I can write a book on this question alone.I was with a man who lead a double life for almost twenty-five years. I found out about the true nature of his and he being friends with a woman in another state when she sent me a draft of his obituary and called herself his life partner. I was listed as a friend. This man was well regarded professor and knew plenty of people in the New York Community. My mom being one of them.He cultivated the perfect life. He was a snowbird he would winter with me and then summer in the north. He controlled all the information. For me, who is inquisitive, he gave me false information such as she has a boyfriend and the same thing to her about me. He actually said I was engaged to a friend at work. There was a lot of control in the relationship. When I thought to go out on my own to work freelance he convinced me to work locally with a company. This so I would be anchored away from New York State.He compartmentalized all his friends and estranged his brother and his family. It appeared he had healthy connections. He seemed to almost be someone different with each group. From what I pieced together at least. There were people I met at his funeral who I would ask if they would hang out with another of his group and they responded with “I really don’t know them.”Most of this came out over months after he died and she and I had to deal with his estate. Crazy. Both women on his estate. She at first blamed me. I received her therapy hurt letter that should have gone to him. In another question along this line (about a mistress who shows up at a husband’s funeral) she and I perhaps saw each other as the other woman. Needless to say this was earth shattering.Almost five years from the day he died I believe no one knew the real man. Though we had gotten an inkling when a friend of his and I corresponded. This friend knew him growing up. This friend had a diary and my “partner” wrote an introduction to this diary. In it he said that women were second class men at best. The only way to deal with women is that they should be wrapped in an illusion. He wrote that it is okay to think this way because in the end (I am thinking the end of life) it does not matter what you do.

I think you should write a friendly letter. Start with your background and achievements, and state your research interests. Then acknowledge the department and its research projects, pinning down the work and faculty that best match your interests. Finally, show your enthusiasm for potential future collaborative work, and how your presence contributes to the department's growth. Be humble and acknowledge that you have much to learn in a developed department, as you have probably just finished your preliminary research project(s).
