PDF Editor FAQ

How smart are the students at the bottom of schools like Harvard or MIT?

Historically, about 19–30% of Harvard undergraduates did not finish their degrees (dropouts and flunkouts)…until possibly the 1960s.…but it may not be because they were “less smart” (or had lower SAT scores).Or it could be. In the 2010s, Harvard still admits people with 413 SATs (out of 800).MIT also has their share of flunk-outs, drop-outs, and people on “infinite leave.”Google “Harvard” and “Happy Bottom Quarter” admissions. If someone is likely to be in the bottom of their class, they should be psychically capable of handling that situation. Admissions departments are well aware that some people can commit suicide when being in a situation they are unprepared for. When Harvard is admitting an athlete with lower academic skill, they try to answer “What will they do in school if they get injured? Will they still have a way to enjoy their college experience?”So who are these people? What are they like? What percentage are like Bill Gates and Mark Zuckerberg? Who perceived college as too challenging and collapsed? Who was kicked out for “sexual assault” or other improper behavior? Who developed a life-threatening illness (or even died during college)? Who was sent to war and came back with brain damage, PTSD, or something which prevented resumption of college studies? (Harvard actually issued special degrees to war veterans who finished most of college, but not all.) Who left due to financial reasons, or social reasons (unable to find friends, perhaps due to race, socioeconomic status, or personality style)?I would beware any answer which says generically “They are all smart” (e.g. simply by looking at SAT scores, or assuming they passed the admissions process).Listen to the answers which describe real people at the bottom of their class.Joseph Wang's answer to How smart are the students at the bottom of schools like Harvard or MIT?Reid Sheftall's answer to How smart are the students at the bottom of schools like Harvard or MIT?“The Administrative Board required six undergraduates to temporarily withdraw from the College for "social behavior" related to alcohol, drugs, or sexual activity in the 2016-2017 academic year, a slight increase from 2015-2016...The Ad Board also placed 22 total students on probation in 2016–2017—13 of them for social behavior”- Ad Board Required Six to Withdraw for 'Social Behavior' Last Year | News | The Harvard Crimson (11/7/2017)“The Ad Board formally disciplined 151 undergraduates in the 2001–2002 academic year. Thirteen students where required to withdraw for academic dishonesty. One was permanently dismissed for a second offense of academic dishonesty. Four students were required to withdraw for alcohol related offenses. One was required to withdraw for the second time for sexual misconduct. Seventy-seven students were admonished for liquor law violations, fifty-two were admonished for violations of academic procedures, and three were admonished for weapons violations.”- Amazon.com: The Truth About Harvard: A Behind the Scenes Look at Admissions and Life on Campus (College Admissions Guides) (9780375764356): Dov Fox: Books (2004), p. 176.- The Truth about Harvard (p.176 on Google Books)“More than 60 students enrolled in Computer Science 50: “Introduction to Computer Science I” last semester appeared before the College’s Honor Council in a wave of academic dishonesty cases that has stretched the Council to its limits over the past few months…The spate of cases represents roughly ten percent of the 636 total fall enrollees in Harvard’s flagship introductory computer science course…Last academic year, the Honor Council heard 115 total academic dishonesty cases, with a majority stemming from courses in the Sciences Division or the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences. The bevy of academic dishonesty cases in CS50 placed a heavy burden on the Honor Council, a body of roughly 30 students, faculty, and administrators that enforces Harvard’s Honor Code, according to the two individuals. The College rolled out the Honor Code, a policy that outlines Harvard’s standards for academic integrity, after a cheating scandal in a government course swept the College in 2012.At the time, one administrator called the pattern of cheating “unprecedented in anyone’s living memory,” and more than 120 students enrolled in Government 1310: “Introduction to Congress” eventually underwent investigation for academic dishonesty.”More than 60 Fall CS50 Enrollees Faced Academic Dishonesty Charges | News | The Harvard Crimson (5/3/2017)King’s “Study of Magnas, Summas, Flunk Outs, and Drop Outs - Classes of 1957 and 1958”…the New England private schools supply over 40% (187/463) of our flunk-outs and drop-outs, but less than 20% (68/344) or our magnas and summas…For Wilson, the implications were clear: Harvard should move expeditiously to eliminate the borrow 10 percent of the class.…the students who flunked out were by no means the ones with the lowest College Board scores but “tended to be slightly above the middle of the class in ability terms but were apt to have various psychoneurotic or personal problems.”And “if we were to eliminate all candidates showing neurotic tendencies,” he [Bender] argued, “we would probably eliminate a number of our Groups I’s as well as some of our drop-outs”.…According to Bender, the experience of the University of Chicago strongly suggested than “when one attempted to eliminate the 10% who are at the bottom of the academic scale but who have other wrong qualifications, one no longer got the academic top 10%.”What this meant in plain English was that even the academically brilliant preferred to attend an institution with social cachet - an element of Harvard’s historic atmosphere that would be lost without a critical mass of “gentlemen.”- The Chosen: The Hidden History of Admission and Exclusion at Harvard, Yale, and Princeton: Jerome Karabel: 0046442773553: Amazon.com: Books (2005), p. 270.“Graduation rate” has become a competitive metric for university bragging in the past few decades, so times have changed, and Harvard no longer has a 19–30% dropout/flunkout rate. Here’s the latest info I could find (1.7% for Class of 2013 after 8 years).Class of 2013 (first-time full-time): 4-yr 86%, 6-yr 97.5%, 8-yr 98.3% (About 27 people out of 1,600 without degrees as of 2017)- Graduation Rates | Harvard University (Univ Stats)…and older info.“In the 2003-2004 academic year, 166 students were placed on academic probation, and 32 students were required to withdraw from the College after academic review.”“During the 2002-2003 academic year, there were 1,055 requests for tutoring in 201 different courses, which added up to 5,709 hours of peer tutoring in total.”- How do you fail out of Harvard? (Harvard Crimson, 4/29/2004)Classes of 1957–58, 433 people dropped/flunked out. 28% (433/~2,400, two classes of ~1,200).- The Chosen: The Hidden History of Admission and Exclusion at Harvard, Yale, and Princeton: Jerome Karabel: 0046442773553: Amazon.com: Books (2005), p. 270.Class of 1938, 19% (192/1,035) never got degrees.Class of 1910, 27% (201/734).Class of 1900, 30% (215/720) temporary & special members.- Harvard Class Alumni Reports (1829–1927), The Online Books Page , The Online Books PageIf you read 1829–1927 alumni reports, there are huge sections devoted to “temporary members”, so 1829–1917 dropout/flunkout rate is easy to find.It was NEVER below 19% in any year I checked.Unfortunately most of the post-1917 alumni reports are not yet available on-line to the public - probably for privacy reasons for alumni & their families.—-If you like history, I highly recommend reading some of Harvard’s alumni reports at The Online Books Page.Stories are incredible. Pictures too. Sadly, no videos :-)One of my favorite pastimes at Harvard was visiting the Harvard Alumni Office and reading/viewing the old alumni reports in the reading room.

