PDF Editor FAQ

What are the scientific reasons behind the home advantage enjoyed by sports teams?

If home cooking and sleeping in your own bed qualify as scientific, well there you go.More environmental than scientific can be the surface of a playing field. With different types of grass seed growing only in certain regions due to weather conditions. The ball will perform differently when rolling or bouncing at ground level. Some grasses require increased watering to maintain firmness and color while other grasses in warmer regions are maintained to grow higher and thinner to provide their own shade to avoid drought. Some athletes will wear different types of athletic shoes depending on what type of surface they will compete atop.American Football, Baseball, and Soccer players will wear three different types of athletic shoes playing on three separate fields all within the same city on the same day. The outer shoe or boot may look similar from above, but underneath the shoes are manufactured differently to perform at peak for all three different athletes and their individual sport.Football and Soccer players use a similar design with a molded and taller rubber, plastic or polyurethane types of knobs affixed to the bottom of their lightweight footgear. Called cleats these knobs allow for ground traction and good footing, which is vital in both sports rain or shine.Equipment managers face an on-going battle to have the right type of shoe set-up with the correct knob or cleat available on the right day in all kinds of different weather. And I’m not so sure the club with the home-field advantage is gonna go out of their way, providing a heads-up to any opponents they meet in competition and in the comforts of their home fieldThe same goes for Baseball as well, where the actual dimensions of any ballpark are going to be different from one park to the next to the next. Not affecting a player's footing but affecting where his footing can take him. Utilizing a few different designs of cleats and the materials that make up the knobs and cleats affixed to the underside of a variety of different baseball shoes. The first choice of most baseball players is to wear metal cleats or what are called Spikes in the world of baseball terminology. Spikes are (real) metal plates mounted under the athlete's shoe. Small machined tabs (if you will) are about the width of a cigarette filter protruding downward away from the foot and cut or edged to break the surface of the ground when playing on both surfaces of a baseball field. The outfield always will be a pitch of grass from one foul line completely to the other foul line where the grass usually gives way to a dirt surface about 6 to 10 feet wide called a warning track. That track rightfully named warns a ballplayer when he ha become close to a fence or wall that bounds the playing field from foul grounds. The way it should work for the game and players is when a fielder on defense runs off the grass surface and steps upon the dirt warning track surface he should feel it when that first step onto the track is no longer grass. What the warning will not do is slow a player's momentum, that is up to him to recognize the warning. From here it is the ball's flight pattern a player's foot speed, the make-up of the fence or wall and most importantly the desire of one's effort to complete the play, making the catch or not regardless of the outcome with him contacting a surrounding fence. Momentum gives way to most well-structured walls and can stop a hustling defender in his tracks. One shining example of mine came in Seattle WA. at the A.S.A. Men’s Western C Divison World Championship. Returning to play 5 months after reconstructive ankle surgery held much to say about if the surgery or how the surgery will affect my play then and in the future. 23 years-old in my second year of competitive play there was doubt. To add to the uncertainty of a complete recovery is I will be asked to play out of position at 2nd Base and move to the outfield. A handful of team workouts prior to the 3-day Labor Day Tournament would be the initial test for my ankle as well as how I was to adjust to the move defensively. Baserunning was to be on a look, see and feel basis. We qualified in early March for this tournament. Had the tourney been held the very next weekend our overall outcome would have been better than the 3–2 won-lost record and 17th place finish that took us home. One-by-one the team that qualified began to drop from action for different reasons. As I watched my team struggle my return became my own personal challenge to get back to where I was physically before the surgery. Holding back and following strict orders from my Ortho Surgeon as well as my ex’s reminders to be patient (she knew it was killing me to sit-out for so long) the team would play on and I would stay away.As I went through and completed a detailed time-lined rehab with training staff from a local well-known professional NBA franchise I was cleared in mid -August to play. Two weeks to prepare mostly on my own pushing myself to work through any discomfort while ignoring the pain. Not one single pain killer was taken after the first week of surgery. I would later take Cortazone injections on an as-needed basis but not before playing in Seattle. At my first team workout two weeks before Labor Day I had to be re-introduced to my team. With injuries, divorce, and non-commitment from guys that made up the team back in March when we qualified had its effects and changed the line-up considerably. The outfield was impacted the most. This is why I was moved to the pasture, coming up with this club I had to prove myself at 20–21 years old that I could compete at their division of play. I did that and replaced the incumbent 2nd baseman. He would stick with the club while going through his own rehab after breaking his lower leg a year-and-a-half