There is no prior military experience required to start down the road to becoming a SEAL. There are, however, several other requirements that have to be met before you can become a SEAL Challenge candidate. Earning a SEAL Challenge contract guarantees you the opportunity to become a SEAL candidate and entitles you to certain bonuses (currently $12,000 Join the Elite Community of US Navy SEALs : Navy.com) and benefits when you enlist.You must be a United States citizen to become a SEAL. No exceptions.If you are a civilian and you want to become a SEAL, your first step is to visit your local Navy recruiter. The recruiter will screen you to ensure that you qualify for basic Navy eligibility. To be considered for SEAL training you must be 18-28 years old (17 with parental permission).You will be asked questions about your education, age, citizenship, medical history and police background. You must not be under civil restraint, be a substance abuser nor have a pattern of minor convictions or any non-minor, misdemeanor, or felony convictions (waivers are granted depending on number and severity). If you haven’t already taken the full Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) test, you may be asked to take a practice ASVAB. The ASVAB is the test used to determine qualification for enlistment in the United States Armed Forces.When you go to the recruiter, be sure to bring: Your birth certificate, social security card, high school diploma, a 10-year history of places that you lived and the names and addresses of employers for whom you've worked. You’ll also need three personal references with names, phone numbers and addresses, as well as the addresses of people who can verify your three references information.If you meet entrance criteria for the Navy and do well on the ASVAB (ASVAB minimum requirements: SEAL - GS+MC+EI=165 or VE+MK+MC+CS=220), the recruiter will put you in contact with a regional Naval Special Warfare/Special Operations Mentor or coordinator. Your SEAL mentor will help guide you through SEAL specific requirements and help you train for your Physical Screening Test (PST). This test will determine if you can meet the minimum scores necessary to qualify for further training.** You will be expected to achieve a PST score much higher than the minimum in order to be considered among the best and most qualified SEAL candidatesYou will next have to obtain a Navy contract. Once you've signed your contract, you'll be in the Delayed Entry Program (DEP), and your mentor will put you on a physical training regimen designed to help you prepare for the PST. You must pass a PST within sixty days of starting the delayed entry program (you must pass this to continue in the program). Your contract will have a boot camp date on it. That date will probably change though when you get a SEAL Challenge contract.If you have not already taken the ASVAB, your recruiter will schedule an opportunity for you to take the test. He’ll also schedule you to receive a physical exam and a background screening at a Military Entrance Processing Station (MEPS). You must pass the physical examination required for divers. Your physical will include drug testing, providing a medical history, checking your range of motion as well as your eyesight and hearing. Eyesight Requirements: Uncorrected vision in the better eye can be no worse than 20/70, the worse eye no more than 20/100. Both eyes must be correctable to 20/20. Color deficiencies require approval to continue with the selection process.After your ASVAB and physical, you may have to wait to receive a SEAL Challenge contract. During your wait time you'll be allowed to take the C-SORT and PST. The C-SORT, or Computerized-Special Operations Resiliency Test, is an online test recruits will take at the recruiter’s office. It is created to assess a future SEAL recruit’s ability to handle stress. It is designed to assess a recruit’s abilities in the areas of:Performance strategies – The use of stress coping tools such as self-talk, breathing, and goal setting abilities are tested in this section.Psychological resilience - How a recruit deals with stressful and unpleasant situations as well as mental challenges and threats will also be tested in this section.Personality traits – This section is mainly used for statistical analysis. There are many personality traits that make it through SEAL training.The C-SORT is graded on a scale of one to four (1 to 4). If you score a 4 on the C-SORT you are considered to have a high resiliency level.**Note: A recruit can only take the C-SORT one time.Once you have taken and passed at least three competitive PSTs, your recruiter or mentor will submit your entire application package to Navy Recruiting Command. If selected, you will receive an offer for a SEAL Challenge contract. You will need to pass an additional PST 14 days before boot camp in order to keep that contract.Next it is off to Navy Recruit Training Command in Great Lakes, IL for a 12-week boot camp. After boot camp, you will attend an advanced workout program at Great Lakes that will prepare you for BUD/S.Keep in mind that this is all the easy stuff.