What is a good profile for getting an admission in ISB?

You carry average academics but you can add a spark to your profile if you can crack 720+ in your GMAT. Prepare well for your GMAT, take help from a well experienced GMAT tutor, google for tips to crack a good GMAT and also opt for test series like Kaplan, Manhattan and etc which will help you score good. After this you can receive an interview if you work on your profile and tailor your essays well. You can strengthen your profile by adding to your extra-curricular activities as also projecting yourself as a strategic and analytical thinker. This is because management graduates who can come up with new ideas are the one who can bring about disruption, and achieve extra-ordinary results.ISB has started looking at candidates with fewer years of work experience as well. Ever since they opened Mohali Campus, they are more keen on exploring candidates with wide range of work experiences. Moreover, the maturity of your expression is more important than the number of years of work experience. I am not demeaning the importance of work experience, but for ISB, 2+ years of work experience makes you eligible to get the interview. US b-schools look for value creators and innovators with outstanding leadership potential. So what matters is not what you are but how you project yourself. Here's your chance to interact with alumni from INSEAD, HEC Paris & ISB. Can I do an MBA at 28 considering my poor academics with 2 years of experience?

Thanks for A2A.Yes, you can do an MBA at the age of 28. The average age limit for most of the top B-Schools ranges from 27–29 years. But there are also other B-Schools which has average age criteria for up to 31 years. Age is not the factor if you are determined to do the MBA and have a shift in your career. Average age is compatible and if you do not fall in the age range mentioned by the B-Schools of your choice, you should not give up on those schools.Your academics is something that is written in stone and you cannot change it. Your academics along with your GMAT score is considered by the Adcom of the B-Schools to check whether you can handle the academic rigor. Considering the fact that your academics are poor, the optional essay can be a good place to address this and draft a convincing reason that affected your performance. Some of the B-Schools work experience ranges from 2–8 years but prefer an average work experience of more 4 years. So you are eligible in this factor. But, you need to understand a fact that it not the number of years you have worked for but the quality of performance you have rendered in the tasks/projects assigned to you. There are other factors you need to think about to compensate such as GMAT, LOR from both academics and professionals, strong extracurricular activities and very good convincing essays. If you can showcase yourself very strong in these factors then you can balance your profile. Remember your application needs to stand out and impress the Adcom so that it gets shortlisted among others and get an interview invite. Most schools either specify a minimum requirement for certain aspects, or they specify their flexibility when it comes to quality admissions. Admission is usually based on purely holistic criteria.Hope this was helpful!