earlier. Taking over the logistics necessary to keep this team together. This club could dream and that is what it seemed like it was the year we played together before qualifying for Seattle. In the future, I would not play on a team with as much speed, support, fans, family, friends and an uncanny ability to come back from any deficit against any team anywhere to win a ballgame. As a player just knowing and being a part of the reason how we did it over and over was a huge confidence builder in a young and newest member of an established ballclub. I was fortunate to be a part of it so young.Off the field, this team had a “dream” that all of us would travel to Amsterdam to enjoy the local customs of the people while playing for a World Championship. We had fun and with a 3rd Baseman (RIP) who was as funny as they come, we laughed as a team consistently. But also lost was our best all-around player, best athlete, No. 3 hitter and outstanding defensive Pitcher. When you have all that in one man and then you lose him your team will suffer and ours was no exception. His wife basically told him if he continued to playball in Arizona, Seattle or anywhere else including the Netherlands she would file for divorce. The disease cut him off in May. I would later play Sand Volleyball and watch my former teammate take down the league with his athleticism. We would lose our power-hitting 1st Baseman out of Western Michigan due to a freak off-field accident in late July. For a Big Man, he could play some stingy defense as well. His majestic towering home runs would surely be missed. There was more but not as significant. What was more would be the money that our gimpy leader was able to acquire from sponsorship both our main sponsor and a recently added big money contributor would make Seattle a comfortable, fun and rewarding experience. An experience that would personally drive me afterward and serve as a mark I had seen, heard, smelled and touched in The Emerald City. Two things were established on this journey. One, our leader drained the team account as we enjoyed his generosity over four days. At one point letting us know this tourney would be our last together. The team was older than I was by more than three years and with an obvious depletion of talent he felt to acquire enough youth and experience at the same time and before the start of the next season was too much to get done. This the team that could dream could not awake from the funk that had overshadowed us for the previous 5 months. Two, I would be looking to play with a new ballclub. Suddenly a feeling of trepidation came over me, but with bigger fish to fry regarding my ankle and more so with the Tournament I was involved in it was placed on a back burner.Arriving in Seattle I’m anxious to play so playing in the outfield and not at 2nd Base I mentally tossed aside and all my focus was on my ankle and the beautiful surroundings of Seattle. Playing at three different softball facilities in three days allowed us to see it all. The 166-Team World Tournament required many fields and included one I will never forget. Day 2 had us playing at the base of Mt. Ranier, the entire pre-game and some during the game was taking in the visual effect that Ranier provided.Day One in Tukwilla WA. For me, pre-game warm-ups had me throwing, playing catch on the outfield grass. Immediately I realized how much footing is going to be a factor. Washington notorious for its greenery and rain output on a yearly basis provides its outfield playing surfaces thick, lush and green grasses. I have with me two pair of footgear to play in. A pair of white Nike Keystones with the conventional baseball style of cleat attached underneath. Replacing metal spikes like I wore when playing baseball were plastic polyurethane cleats molded to the shoe, my choice when playing on dirt as an infielder. The other pair are my navy blue Nike All-Purpose Softball Shoe that I received with my Work League team after winning a season championship. Before the 4th inning of the first game, I had tried them both while playing in the outfield making a decision that my Keystones will allow for the better footing.Daily sometimes twice a day my new ankle would be surrounded by me taping up as I was taught at rehab back in Phoenix. Before warming up I would remove a Lightweight Air-Supported Cast that I was using as a precaution. Then I would place under my sock over the pre-wrap a fiber lined inner shoe ankle wrap that did everything but cut off blood and oxygen to my brain. Tight was the feeling really tight. We learned a lot in the first game and more with game two. Defensively I was slow to pivot while turning to go back on a ball hit deep to my left playing right-center field. The thick grass alone slowed everyone’s foot speed and mine had become deliberately slowed due to caution. I had been told by teammates to take it easy we need you healthy for three days and they would rather have me slow than not at all. The word slow just has a bad sound to it and was not applied to my game before the surgery back in March. I played like I had not played before. I had become cautious without immediate reaction based on my instinct to anticipate where I needed to be and it bothered me mentally. The ankle held up well and better than expected. Baserunning on day one was okay and my activity on the bases was reduced by using our alotted “courtesy runner” a first for me. When slow was suggested to me earlier having a bad ring to it, I was now kinda pissed that I was using a “runner.” I was straightened out by one of my mentors and teammates when he said: “none of the Big Boys are getting on base so we are wasting this guy who we brought with us to run for them.” He was absolutely right. So I had to get over it and move on.1–1 we win the first one before losing in game two.Day Two at Mt. Ranier shows me even a thicker pitch than the day before