What the Canadians and the Mexicans “conceded” to were mild revisions of the North American Free Trade Agreement, that allowed for modifications of the percentages of content manufactured in North America to avoid tariffs. Did you get that subtle point? Supply chains are now global, so everyone had to agree on whether the end product was North American. Not Made in the USA. Made in North America. The best part of this “new” deal: US manufacturers were already working under those provisions. No change. Why do you think that American companies were relieved when they discovered its terms?Here’s the best part, though: Congress has a lot of problems with this deal, on both sides of the aisle. Don’t be shocked if it crashes and burns.As to China, the Chinese have conceded nothing at all. They “promised” to buy more American agriculture and manufactures, but that doesn’t mean anything. They can get that from Argentina. No tariffs in Argentina, and no mercurial president to alter his policies on a whim, a wing and a prayer.The Chinese also promised to negotiate further. That’s “promised”. To negotiate. They made no concessions. Just like the North Koreans “promised” to be good, made no concessions, and increased their nuclear weapons production while Trump was pathetically strutting around preening for a Nobel Prize because Barack Obama has one.If the stock market responded positively to the news that Trump and Xi agreed to a truce, that was the only reason. The market responded to the news that Trump wasn’t going to levy even more stupid and senseless tariffs on Chinese goods, which are often components of American manufacturing. Apple’s iPhones will be cheaper in January not because the Chinese are buying more. They will be cheaper in January because they will be avoiding the Trump imposed tariff — which you pay, by the way, not the Chinese.So, we are still in a trade war, of course, because Trump didn’t remove the Mexican or Canadian tariffs in spite of this renegotiated NAFTA, and there are still tariffs on hundreds of billions of dollars of Chinese imports, while everyone — including the Europeans — is still retaliating against America for this asinine and pointless “policy”. Even if the Mexican, Canadian, and Chinese “agreements” ended the trade war, how would you make up for all that lost business the trade war has caused American farmers and other exporters? Or had you forgotten about that? I’m pretty sure they haven’t.Now that I have cleared up these misconceptions for you, are you beginning to understand Trump’s “trade war” a little better? If you supported this imbecile for president, are you beginning to understand a little better why most of the country doesn’t?
