I really don't know what a nocturnal, net-savvy person like me would have done otherwise !Lenient Hostel Policies - You can enter/leave the campus/your hostel at any time of the day(or night). One can also visit the hostels/rooms of the people of opposite gender (except between 12-6 AM).Only BTech/BS Admissions in UGs - This is a recent reform and one that I feel is really commendable. We admit UG students only for four year programmes initially. One can convert to a dual degree programme at a later point. I guess there is some explanation needed as to why I consider this to be a 'freedom'. It is way too early after 12th to decide whether you want a Masters degree in your discipline. Unlike the other IITs, IIT Kanpur doesn't force a kid out of high school (having nearly no idea of how strong his interest in the department is) to make that choice. We give them the freedom to make that decision when they are ready. (Similar arguments can be made for making students choose departments just after JEE. But since that is irrelevant to this question, I'll not go there !)Dual Major Degree (and Minors) - Another recent reform. Many IITs (including IITK) will allow you to get a minor in another department. Something unique to IIT Kanpur is that it lets you go one step further and gives you the freedom to obtain a major degree in two departments (one of them being the department you initially admitted into).For the benefit of the non-IIT readers, I'll also mention some of the very fundamental freedoms/rights that I didn't mention in detail as they that are common across most IITs (including IITK obviously) - flexibility in course template in form of electives, student participation in all decisions, nearly autonomous conduction of festivals/competitions/orientation, myriad of activities/interests to pursue etc.