in Tukwilla, add a swirling wind and I’m thinking don’t hit it to me. We win and advance to the final day. Later that night I and a teammate decide to check out the Seattle nightlife which seemed harmless as we added to this feeling by having a couple of beers and then talking ourselves into getting back to the hotel knowing that we play mid-morning. Just thinking about that now was out of character for both of us.Day Three Kent WA starts with the team and what wives and girlfriends made the trip collectively piling into four different vehicles. I don’t know if one of the rental cars was stolen, lost or broke down. The first two days I did not recall being as cramped as we were that morning. With Kent being close by our hotel we head out. Sitting in the rear-facing far back seat of a small station wagon I find myself wedged between our catcher a former Central Michigan football player and our 3rd Baseman and funny man we called “Moose” we did not call him that because he smelt like a moose more so because he was as big as a moose. Our catcher in no way was the smallest man on his football team to boot. Sitting sorta half-sideways and coming up for air every few seconds we discuss the end of… no, not a dynasty but the end of a great run for the three of us. As the vehicle mildly navigates towards the ballpark we are tossed about when our vehicle, the lead car in a procession of four passes through a small adulation in the road. With our three personal ballbags of gear loaded directly over our heads and not secured on the roof of the small wagon, they are lifted as one before returning to the roof sounding like the Space Needle had toppled over and on to our vehicle. Scaring our pilot enough to pull over on a slow Monday morning Labor Day commute, followed by the rest of the convoy. We gather ourselves after a brief moment with an attitude adjustment while checking the tires. Do I have to tell you that attitude adjustment and tire check are code words for well let’s just call it “pleasure travel” or “travel pleasure” I’m not sure because we always used the two other terms when we wanted to have some fun. Before we knew it while forgetting all about how we almost lost our gear we arrive at the Softball Complex with its four pristine manicured softball diamonds. Colorful additives such as banners and bunting have been added to the already beautiful look.As we are directed and lead to a pre-determined warm-up location a tall wooden green outfield fence enclosing Field No. 4 can not be overlooked. So tall at about 20 feet high it gives off a stadium feel or vibe. Both days prior the homerun fencing was made of conventional chain-link standing no taller than what we were used to back home and for the most part anywhere else.As I warm up, I kinda have one eye on the ball while the other wants to maintain vision with that giant green fence as if it were a giant green monster poised to attack. I am feeling a bit looser all the way around as I finish stretching, running and throwing. For two days and three games, it had been difficult to shake off my ring rust not having played in a game in five months, leaving me with a severe feeling of just being tight everywhere. With the effects of our pit stop still lingering I take off for one final sprint down the left-field line. Before turning around I continue to slowly walk with my back to the field. I was convincing myself to block out everything associated with my new ankle and needing to play in the outfield. (I knew I was a much better 2nd Baseman than I was an Outfielder). Also reminding myself, we lose and we are done. With me feeling looser and better I really wanted to play more than just one game that day. I had waited patiently for way too long missing the game while at rehab. What I was feeling was I knew how much of an impact I had when playing at my normal position when everything was in place for this team. Normal pitcher, normal first-baseman and normal me at second base. Pitcher and First baseman were out of the picture, but I was there. I knew right then I wanted to have an impact on my club.I wanted to do two things I encourage my players to do now when I’m Coaching. One when facing adversity like a tough and favored opponent to have a personal impact on that game on that day. Having anyone that was paying attention take notice you were there, by making a play that extends yourself beyond any play you have ever made. I also add that even if you don’t get the out your effort shall go unnoticed. And two is simple to play your ass off on game day.I never had to tell myself this before and only remember doing the first thing upon doing it. As I stated earlier when I started with this same club I was brought in as an outfielder having to prove myself. I was fine at making routine plays and routine throws but it did not do much to impress my own teammates or to prove anything. Becoming less and less enamored playing in the outfield I told myself to step it up to get on the ball from the jump giving myself enough time to extend myself if necessary to make a play. Get to anything in front of me quicker to allow for throwing out baserunners trying to advance. Low and behold I became a much-improved outfielder based on my attitude, approach and play. I made a couple of crazy plays in the same game back in Prescott AZ one night after I changed my ways. My teammates had to influence our leader to play me at 2nd Base. Those same guys are still here and I felt I needed to play much better especially If this team is going to call it quits after our next loss. I wanted to leave them and others a memory of what they all had seen before.Second inning with a runner on second base and two outs I charge a ball hit right at me one hop into and out of my glove quickly momentum forward as I throw a strike from medium depth. My team fires up, but not as much as I do within myself. At the plate