PDF Editor FAQ

How should a student pursuing undergraduate studies at Illinois Institute of Technology prepare to get into the top US universities for a PhD program in the field of mechanics?

I'll preface this by saying that the contents to follow apply to students from all universities/colleges/departments/majors/degree programs.I am unsure of how far into undergrad you are so I'll answer assuming you're a first or second year student, with a world of opportunities and time available to you. A generic grad school application consists of:Academic records (GPA, publications)Research/Industrial experiences (projects, internships)Letters of recommendation (references)Standardized test scores (GRE, TOEFL/IELTS)Essays (statement of purpose, cultural diversity statement)Academic RecordsThe importance of GPA cannot be emphasized enough. Try to be among the top 3 or top 5 of your class to ensure a good shot at a dream school of your choice. If you do happen to falter for a semester or two, publication(s) and stellar recommendations might help you to negate this.Take note here that your core grades matter. 10s in humanities courses will not help if your core GPA is low.Research/Industrial ExperiencesThis comes in the form of summer (or winter) internships, course projects, undergraduate research opportunities and/or projects you've been involved with while at IIT e.g. FSAE, Satellite project, BioSynth et al. Most students looking to get into a PhD program will look for foreign internships in research institutes with a preference for reputed professors and universities. Core industrial internships will also help you in the same way. During your intern try to broaden your horizons, learn from your peers and to collaborate, explore and think out of the box. Getting a publication out of an intern is a huge plus that reinforces your apping profile manifold.I'd stress here to say that if you wish to apply in a branch that is different from your major, e.g. you wish to do a PhD in Electrical Engineering while currently studying Mechanical Engineering, you must look to build your profile in EE while still maintaining your MechE grades. Take up an EE minor, do extra courses, do EE projects.Caution: Don't spam professors for foreign internships. Do your homework and make your emails crisp and relevant.Letters of Recommendation/ReferencesThese are written by people who can vouch for your skills and profile. The more credible the person, the better the things (s)he has to say about you, the more notable your application becomes. These people are often your professors, people you interned under - your advisor in case of a foreign intern, your project head in case of an industrial one, your dual degree project guide. Most applications will ask for three references and sometimes prefer one of your referees be from the school you did undergrad at so make sure to have at least one professor from IITB MechE, most probably your DDP guide, who will say good things about you.GRE/TOEFL/IELTSThese are standardized tests designed to test your English and Quantitative (arithmetic) skills. The scores are often valid for multiple years - 2 years (TOEFL, IELTS) and 5 years (GRE). You should choose to get done with them by the beginning of your final year to allow to you apply for programs starting the next fall. Certain departments ask for Subject GRE scores (e.g. math, physics, chemistry, biology) so check with the program you wish to apply to what the application requirements are.EssaysThe most important one is called a Statement of Purpose or Personal Statement. It essentially is your chance to say why you want to do a PhD, what attracts you towards it, how it makes sense for your life, why you've worked towards it and how you will benefit from it, among other things. It is a chance to justify yourself in case you screwed up somewhere - if your GPA dropped for a semester if you were on medical leave et al. This is an extremely personal essay and any form of plagiarism will hit you badly. Some US schools will also ask for a Cultural Diversity Statement. This is a short write up on your cultural background and often, how you feel your addition to the graduate population will benefit the community at the school and you.Talk to your seniors and mentors to know more about the nuances of all of the above. Do talk to professors to figure out what programs at what universities will be most suitable to your interests. Finally, often with the most complete and impressive application, people have been known to be rejected by schools and programs of their choice. So as far as you can, cover your bases and hope luck is with you. All the best!ResourcesThe IITB Apping Guide - Page on IitbGraduate School Application Guidethegradcafe.comHow important is it for me to have done a foreign internship to get a MS/PhD from a prestigious institute like Stanford or MIT?

Can a company legally say no to you resigning if you give the proper amount of notice? My mom tried to quit her job but the company said no to her.

This actually happened to me. I got hurt at my then job at Office Max (I was walking and one of my employees asked for help, so I quickly turned and I tore my ACL - obviously not the fault of the company), where I worked as a manager, in charge of sales, customer service and technology repairs.I had to take off a couple of weeks of work and it forced me to evaluate what I wanted to do with my life. I enjoyed most of my job, but I knew that to advance my career there, I would have to deal with more and more of what I did not enjoy (sales, I liked working with people, but hated having to deal with “did we make our numbers”), so I decided to change careers and go back to working with teenagers, only this time in teaching.I came back to work and talked to my friend and boss about this. I even turned in a letter of resignation effective for when my new teacher’s license would be effective in 6 weeks. He refused to take the resignation. And it was a good thing he did.The state ran into a problem. One of the questions asked on the background check was “Was I ever fired from a job in the last 10 years”. The answer was yes, I was fired from a juvenile detention center that I worked at 9 years before after giving a client the wrong medications and not realizing it for 12 hours (long after the policy of reporting a medical mistake within 2 hours). That company was contacted to verify my story and refused to tell the State anything other than “yes, I used to work there and I was ineligible to be rehired.” When the state asked why, they refused to answer. That company took 6 months of legal issues before I was finally able to at least get them to write a letter stating their refusal, which the state accepted a week later. By the time my license was actually granted, it was April with the school year ending in early May.If my boss hadn’t refused to accept my resignation, I would have had no job for almost a year. Now, I’m sure if I pushed the issue, he would have been required to accept it, but sometimes it’s nice to have someone you trust tell you that you are being foolish and should wait.Edit 11/28/19 - For those who say I did not answer the question or have been trying to add details to my answer in the comments. No, an employer cannot refuse to accept a resignation from an employee legally UNLESS there is a written contract in place that states they are required to work on a job until a certain task is done or a certain date. Even then, they could resign (or even just leave without notice if need be) from their job, they would just have to abide by what the contract says if that should happen (ex: can’t work for a direct competitor for length of original contract).2) The person who asked the original question is NOT talking about a slavery or involuntary servitude issue. The wording of the amendment was to prevent someone from forcing you to work for them in exchange for a service without a court order to do so. This used to be a common practice. See Jacob in the Bible being forced to work for 14 years to be allowed to marry the woman he loved, Rachel. Even in American history, many poor English men would come to America and agree to work for someone (without pay) for 3-7 years in exchange for them paying for the trip to come over, this amendment outlawed that practice. At no point did they say they would refuse to pay for the work she is doing. (Unless there are details missing from the question that were once there)3) It sounds more like they just do not want her to leave and would like to try to convince her to stay. If she is resigning due to a specific issue, maybe the refusal is more “I understand you are upset, can we set up a meeting with HR, with my boss, with (name of situation), etc. to discuss how to solve this problem before you officially resign.” That is absolutely legal. Or maybe your mother did not follow the procedure set forth in the employee handbook and all she needs to do is type up a formal letter to give to HR. Procedures are also legal. If this truly becomes an issue, then I would recommend using the link on the bottom that could offer some suggestions on how to make it less frustrating. How to Resign when Your Boss Refuses to Accept Your ResignationEdit 12/7/19 - This is going insane. 460 upvotes, 164 Thousands views.
