Blerp.Disclosure — the only reason I’m answering this question is because it’s weirdly related to life for me right now.Career help.So I have been seeking out Career help because I’m in Career Hell. Friends, I have been turned down as a sales associate by the last goddamn Big Box retailer I can handle.So, I’m getting my resume rewritten professionally and my LinkedIn profile, too.In any case I was talking career stuff with an older person who ended up being a jackass and he was so earnest and stunned when he said, “You’re brilliant. Just brilliant.” And I have my boxed, polite response, “Thank you for the compliment.”And he stared at me and said, “NO. I mean you’re fucking smart. Like off the charts smarts.”And I said, “Well, I appreciate that, but I need to find a way to start my career and get a job. Potential means nothing if it’s not acted on by an outside force — that’s just a law of physics. What warm leads do you have for me?”Of course, none. He was just kind of wanting to talk to a cute woman and used his past banking experience to make it seem reasonable that he could get me a job or something. Next.Then, 2 days ago, I’m sitting in a friend’s family room. His family is hilarious. His step-dad is a veteran and his mom is a former lawyer who worked in DC. And I replied to some joke (they’re a super talkative family and they LOVE to tell these like clever, brain-tickling type jokes…well…that and dirty jokes).His dad, usually a person you can’t stop talking much less pausing, smiled, leaned in, and said, “You are brilliant. You know that, though.”.I said, “Thank you for the compliment!”.And the conversation went on.So all that’s happened.I’m trying to make my way into fashion merchandising and business. Like, what the fuck?Everyone keeps telling me I’m smart, but I’m not feeling it. I have to find a way to leverage whatever they’re seeing into what I’d like to do.I rarely “feel” smart. I don’t try to outwit people, and usually shoot the breeze. There’s got to be something people pick up on with it though.I don’t personally care if I’m an idiot. I need to be gainfully employed and start my career in the direction I want it to go.I would appreciate someone saying, “Listen, you’re kind of a moron, but we will let you have this entry position that impacts the business very little, so even if you fuck up from your dumbness it won’t matter.”. Because I’d make my position relevant, etc.But so the search continues!

A2AA big deal in which sense - impressive or useful?If you have an official result from one of the standard intelligence tests accepted by Mensa that places you in the 98th percentile, then you qualify. Mensa also regularly offers its own proctored test.This is not particularly impressive to people in academic or technical circles, and you'll look insecure if you ever mention it or put it on a resume. Members themselves joke that Mensa is "the K-Mart [a large discount retail chain - a precursor of Walmart] of IQ societies," there being of number of more selective - albeit too small and dispersed to offer much by comparison - groups, such as Triple Nine (99.9th percentile).Forget about impressing anyone.The real benefit of joining Mensa is social. If your intelligence has isolated you, as it does for many, then you may find companionship. To quote my answer to What is Mensa like? :Mensa is primarily about combating the isolation to which intelligence too often leads, offering a way to meet a variety of other bright people, outside a competitive setting and your particular specialty. There are lots of parties at members' houses, as well as regular regional, national, and international gatherings, with lots of stimulating conversation - not, as a rule, indecently cerebral or especially learned, but just sharper than usual, and on any subject - with people of all sorts on a level field of automatic, guaranteed, mutual respect, regardless of differences in background that might ordinarily hinder contact. There is indeed the larger than usual complement of quirky and awkward characters which Mensa's detractors like to emphasize, but the tolerance this involves is precisely what lends it, for many, such a refreshing and congenial authenticity.

When I was growing up, people always told me I was smart. They weren't wrong. As an example, when I was in 7th grade my parents had me take the ACT (college standardized testing) for fun and as a diagnostic, and even without special preparation my scores would have gotten me into nearly any college in the country.Fast-forward 5 years and I'm going to college at a small liberal arts school, good academics but hardly elite. Maybe you could say that my intelligence should have allowed me to go to a better school, but it was where I wanted to go. Overall I still think it was the right decision.Fast forward 2 years. You would think my intelligence should allow me to dominate academically like I did in high school, but in actuality I'm struggling with anxiety and depression and my GPA has slipped below a 3.0, costing me one academic scholarship. I'm lucky to have a really supportive group of friends, who befriended me for reasons that have next to nothing to do with whatever intelligence I might possess.Fast forward 2 more years. I've graduated college and am looking for a job. My anxiety has kept me from finding relevant summer internships and getting work experience and my GPA and resume are unspectacular. It takes me 6 months to find a full-time job, during which time I'm working two part time jobs in fast food and retail. The only thing my intelligence is doing me is making me even more frustrated with my part-time jobs that I've been led to believe are beneath me.6 months later: present day. I got a job through someone my parents knew who was willing to give me a chance. On paper it's a great opportunity but I feel frustrated and often find myself with little to do, and so I'm sitting on Quora writing this answer. Hardly intellectually rigorous.Relationships with other people are not dependent on intelligence, but they're what get you places in life. Effort and humility allow you to shine when given the opportunity. Intelligence amplifies the effects of those qualities but is a poor substitute for them on its own. Yet too often we place intelligence on a pedestal.Don't worry about being smart--you can do just about anything in this life without a genius IQ. Especially don't worry about feeling smart--that feeling is only meant to be a temporary affirmation that motivates you to tackle questions that you don't know the answers to you that make you feel dumb again. If you constantly feel smart and in control as if you know it all, you probably aren't challenging yourself enough.
