollars cash in his backyard. It is estimated Chaplin may have had 415 million dollars when he died in 1977 - the most of any entertainer at the time, surpassing Elvis and John Lennon.His will left 100 million British pounds to his 4th and final wife, Oona. (I believe that was about 170 million dollars.) To his many grandchildren, Chaplin left 15 guineas; this is a token amount and, as an attorney, I assume was stated to prevent his grandchildren from contesting the will. Chaplin's children each received 150 pounds, except for one - Michael [pictured below], his favorite child, received the vast fortune that remained. And Mrs. Elizabeth Drew, his housekeeper got the bed and curtains that she so admired.
