What is your favorite cartoon?

mine? oh boy! prepare for nostalgia guys. mines are a bit different from most people here because i am choosing the ones who had the most effect on me emotionally and nostalgically. of course, i watched them in my native language which is arabic, and it was aired in a channel called spacetoon. here they are. there is no least or most favs in terms of numbers going up and down, i love them all equally:“Oniisama e”. in english, “Brother, dear brother”, in arabic “اخي العزيز” which means “Dear brother”this anime was something all right. The first time i saw it was in Arabic and i was in my early tweens. it’s about the daily life of a high school girl named nanako, in a prestigious all-girls school where she meets many characters with different stories and gets enrolled in a prestigious sorority club which invokes most of the problems she faces from jealous classmates. she writes about them in letters to her sweetheart, a college teacher who she calls him “dear brother”. i also remember watching a couple of episodes in arabic then never again. it’s only after i graduated high school that i felt nostalgic in rewatching the entire anime again this time in its original dub with subtitles and boy was i surprised. not only was it better, i understood it in a way i never before and i loved it even more from now on. the reason it discontinued in arabic was that it deals with mature subjects like drug addiction, suicides, and lesbianism. it automatically reminded me of my own high school which had very similar problems. looking back at the anime now, i realized i was like the protagonist in a way and every single character and events in this anime mirrored the ones i had in real life when i was in high school. still, this anime is like the romanticized more glamourous version of my high school (i still wish my life in high school was exactly like in the anime). i love both dubs, but i watch the japanese one. i really, really, really recommend watching it!“Pokemon”. in arabic “بوكيمون”this was the first cartoon for kids that got a big hit around the world of all times. i love it to no end. i remember it took the world by storm. everyone was buying pokemon merch and stationaries, boys and girls. i remember owning a Pokeball, a pokemon phone note, a pokemon drawing book, and a plushie of Pikachu. i love all of it’s episodes. i remember me and my sisters would wake up early every morning before going to school and watch it before we miss it (it was the only reason why we woke up early for school, lol). this cartoon is hella nostalgic for us. i remember me and my sisters and my dad were going to the mall one day after school and as we were using the electric stairs, my sisters poked me in my arm to look at a giant screen at the end of the stairs where it aired an episode of pokemon “The Screen Actor's Guilt”. and then we’d go in the arcade section to see all the pokemon games. gosh, what beautiful memories. i recommend watching it until season 13.“Digmon Digital Monsters” series from 1 to 4. in arabic, “ابطال الديجيتال” which means “Digital Heroes”i watched this cartoon when i was just starting 4th grade. and it came after pokemon which is another anime i love about kids and their monster pets. the 1st season is about school kids on a field trip camping, then they were transported into a world of digital monsters where they bond with pet monsters and fight evil and in the end, they return back to their own world. the 2nd season is the second generation to the first (younger brothers and sisters to the original heroes) but the stories are set more in the real world than it is in the digital world. the 3rd season deals with entirely new characters and more mature subjects and is where the real world tries to make contact with the digital world but it ends poorly where the digital world tries to merge itself with the real world causing problems and thus the heroes have to battle against that. i remember actually crying at the final episode of this season because they all had to bid farewell to their pet monsters, it was very emotional. the 4th and the last season for me dealt with also entirely new characters and new pet monsters. i don't remember much about it because i thought nothing could top the original 3 seasons. but i gave it a few watches and i liked it. i like the scores and the villains. it was very entertaining if not memorable to me. Digimon holds a very nostalgic effect on me because of how different and mature it was from cartoons and animes i have watched before it. besides having a fantastic story and plot, i remember this anime dealt with real-life issues and emotions i thought no cartoon dared to talk about. like losing a sibling, favoritism amongst parents and their kids, problems parents faced depending on their income. to me this is as good as pokemon. i recommend watching from seasons 1 to 4.