Is a police investigation regarding any crime as thrilling as shown in TV and movies in India?

Would like to share a real life investigation, for you to decide on your own.Brief Particulars of the Case:Victim say, “XYZ” phone number suddenly stopped working on some fine day. He assumed it to be some connectivity issue.Neither mails nor OTPs were received regarding any banking transaction for the next 2 days.Yet, mysteriously Rs 17 lacs were debited from his account!Victim reported the matters to us and informed the bank too, regarding the fraudulent transactions, seeking closure of his account and to start the money refund process. We registered an FIR and initiated the investigation process.Investigation Process:We started with the bank transaction details, of the victim. And we were surprised to know that - 7 beneficiaries were added to his account and subsequently, money was transferred to three of those accounts. Now we were even more puzzled. How beneficiaries could have been added? As the process requires both access to bank account login credentials and the OTP sent on the registered phone number. We had scarce information intially - phone number stopped working - so a suspected SIM swap case, isn't it? Also successful SIM swap can provide access to OTPs to log into the bank account. But what about login credentials? The answer to this question was bit easy to guess - phishing. With further interview with the victim, we concluded that he had entered login details in a website which appeared similar to his bank, but was redirected to a 404 error after entering the login credentials. Commonly executed type of a phishing attack! So, it was a SIM swap attack case where login details were compromised with phishing attack and OTPs were received by conducting a SIM swap attack. Next what?Wait, after SIM swap attacks, OTPs are not received for the next 24 hours. So, how the fraudusters received the OTPs to log into the account, within 24 hours? Is any bank insider involved too, who overrode the entire bank system? The answer was - use of IVR systems to override the OTPs.We brainstormed further, and decided to get login IPs details, to know the details of person(s) who breached XYZ's account. The entire process to find the accused is bit complicated - especially after use of NAT (Network Address Translation) and PAT (Port Address Translation). It took time, but we could eventually find Personally Identifiable Information of the fraudusters. But what about SIM swap attacks? How to find the SIM swap attackers? Again we wrote to the Telecom Service Provider and got all the details of SIM swap requests - approved and rejected both. And guess what - another surprise was awaiting us. There were some previous SIM swap requests too, and the requests were initiated from the native place of the victim. We seemed to struck the goldmine! We anticipated, that the frauduster is someone close to the victim. But, upon digging the information further, we were dejected as this wasn't the case. It was a coincidence, though bewildering and beyond imagination. Anyways, we continued. We found details of all the other bank accounts of the three persons in whose account money was transferred. And the results were again surprising - total amount transacted in these 30+ accounts (yes 30+ accounts) in 10+ banks ran into several crores! And their Income Tax returns (which we got from IT dept) was absolute zero. So? We froze all of those bank accounts. Now, what's up?We did several other analysis like CAF of the numbers linked to bank accounts (around 15), their Call Detail Records analysis, CAF of alternate numbers of numbers linked to the bank accounts analysis too! (around 25), reverse IMEI search (from phone number we found the phone in which the SIM was working and then we found all the SIMs that were used in that particular phone - pretty tiring and exhautive analysis), mail ID linked to bank accounts analysis, documents submitted to the bank accounts analysis, SIM swap requests analysis and much more. The entire process took a whopping 2 months + time and then we were ready to catch those fraudusters with credible evidence in hand! The process was tedious, complicated and time taking, and last but not the least, interesting and surprising. Every surprise made us toil harder and we throughly enjoyed the investigation process.Edit: After this case we realised the real dangers of SIM swap attacks. After successful SIM swap, a criminal can potentially take over your what's app, control your emails, transfer domains (worth billions for some), perform unauthorized financial transaction and much more. The extent of damage depends on the imagination of the criminal!Personally, it's THE crime, which haunts me the most and am most watchful for.
