What are some of the must know tips for college students?

All these tips are based from my experience. I hope my list helps you in a way.Find your way around the campus early on- I got this tip from my mother when I was a freshman. If it’s okay with you, you can visit the campus a week before class starts. That way, you won’t get lost on the day your classes start. Personally, I’ve seen freshmen come to class late because they could not find their way around the campus.Take the time to explore some parts of the campus (other than classrooms)- I used to explore my college during my free time. It’s a fun way to kill some time and to get some exercise. Through that, I was able to discover places where I can be at peace with myself. Also, I was able to learn where the broadcasting room was located (although never once have I stepped foot there).Write down your class schedule- You can note down your schedule physically or digitally. I’m sure you will not forget your classes again. Well, I hope so.Make friends/acquaintances- Another tip I received from my mother. You can get their contact details. Let’s say you were absent and you missed a lecture. Oh no! The best solution is to ask a friend or an acquaintance on what you have missed during class. That’s what I do. Being an introvert, it was a difficult task. In the end, it was all worth it. Before I forget, I would like to tell you that you will lose people along the way.Be a “detective”- Especially when it comes to professors. As a class, we used to ask other people on how a certain instructor grades a student. I commonly hear questions such as:How does she grade?Does she give high grades?Who’s he? Is he a good instructor? How does he act? What are her examinations like? Essay or identification? These kinds of questions surfaced as I advanced in college. It was helpful in mentally preparing myself of what is yet to come. It can be a curse or a blessing.I hope you will have good professors. Ask seniors or fellow acquaintances if they know the instructor.6. Be careful- Be careful on who you are friends with. Some of them might be involved in vices or dubious activities. Surely, you don’t want to be surrounded by bad influence. Choose your friends wisely.7. Use the library- Maximize it! Borrow some books for recreational and academic purposes. There are sources you can use for supplementing your lectures and your research. Of course, don’t forget to have a good time in the library :)8. Make use of Google Docs and etc.- Ah yes! My savior during college days! Nostalgia aside, Google apps are useful in group work, or when you cannot meet your classmate for school work because of a conflict in schedule. Oh! It’s okay to use social media, but don’t let it distract you too much.9. Prepare for surprises- Oh no! Especially surprise quizzes! Some professors love this, so it’s best if you study just in case they “surprised” you. It’s also not bad to read in advance.10. Take down notes- You will need it for tests and recitations. Don’t forget to organize them.11. Read and understand- Goodness gracious! I used to memorize facts, but then I realized that I did not learn anything. I took up International Studies… really, I could not memorize everything. I made some adjustments. It was difficult at first, but I managed to transform my study habit as understand to memorize. It was effective!12. Participate in recitations- My mom said that I have to recite in class so that my professors will know me. It was effective because I can get additional points for talking and contributing to the lecture. Try not to be afraid, okay? Just do it!13. Widen your interests- Thanks to my course, I became interested in politics and international relations. They’re fun to read! Then, I started to like non-fiction books. Who knows? You might discover something that you like during your stay in college.14. Get some sleep- My mother keeps badgering me to go to bed whenever I have to stay up late. Most of the time, I sleep early. However, there was this one instance when I only had three or four hours of sleep. I was busy working with my classmates. I’ve never been so dizzy and groggy in my whole life. Try to get 6–8 hours of sleep if you can.15. Watch your health- This is self-explanatory.16. Try not to procrastinate on your school requirements- Manage your work load! Come on, you can do it!17. Accept failure- I used to rage (privately) whenever I scored a failing grade on a test. It hurts, but I have to accept the reality. I passed and failed some tests. What I’m trying to say is: Step up the game and do better next time!18. Enjoy- College is not supposed to be solely about writing essays or creating presentations. It’s also about having fun (albeit not excessively)! Go out with your friends to the mall, eat at a restaurant, or attend a seminar together. It’s up to you. If you are not with your friends, you can treat yourself to a cup of coffee, hot chocolate, or tea. Also, good memories are made when you take advantage of opportunities.College is going to be a wild ride. Enjoy it while it lasts because the career world is a whole new battlefield, and it’s tougher than college.