“Case Closed”. in arabic “المحقق كونان” which means “Detective Conan”this cartoon is so popular in the middle east, among kids and adults. there’s literally no one who has never heard of this cartoon it’s that awesome. it’s about a high schooler named Shinichi, who is a genius in deduction and solving problems, a huge fan of sherlock holmes, and Arthur Conan Doyle who goes out on a date with his girlfriend Ran. he secretly stumbles upon 2 crooks from a secret organization dealing with illegal exchanges and gets ambushed. they get rid of him by giving him a drug which turns him into a 6-year-old with the same mentality. and ever since he tries to get those crooks so he can get back to his normal age. he currently lives with his girlfriend and her dad Togo Mori (that’s how he is called in arabic) without the two’s knowledge of who he is. Togo is an ex-cop who opened up a detective agency where shinichi/now conan, solves crime disguising as Togo who becomes a worldwide famous detective. he is aided by his scientist friend who is a wacky but genius who invents him cool gadgets to help him solve crimes like a Voice-Changing Bowtie which allows him to change his voice into any voice he wants. a Power enhancing kick shoes that allow him to amplify the power of his kicks to hit objects that are bigger and stronger than him. and a stun-gun-wristwatch where he shoots tiny tranquilizer darts at his targets to knock them out. as i aged, this cartoon becomes more and more favorite and loved. the things i didn’t understand when i was a kid i understood it more when i grew up. i love all the new characters they meet in every episode and their motives for committing those crimes. my favorite and most memorable episode of all will always be the 2 parters “The Wealthy Daughter Murder Case”. because it was the first 2 parter episodes which had me anticipating for the next episode and it was the most intense, gruesome and very well fabricated crime i have ever seen. i highly recommend watching case closed. its a smart and intelligent anime.Hunter X Hunter, in arabic “القناص” which means “The Hunter”i recommend watching the 1999 version. because it has better animation and musical scores and because i see no point for remakes that don’t add anything new. this anime, was the first of it’s kind. it was the first shonen anime, for me, in the sense that it is the original dragonball/naruto/one piece/bleach/ and many other popular shonen animes today. this anime inspired all its successors. i have never seen any anime like it. it was amazing, adventurous, engaging, tense, hella mature, and really really good stories and characters. almost all my classmaters are fans of hunter x hunter. it’s about a world where people participate in a competition where they hunt each other and the winners get to have a card like a certificate that makes them officially hunters and grants them access to everything like traveling around the world freely and obtain anything they want. the protagonist, Gon, (the boy on the bottom left) participates to find his estranged father. along the way, he meets colorful and very interesting and mysterious characters. like killua, (the boy on the bottom right) who comes from a long line of prestigious assassins and who becomes immediate friends with, the (blond boy on the top left) Kurapika, who is the only survivor of his clan who were assassinated by the villains of the series, and Liorio (the man on the right) who wants to become a hunter and obtain the certificate to become a doctor to help people after the loss of his friend. the emotions and events are very real and the characters are very real and believable. each levels becomes harder and harder as they progress with the competition and it ‘s very exciting to see them solve problems and succeed. and that’s why it’s my only favorite shonen anime of all time.Toally Spies! in arabic, “الجاسوسات” which means “Fem-Spies or The Spies-ette”.this cartoon is my no.1 favorite girl genre cartoon of all time. the west had their “Sailor moons”, here in the middle east we had “Totally Spies!”. my sisters and i used to pretend we were the 3 spies girls. me as clover, my twin sister as alex, and my younger sister as sam and fantasizing about going on secret missions around the world with the cutest most awesome spy gadgets for girls. my favorites were the Lazer-lipstick, the Computer-makeup powder, and the Jetpack Backpack. this cartoon is like James bond blended with Charlie’s angels. funny enough, my dad was a huge fan of charlie’s angel’s 1976 and was watching all their episodes. and he recognized totally spies’ theme immediately saying it was very inspired by the show. i google that recently and it turns out that he was absolutely right. the makers of totally spies show were heavily inspired by charlie’s angels and were big fans of the show that some of its episodes were a homage to the originals. this cartoon is very special to me because it came out in our mid-teens and all of my sisters and i love it so much. it will always be my no.1 favorite girl genre cartoon of all time.