My sponsored 18-year-old niece (Philippines) was interviewed and passed she applied for a two-year community college in California.That was our suggestion since we thought her transition to the American lifestyle and college system would be easier at a smaller school.She was asked what her father did for a living. “A Farmer. He doesn’t work the fields, but manages the family property, and ‘sharecrops’ the land”.She was asked about why the community college? She replied; “An easier transition and the college has a program “A.A. and Transfer” - as many as 70 units are transferable to the State University system and after two or three years I can transfer and enter as a 3rd-year student.”She was asked where the College is located, “Less than 2km from my Aunt’s house.”She was asked about the financial arrangements:I made her an indexed folder with sections for Academic:- (Diploma, Honors Certificate, TOEFL Score page) Financial:- (A copy of the required Notarized Affidavit of support for the College, and an I-134, plus the first 2 pages of our tax return. ) There were other sections with a photo of her family - 8 Brothers and sisters, photos of their house, a picture from graduation with her mother and father.I knew the consular official was not going to look at all this stuff, but I felt my niece would appear and feel confident having the documents with her. Just in case if things got 'sticky' she could refer to something.When asked about the financial arrangements she said: “Oh, I have an affidavit for the College here”, she then opened the folder to the page and slipped it to the consul. The consul glanced at the Notarized copy and flipped thru the other pages.As she returned the folder the consul asked what she will do after graduation. My niece replied; “I’m coming back home. I believe I can get a real good job here with a California University degree”.“You are Approved, you will get your passport and visa in about a week”.“Next?”(*Thanks to Kathryn Berck for her sound, logical advice)

Save the postage. It will have absolutely zero benefit. Many Americans are under the false assumptions that they can sponsor a foreigner with a letter of support to help them obtain a tourist or other non-immigrant visa. This is entirely false and am tired of seeing this same question posted on here over and over. ALL non-immigrant visa applicants MUST be able to pass the interview and convince a skepticle consular official ON THEIR OWN MERITS. A citizen providing a letter of support does nothing because it is not legally enforceable. On the other hand, an immigrant visa such as a CR1 or IR1 (usually a marriage visa), DOES require the US citizen to prove ability to support, but not in a letter. Rather, it will be in a properly completed I-864 Affidavit Of Support, along with all the documents that go along with it. This IS enforceable (though rarely is in practice). This form cannot be submitted with a non-immigrant visa application.

As long as you have required documents and you travel genuine you should not worry. Since your friend is sponsoring you he/she will have to fill affidavit of support and you can use this in list of documents you carry for us b2 visa application. Also highly recommended that you have an invitation letter from that friend and detailed itinerary (where when how long details your visit is for). Would also recommend to show your roots in Philippines so that visa officers are convinced you will return to your home country. Cheers! Keep us informed about your visa approval :)