moments later with bases empty I smack a hard line drive into left-center field, as normal on this weekend the ball slows after hitting the ground the outfielder relaxes and I don’t break stride lower my head and don’t look up until after I pop-up after sliding safely on the bag. Again my teammates get a big kick from it. As the “courtesy runner” leaves the dugout I wave him off and turn away. With a squirmish bunch of teammates on hand on the next pitch, the ball is sent to right-field as I round third there is dead silence from the dugout as I pick up our on-deck batter waving his arms emphatically for me to get down and slide towards my right. When I stop sliding I am at his feet and five feet beyond home plate. Half my team leaves the bench as if I just hit a dong 450′. I was back and just getting started. Next inning a ball is driven deep between me and our right-fielder, seeing the ball off of the bat I spin to my left as I was able to do before my surgery or in other words without hesitation. Concentrating on the ball I feel no dirt beneath my foot as I step on the warning track at a good pace. As I reach up extending my glove hand out I slam into the monster as we had been calling it. I get up quickly but drop just as fast to my knees realizing I have no air. I am stuck right there as the play becomes dead with the hitter on third base. The ball had bounced off the fence and with our right-fielder chasing the ball as well our second baseman has to run to the ball coming towards him and off the wooden fence. I am given enough time to catch my breath while I count the stars dipping in and out of my vision. We go off in that game and end it with a run-rule after five innings. With an early finish, it allows us to migrate over to an adjoining field that will be the site of the next game. We will play the winner of this game being played. I remember a beautiful sunny day as we take a break.A long break as the two teams go back and forth and then into extra innings. Tierra a team from the Los Angeles area and the best ballclub out of Canada do battle. Two of my teammates the two who had me sandwiched between them earlier that morning during the ride to work. These two have snuck off after lifting the white medical tape I carried in my ballbag. While another asks permission from the tournament officials if we could stretch and warm-up on Field No. 4 the diamond we played on prior. I catch wind of our request so I decide to get a head start if the answer is yes. Either way, I don’t want my ankle to become stiff with the delay. Going about my business I see the two fore-mentioned teammates walking up with an identical shit eatin’ grin on both of their faces. I ask them a rhetorical question, what are you guys up to? One said, “absolutely nothing.” while the other’s response is “we just went for a walk.” Those two answers backed by their “double grins” should have told me they were up to something. Figuring I would find out when they apply their humor by exposing their victim usually a teammate. I must have forgotten I was on the team as we are cleared to warm -up. Remember that head start I wanted, well It turned into the last one to walk over. Only because I could not find my white tape. I wanted to tape my wrist up that started bothering me after sliding at home plate in our earlier game. I follow the group who some have made the outfield while others said good-bye to their wives or girlfriends blocking my sight towards the entire field. Not that I was looking in that direction. I kinda had noticed that even the girls were acting a little giddy like my two buddies were, giggling and some flat out laughing until they noticed me behind them. They went silent like nobodies business. With their life-partners many paces ahead of me I hustle to catch up when a couple of them wait for me. I remember asking what’s the matter with the wives? As a matter of fact, what’s the matter with them as I point to right-center field where are mates are laughing with some rolling around on the ground. Asking another rhetorical question… what did I miss? A loud whistle is sent their way it served as a signal to move out of the way so I could get a glimpse as a continue to walk towards them. Still haven’t noticed anything as one tosses me my roll of tape. Begining to ask him why he took my tape I am grabbed at the top my shoulders spun in the direction of that big green monster. Those two after swiping my tape used it to “draw” a life-size “chalk outline” of me on the monster right where I had slammed into it earlier. Looking so life-like “Moose” would include a heavily taped ankle on their artist rendering display. I am so enamored with the project that also has my name and number on what is the back of the display model’s jersey. We did not even wear our names on the back of anything we wore ever. But I understood where they were coming from, didn’t mean I had to roll around on the ground and laugh at it though. But it was funny as all get out. “Moose” came through for the team and our support group at my expense. The few guys I had met just a couple weeks earlier during team workouts became if only short-lived, members of “The Moose Fan Club.”But one in all seriousness who would play next to me in right-field asked me “what happened?” I remember telling him new field, new surroundings, never felt the warning track, I should have caught it.