I might have an interesting take on this subject/question, as I have switched opinion on this matter as I came of age.Context:- I do not have the exact details of all the context and background. That can easily be found on the Internet. To summarise, there is no clear cut evidence that there was a temple at that exact spot. But there are some archaeological indications, apart from the chronicle by an English writer that it was called ‘Masjid-e-Janmasthan’(Mosque of the Birthplace) during 17th century. It is a folklore for sure. And there is also the tradition of celebrating ‘Ramleela’ festival around the mosque since some time.Immediate Context:- Hindus laid the claim to the disputed site in the court. The High/Supreme court was yet to make a decision and ordered the disputed site to be sealed and secured until a decision is reached.What Happened:- Hindu Karsevaks gathered in thousands around the site, supposedly to perform a ritual or I don’t know what. They were led by BJP leaders Atal Bihari Vajpayee and Lal Krishna Advani. Hinduism on the other hand, is a highly decentralised religion. There is no ONE GOD Ram and the holy sites in Hinduism are scattered all across the country. Just a few kilometers across, you will find places where Ram did such and such thing during his ‘Vanvaas’, or Pandavas stayed during their ‘Vanvaas’, or there will be another legend. There is no dearth of Gods and related stories in Hinduism.There is insufficient evidence for a temple being destroyed at the site to built a mosque in 16th century. This is not of much importance in my view, because I think that religion is mostly about ‘Belief’ NOT logic, but even then, we are not sure whether this belief was ‘manufactured’ by Ram Temple movement by RSS/Hindu Mahasabha since 19th century.The mosque is not an ordinary mosque. It is a very old mosque. Built in 15th century. It was noted for it’s amazing sound acoustic effects. It was one of our archaeological and historical assets!I can understand anger in me or in other hindus regarding destruction of temples during Islamic Rule. But that anger doesn’t make any sense. I mean, you can’t punish those rulers now. They are already dead. Besides, judging past rulers on the basis of modern ethics and thought is absurd and senseless. They were acting according to their times and thoughts. What they did, was simply looting and/or Politics of Conquest(the big temples in ancient and medieval India, were not just simply places of worship, but also big repositories of material wealth, and having subtle role in Politics and Political Power, which Mosques weren’t). Also, there are many examples of Hindus looting and/or destroying Hindu/Buddhist temples/idols/monasteries for the above mentioned reasons only - which clearly indicates how temples were tied to the polity of the region rather than solely being a religious place of worship!The most important and doubtless point is that the court orders were publicly violated, and police didn’t do anything. This was a very dangerous and wrong precedent and that is if the popular opinion is against a law or order, that order/law can be violated at will! Popular opinion matters in a democracy, and it can affect the law but there is a due process for that. Not the way of the ‘jungle raj’ which was displayed on that day.Even if it is Lord Ram’s birthplace, I don’t want a temple there to honor Lord Ram by hurting the religious sentiments of crores of Indian Muslims. My Lord Ram doesn’t believe in hate but in love. He himself wouldn’t have wanted to built a temple in his name by destroying a religious structure and hence feelings and sentiments of many! Yes, if Muslims as a whole, themselves allow for this, then I don’t think there is much issue in building the temple.If the logic is to even out the wrongs done centuries ago, what about the wrongs done by upper caste hindus to lower caste hindus. Is there a limit at which this argument will stop?!? This logic doesn’t make any sense because it is impossible to implement and idiotic at every level!In a way, what was happening is that many Hindus were very angry on the past Muslim Rulers, and they were taking all this anger out on the present day Indian Muslims, as if it is one and the same thing. I don’t need to tell how idiotic this is!Last but not the least, I think Temples and Mosques, are just physically and symbolically different. I am one, who believes that all Gods in all religions are One and only. I mean, even when the Mosque was there, people used to do Puja there and celebrate also. What was the need to destroy the Mosque?!? Because, for some people, worshipping Lord Ram from the bottom of the heart and full devotion, is secondary. What’s more important to them, is these superficial structural differences between a Temple and a Mosque. Yes, some people objected because the Mosque was supposedly built after destroying the Temple. So what? It was done centuries ago. A Mosque is much much more than who built it and with what intentions! It is a religious structure and has religious significance. Destroying a religious structure centuries ago, is NOT the same as destroying one now!Mosque is still a holy place for muslims, that is all that matters. Religious sentiments are hurt - that is what matters. And I do not support building a temple to our GOD in such way! If I were a muslim, I wouldn’t have minded the replacement BUT definitely the way it was done.I still say: Research and consult historians to find out how much of the sacred site was this before RSS/Hindu Mahasabha, made it an issue in late 19th century; what was the level of belief that Lord Ram was born there among people/masses? If the answer comes out to be negative then we can conclude that the belief we now see is ‘manufactured’ NOT genuine and if the answer is positive then we can do a replacement BUT - and this is of prime importance - ONLY with the consent of muslims. And there is a proper/good way of building consent, and I must say that most parties and intellectuals, including secular/liberal/left ones, have been counterproductive regarding this, either in the name of vote bank politics or in the name of ‘political correctness’.I want to emphasize here that we even don’t know whether MAJORITY of Hindus want temple built at the exact spot by destroying the mosque or whether MAJORITY of muslims have a problem with the temple being built there. What we are, in effect doing is, listening to some religious figureheads(not selected on the basis of some logical criteria) to determine what ALL of the community(comprising of crores of people) want, which is totally idiotic! And it’s not that hard to take an idea of what the community(as a whole) wants - we conduct Census every 10 years, and national elections every 5 years - how difficult is it to tweak those a little bit in order to gauge the opinions?!I think the most appropriate thing to do is to construct a religious structure there which is a combination of temple and mosque(obviously, with the permission of Muslims). Open to all, hindus and muslims!I do think that Islam ought to reform itself in many respects. It’s become both idiotic and dangerous under Wahhabism and Deobandi influence - becoming more and more like Arabic culture/version of Islam under the effects and impacts of modernity and modern technologies, easing transportation of both ideas and people! There has also been a certain kind of dangerous appeasement going on for them since decades of Congress rule. All this is more harmful to Muslims themselves than to the rest of the country.We either do one of two things with Muslims, depending on whether BJP or Congress is in power:-Either we discriminate them or do wrong to them; treat them as second class citizens(BJP rule).Or, we appease them and give them special treatment because they are a minority(Congress rule).And both these things are wrong!