How do I get into UIUC computer science if I have an offer for business?

I have successfully transferred from business to Engineering CS. Let me share my story to complement Jeff Erickson ‘s more pessimistic answer.Short answer: maintain a good GPA (ideally 4.0 technical) while taking as many CS and math courses as you can.Long story: When I applied to universities I only applied to business schools, thinking that I would want to do quantitative finance in the future. For various reasons I decided to transfer to another major at the end of freshmen year. By then I have only taken 1 CS course (CS 125) and no math courses aside from Calc I (which I took the proficiency exam for) and elementary linear algebra ( the degree of lack of content of the class cannot be described ). I was trying to decide between transferring into Math or CS. The math department thought it was impossible for me to transfer into math given my background, but the CS department was more welcoming and gave me a chance. I remember someone at the academic office told me that if I get good grades in core CS classes or demonstrate my ability in CS otherwise it’s possible for me to transfer into CS. I took Calc II, Calc III and Physics 211(Kinetic Physics) in the summer and got A+/A in all of them. My sophomore year first semester I took CS225(data structures), CS 173(discrete math), Math 416 (linear albegra), Physics 212(electrical & magnetics), and some general education class that fulfilled 3 of my requirements. I got A+/A in all of them. At the end of the semester I submitted a request to transfer to CS, and the request was approved before my winter break was over.I am by no means very smart, and have never done programming before college. Everything comes down to planning, having a great group of people who also wanted to transfer to CS, and actually enjoying Math & CS.Planning for GPA: It is possible to artificially increase GPA by correct planning. To me a 4.0 Technical GPA(at least in lower level classes) is engineered, not left by chance at all. If you figure out the formula, you have 90% chance of getting it.-Course planning:Try to take at most 2 classes per semester where you are not comfortable with the material. (I had a decent background in Math & Physics. The only classes that I was not comfortable with my sophomore year first semester was my general education—aka writing—and CS225 a programming class) Look at material for previous semesters online. Start with Calc II instead of Calc III if you the Calc II questions from previous semester challenge you, even if you have AP credit for Calc II. You are much safer with both GPA and foundation in continuous math that way. Proficient out of Physics 211 and 212/use AP credit if you are not super into Physics. Material from these classes are rarely used in CS. For classes that are required but you are likely to get a B in, take the summer course version instead, it is easier. (Do NOT do this after you transfer in, remember it’s only a temporary strategy and not conductive to learning)-Getting into CS classes:Use automatic seat opening reminder/registration apps. If you didn’t get the seat in the class (which is likely the case), add yourself to the waitlist if there is one. Even if you don’t get into a class, go to class and take HW very seriously. In my experience everyone who truly try to get into a class get in eventually. Majority of the people WILL give up after 2 weeks or at least before the first midterm. Professor will try to scare you at the beginning of class that if you are not in this class yet you better not have any hope. However you must be strong and not give in. Maintain a good relationship with course staff. Demonstrate you are actually good at this. It’s possible priority will be given to people who have completed every single assignment so far.-Lower Level Class A Strategy:Lower level classes tend to have much more points allocated for things like attendance, homework, i-clicker, pre-lecture, etc. If you get full mark on all this nonsense, you will have much more leeway for mistake on exams. Make sure you schedule enough time for each HW so that you can go to office hour if you get stuck. Mark ddl on your calendar so you don’t miss any of them. Check and double check your HW solution with friends. Always attend lecture and sit next to friends so you can discuss i-clicker solution.Make sure you go through class material at least once per week. Try to understand it beyond the hw/class requirement. E.g. in a math class professor went through a proof, HW requires only computation. Go through the proof and understand it regardless. This will minimize time spent wasted in class/hw because you don’t understand something and will maximize exam score. For exams, prepare 4 days in advance for Midterms and 1 day in advance for Quizzes if possible. Go over all material in class, then do the practice exams. Note the areas you are weakest in/areas that have the most question in. Contribute to google doc for practice exam solution if you have time.