“Hakugei Densetsu: Legend of the Moby Dick”. in arabic it’s “الاشاوس” which means “The Braves”.i remember watching this cartoon in my late teens and it first aired in Ramadan. so i always connected it to watching it in Ramadan months. it’s the story of moby dick but set in futuristic sci-fi genre. i like watching it because it has a very medium pace plot and i like stories like that that have medium to slow pace plot as long as it has a strong story to tell. and it’s one of those stories that deal with the hardship of men and has little to no women. and i like stories like that to see how men deal with these problems without women pettiness. it’s just men doing what men do. give a man a weapon and he’d want to go pillage something. to me, it’s a very manly anime, and i like that. it’s one of the very underrated animes. i like this version of captain ahab. he is not cold or distant, he actually is very funny and treats his subordinates like a big brother sort of figure but serious when the situation demands it. and his crew members are hella fun to hang around. some of the characters are different than the novel like the narrator of the story who is a kid than an adult named ishmael. and the white whale is actually a terrorist spaceship that looks like a white whale terrorizing planets and annihilating civilizations where ever it goes and our heroes have to stop it. i love to watch it whenever i feel relaxed. i recommend watching it once just to know what it is.“Cyborg 009”, in arabic it’s “جنود السايبورغ”, which means “Cyborg Soldiers”this anime is a masterpiece ahead of its time. it’s much older than that. and i have severe respect for it. i remember watching this anime when we were teens and my friends also watch it and we’d talk about it all the time. the story begins about a guy waking up in a secret lab in a secret organization called “the black ghost” and realizes he has been physically changed into a cyborg weapon of mass destruction. he escapes with 8 other cyborgs (who were all people abducted just like him and turned into cyborgs against their will) with the help of a scientist who becomes sort of a father figure to them. and from here on out, each one of them is trying to return back to their normal previous lives with the changes that have happened to them. and each and every episode the evil black ghost organization would send assassin cyborgs to destroy them but they defeat them. some of those assassin cyborgs have very traumatic backstories. like 2 twins who were turned into negative and positive based electric cyborgs who can never hold each other because it would result in an explosion and it’s when they die that they finally held hands. another one really made me cry was assassin cyborg who was a father who got abducted and turned into this monstrous spaceship that has no form. he cries saying “i can’t hold my daughter in my arms anymore” this literally had me in tears. this anime is very, very real. and i love it to no end. the reason i like this anime is that it did something i have never seen any anime or western cartoon do before. and that is the protagonists are all people from all around the world from different time-lines who are in the same ordeal together, not just america or japan. it focuses and shows the lives of all those characters equally.cyborg 001 is a russian baby who was turned into a cyborg by his father who had gone mad with grief searching for a cure for him. he obtained telekinesis and telepathy.cyborg 002 is a guy from new york and used to be a trouble maker who got in trouble with gang members and was abducted by the black ghost organization and was turned into a cyborg who can fly with rockets for legs.cyborg 003 is from france. and as she was going with her brother to her ballet rehearsals. she was abducted from her brother and he never saw her again. when she became a cyborg, she obtained sonar and radar-like powers.cyborg 004 is from germany. he and his fiance were trying to escape the nazi germany then into neutral switzerland but failed because they were ambushed by the black ghost organization who caused his fiance’s death as she died between his arms. he is the most cybernetic one out of the 9 cyborgs as in 95% machine and 5% human. he has knee-rocket launchers, razor blade hands, and pistols for fingers and has an atom bomb planted inside his chest.cyborg 005 is a native american. he and his family were struggling in reservations. the organization offered to help (which of course was a big lie). they changed him and gave him superhuman strength. and because his cybernation was the most difficult out of the 9, his real heart gave out so they had to give him an artificial heart so it could withstand the operation.cyborg 006 is a chinese restaurant owner who lost his restaurant and because of that, his