Let’s say you’re the letter T. You probably aren’t, but this is a hypothetical scenario involving sounds being funny and so we can afford to be surreal here. You, the T, are flying around in someone’s mouth, being shoved forward a little, backwards a bit, to one side, to the other, flapped, aspirated, and generally treated terribly by the tongue. It’s awful, for sure, but this is life to a T.You’ll find yourself in clusters for much of your day. Maybe you’ll be grouped with an s as in stop, or an r as in trap - or even wedged between both, as in strength. If you’re not paired with a consonant, you’ll find yourself shoved up snug against a vowel: either before it as in tool, tar, or after as in hat, pet.When you’re a sound, you have to look out for yourself. It’s like running along a path: the path is full of lots of twists and turns and obstacles, but you’ve run it lots of times before, so you know where everything is and don’t trip or fall much anymore. The prefix in- in Latin, meaning “not”, also underwent a bout of having its final consonant become more like the first consonant of the word it was stuck to:in + possible = impossible (“n” becomes more like “p” by moving up to the lips to become an “m”)in + legal = illegal (“n” becomes more like “l” by, well…becoming an “l”)in + relevant = irrelevant (“n” becomes more like “r” by, again, becoming an “r” outright)Vowels also have an annoying habit of pulling sounds every which way and back. There are lots of examples of this in English: on its way from Latin to French to English, the suffix -tion shifted from actually being pronounced “tion” to being something more like “shon”. Portuguese has it even worse: every T or D before an I or E becomes a CH and J, respectively.