“Moose” telling the story later, like 3 years later at a tourney in Tempe AZ to a group of ballplayers that were sinking some suds and done playing for the night, added this… “it sounded like a wild horse running into the side of a big wooden barn!” “Didn’t it “Eight” “Eight” is the name he used for me, telling us one time “I call him “Eight” thinking if I forget his name I could look at his shirt”Los Angeles beats the Canadiens and is granted a 10–15-minute break until first pitch. L.A. was a high strung team that fed off of their own play, borderline over the top at times. Going by the team name Tierra, in Spanish, it translates to the earth, the land. Their coach the most vocal and demonstrative of them all had a bad habit of dropping flat on the ground in front of their dugout performing some kind of reverse snow angel mixed with his version of break dancing on a sheet of cardboard. But with no cardboard, his antics would purposely raise dirt from the ground up in a cloud of dust. Thus the team name, Tierra. Doing this to fire his team-up was performed at least four times that we saw against the Canadiens. It seemed to work for them as they continued to extend the game vs Canada until finally winning in 11 innings. So as their coach is probably changing his clothes ours did something none of us expected and set the tone for the game. Before the start of every game, we would gather around in a small circle by third or first base depending on which dugout we were assigned. Last-minute instructions followed by the group chanting “Homes” our self given nickname as a team. “Homes” represented the last name of our three-year sponsor. Immediately after “Homes” our fearless leader flops to the ground and skirmishes about mimicking Tierra’s coach. Meant to fire up his own ballclub his unannounced demonstration set off Tierra. They came out loud like they were when they finally dispatched Canada about 15 minutes earlier.Their emotion resurfaced and failed to diminish much as we played catch up trying to overcome the lead until finally tying the game in the 6th inning. I would play my best game of the weekend as would “Moose” I was as pumped up as Tierra but I kept it inside, only uttering to “Moose” in a low voice I love this Bud I could do this all night. And only like “Moose” could, leaving me laughing every time and with an “I could care less” smirk on his face he comes back with… “Ditto Eight Ditto.”We would lose to a team that in hindsight was so much like we were when we stormed through A.S.A C Division back in Arizona. Tierra who played wild back to back extra-inning games were too tired to perform any antics or rituals upon the win. At home plate after the game when shaking hands what we got was their respect. They actually thanked us for the competition singling myself and “Moose” out to show their respect. This is why I will tell my players when facing adversity to let them (opposition) know you were there, give them something to remember if it is only just your effort. My Nike Keystyones came alive for me the last two days of the tourney but I sure was glad to take them and everything else on the ankle off. When I finally did I began to laugh out loud remembering the chalk outline of me on that monster. The one that depicts me with an overly animated taped ankle and “Eight” on my back.

According to Valerius Maximus, he was killed by a tortoise dropped by an eagle that had mistaken his bald head for a rock suitable for shattering the shell of the reptile. Pliny, in his Naturalis Historiæ, adds that Aeschylus had been staying outdoors to avert a prophecy that he would be killed by a falling object. To be honest, anything on WikipediaThe Wikipedia article on reading really threw me for a loop. He actually had quite a roller coaster of a life, approaching suicide in his lowest point in his early 20s, then overcoming his chronic abdominal pain, growing deafness, and alcoholism to write what we consider to be his greatest works long after his hearing was gone. The premier of his 9th symphony on May 7th, 1824 was his first public appearance in many years. It was met with numerous standing ovations even during the performance, and a lady in the orchestra had to turn Ludwig for him to realize the performance was over (by the end he was slightly behind while orchestrating) and realize the applause behind him. They threw their hats into the air so he could appreciate their enthusiasm as he could not hear the clapping.Other fun fact, moshpits were not invented recently, people have taken their music damn seriously for a long time. some classical works were met with actual riots upon their premiere, like Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring.https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adrian_Carton_de_WiartIn an attack upon an enemy fort at Shimber Berris, Carton de Wiart was shot twice in the face, losing his eye and also a portion of his ear. He was awarded the Distinguished Service Order (DSO) on 15 May 1915.[13]In February 1915, he embarked on a steamerfor France. Carton de Wiart took part in the fighting on the Western Front, commanding successively three infantry battalions and a brigade. He was wounded seven more times in the war, losing his left hand in 1915 and pulling off his fingers when a doctor declined to remove them.[14] He was shot through the skull and ankle at the Battle of the Somme, through the hip at the Battle of Passchendaele, through the leg at Cambrai, and through the ear at Arras. The emotions were locked at all angry all the time. They had a bug with the behavior of both arms working together, so they just removed the charactors left arm.Jumping attacks from dinosaurs were disabled because the advanced (again for the time) physics system had trouble with coliding objects getting stuck inside eachother. (Due to problems we still have today actually, the fast moving object passing through things.)Just the concept of 'workaround and ship it' instead of being able to fix the bugs..is crazy, and theres more in that article. It also had a physics engine before Half Life 2, and may have been the main inspiration of it.Serial killers are always a good read. They are tabbed on the left of the desktop version of an article. Politicians' ones can be quite interesting. Here is the Queensland Senator Pauline Hanson's. (I don't agree with her politics, I just find the Talk page amusing).