wife left him. he ended up in depression and was about to commit suicide until the black ghost came in and offered help (again, a lie). they changed him into a fire-breathing cyborg who can dig underground tunnels like moles.cyborg 007 is a british stage actor who lost his job due to his failed love life. was also contemplating suicide until the black ghost came in and offered “help”. his new cybernetic powers allow him to shape-shift into anything on a cellular level.cyborg 008 is from a war-ridden country in africa. he was a soldier until he got injured and was captured by the black ghost and was giving underwater powers like breathing underwater. later he receives a full-body made of scales because he was badly damaged. this enabled him to swim faster than any living torpedo.cyborg 009 from japan. the most recent and the most advanced out of the 9. he was accused of killing the pastor who was like a father figure to him in the orphanage he grew up. he then ran away and threw himself off a cliff into the waters of the ocean. he was found by the black ghost and was changed into the fastest being alive.each one of their lives is very diverse and very interesting and you have to watch this anime to know all of them. i highly recommend watching this anime. even thought it had a lot of versions in the past and the future, but this version of cyborg 009 has the best musical score, fleshed out characters and their backstories, plot, much better story telling and animation. it’s one of those anime that are rare masterpieces and are ahead of their time.Oban Star Racers. in arabic it’s the same “اوبان ستار ريسرز”this anime is criminally underrated. watching it was like watching a dream and ending it was like ending a dream as well. the anime takes place in a futuristic si-fi setting where there is a vehicle race competition called OBAN which happens every 1000 years or so. participants compete from all over the planets including earth. and the reward is to be granted one wish to make your dream come true. now i won’t spoil the plot twist cause there is one and by god it was the biggest most gut-punched plot twist i have ever seen so you have to watch it to know how it ends. i remember it aired when we were in 8th grade and we would come home after school exactly at 4:30 and turn on the tv as quickly as possible before we even changed our clothes or washed our hands just to see if it was on or did we miss some at the beginning. to sum this anime up, i would say i have never seen anything like it, before or after. it was really unique. it was unique in how the anime looked visually, the designs of the worlds was something out of a dream and it looked very alien. the characters too had a very unique design like every single alien looked vastly different from each race, (the humans had no noses but i guess it was just the style), it had one of the most memorable and amazing music scores of all time (my dad even said that the opening song is very good considering my dad doesn’t like cartoons or animes, and i listen to them in my ipod all the time). i googled later on who created it and what country did the animation. turns out that it was created by a french man named Savin Yeatman-Eiffel and the animation was done in collaboration with both france and japan. everything right then made sense to me as why it looked so unique and beautiful. if there is one good trait i admire about the french, and that is that they always have style. whether in clothes, perfumes, marketing, buildings, roads, designs, way of life. they know what makes an impact so effectively creating always unique styles and forms. and japan’s dedication and always loyal to the source material. which is why i was glad it wasn’t made in america otherwise it would’ve changed alot to cater to it’s agendas. i highly recommend that france will always collaborate with the japanese animation industry if it wants to be unique from holllywood. i also highly recommend watching it only one time to know what i am talking about and to see what reaction and feeling you will get from it.Martin Mystery. in arabic by the same name “مارتن مستري”the same people who did totally spies! did martin mystery. it’s like if you took x-files and supernatural but with teenagers. its got everything that i like, like teens following mysteries and supernatural elements without mature and gory things. where case closed perfected the detecting-mystery-crime genre, martin mystery perfected the action-mystery-supernatural genre for me. and this anime to me came at a good time when cartoons like ren and stempy and sponge bob was the style and the art that made thousands of other cartoons emulate. martin mystery not only had decent style and animation, but also great story, mystery and comedy too. france and japan should collaborate more they make actual good material when they do like totally spies and oban star racers. i highly recommend watching it.