**Time your practice exams, make sure you can complete it in 3/4 time of the actual exam and get at most 15% incorrect given harshest grading to self. This will give you time to double check solution/not freak out when encountering hard problem in actual exam. In exam, skip hard questions and come back to them at the very end.-CS Class Taboo ComboDo NOT take CS126 (programming studio) together with CS225(data structures), or CS225 with CS233(computer architecture), or worse, CS233 with CS241(systems programming), as it surely will end disastrously. CS126 requires writing a LOT of code. CS225 requires a lot of time to understand concepts and do the MPs. CS233 and CS225 now have biweekly quizzes. CS241 is brutally time consuming with 1 MP and 1 lab per week (prepare for >15–20 h time commitment per week). CS374(algorithms) is not as time consuming but requires lots of thinking.Recommended schedule:1Fall: CS125, CS173 1Spring CS1262Fall: CS225 2Spring: CS233 OR CS241 OR CS374. (If you still haven’t transferred at 2Spring, take CS374 only if you are confident in your proof based math ability)Many freshmen who fail to transfer into CS were very ambitious and took too many challenging courses per semester. Sometimes this results in bad GPA in technical courses. Since admission is so competitive in CS, 1 B in Math/CS courses could be the end of the transfer plan.Have Friends: Make friends with people who are also trying to transfer. Make friends with people in class who have much more experience in CS than you. Talk to CAs and TAs (especially in CS225), they may have been transfers themselves and can offer advice. Friends in the department can be great emotional support in the trying times of transferring. Having people to debug together, be anxious together, and freak out in Siebel basement for exams together makes the situation much less hopeless.Enjoy the work: Even if trying to transfer to CS can be very stressful, try to enjoy in the learning process. Remember why you wanted to transfer and your initial love for the subject. Maybe because I never dreamed of doing CS before, everything was an eye-opening experience for me. How to communicate with the computer via terminals. How to implement a balanced binary search tree and maintain its height to be O(log n). How B-tree is optimized for disk read and writes. How some problems are NP-hard. Everything was fascinating to me. As a result I was willing to put in any amount of work because it was actually enjoyable to learn CS. If you have not programmed before, I hope you find the same fascination with CS as me. If you are already skilled in programming, you must have enjoyed it already if you want to transfer!Kudos to supportive department: One thing I discovered about the CS department is that the grading method was way gentler than ECE department. In CS225 I have never gotten more than 90% on my midterms or finals. However I still managed to get an A. The MPs was a large percentage of the grade and more than 10% of extra credit was available if you submit MPs early and do all the labs. There are TAs and CAs to help you with MP or conceptual questions from morning to 11pm. My Professor Cinda Heeren was extremely supportive as well. Before the midterm she told us it was “not a life or death situation” (By then I just messaged my friends “life and death midterm tomorrow, wish me good luck”). CS225 was one of the classes where if you put int the efforts to understand the material and completing the MPs, you will get a good result (because MP and labs are such a great component of grading). I think the same is true for CS233 and CS241.Good Luck!! It’s not impossible with some planning!!Disclaimer: The requirements and chances of getting into CS may have changed over years. I successfully transferred to CS in my sophomore year 2 years ago, back then 4.0 technical GPA, 3.9 overall with >=CS225 CS experience = successful transfer.EDIT: Apparently the rules have changed. People from other colleges have to apply to pre-engineering program before applying to an engineering major nowadays. Want to Change Your Major Considering the extra huddle with engineering college it might be worth considering Math+CS or Stats+CS in the college of LAS instead. The time has indeed changed. Ah this is the type of times that makes you realize you are old.
